Kekkai Genkai Name: Akumugan (Nightmare Eye)
Physiological Attributes: Upon acquiring this Doujutsu, the user’s eyes turn red in color, and will never revert back to their natural color again. When the doujutsu is activated, their eyes will glow an even brighter red that can be seen even in the darkest areas.
Special Abilities: The Akumugan is a Genjutsu typed doujutsu that specializes in fear. Those with the Akumugan are able to create horrifying illusions that even the best shinobi can’t dispel. The Akumugan is the nightmare eye, and allows the user to peer into their victim’s head, finding their darkest fears and terrors. This is generally done by making eye contact, but an experienced user can do this without making eye contact. They then create an illusion where the victim is enveloped in complete darkness. The last thing they see before their nightmare begins is the user’s glowing red eyes, staring at them wherever they look within the darkness. As most people have more than one fear, the genjutsu will have varying degrees that are further described in the stages of the Akumugan. The time spent under the affects of the illusion feels like hours, but in reality, only seconds pass before the illusion is finished.
Stages:
Eien no Yami (Eternal Darkness): This is the first stage of the Akumugan, and the activation of the doujutsu causes the user’s eyes to glow a bright red. By making eye contact (though again, more experienced users don’t always have to) with their victim, they pull them into an illusion. This illusion, if not dispelled before it starts, causes the target to fall into a dazed state. Their eyes go gray in color, and they appear lifeless as they stand there, staring back at the user. Within the illusion they are enveloped within complete darkness. Tormented by the red glowing eyes that follow them everywhere they turn. The victim will often begin to go hysterical, and the time spent in this prison allows the user of the Akumugan to prey on their worst fears. Allowing the user to use these fears against them in following stages. When the user of the Akumugan releases the victim from the illusion, the time it takes the victim to shake off their dazed state varies from person to person. But they will wake up feeling mentally and emotionally exhausted, as well as extremely dizzy. This technique must be used on the victim at least one time before following stages can be used. For example, if the user used the first stage on someone in one fight, and fought them again later, they could skip this first stage and go straight to using a following stage. However, if the first stage has never been used on the victim, the user is unable to use the following stages, because they would be unaware of their victim’s fears. The range on this stage is two miles.
2. Eien no Akumu (Eternal Nightmare): Though considered the signature technique of the Akumugan, it is only the second stage, and is used far more than the third stage. Once the first stage, Eien no Yami has been used on the victim and the user has collected sufficient information, they can activate the Eien no Akumu. Much like the first stage, the victim is enveloped in complete darkness and terrorized by glowing red eyes. These eyes are the last thing they see before the nightmare begins. The user picks one of the target’s fears, forcing them to live through it, and in some cases, even relive their worst nightmares. During this illusion, the victim will remain in a dazed state. When released from the nightmare, they generally pass out, some staying unconscious for a time period of a day to a week. This varies from person to person, and the nightmare chosen. As the average person has more than one fear. When they do wake up, the victim may feel fatigued and dizzy for a period of a few days to a week. But the nightmare never quite ends there, and many victims report sleepless nights after facing the Eien no Akumu. The range on this stage is one mile.
3. Eien no Tero (Eternal Terror): This is the third and final stage of the Akumugan. It is incredibly taxing on the user, and the number of victim’s who have survived this stage in the history of the Akumugan can be counted on one hand. Even then, these survivors are hospital bound. Plagued by mental disorders such as schizophrenia and night terrors. The Eien no Tero starts out the same as the previous two stages, and the victim remains in their dazed state. However, rather than remaining quiet, they let out blood curdling screams. Within the darkness of the Eien no Tero, the victim is shown their absolute worst nightmare. The thing they fear the most. The mental and emotional damage is generally enough to leave the victim in a vegetative state. Though they are physically unharmed, the mental and emotional trauma is near impossible to recover from. And the user can easily kill the victim after using the Eien no Tero. The range on this stage is half a mile.
* Each stage is unlocked through practice, which is why this doujutsu is considered an awful curse. As practice means terrorizing someone.
Method of Obtainment: The Akumugan can only be obtained by those who have faced their greatest fears. Lived through their worst nightmare and lived to tell the tale. However, this only occurs in scenarios where the user of the doujutsu murdered someone. Legends say that the blood of those who die in this nightmare poison the eyes of the one cursed with the Akumugan, and that is why they have red eyes. This is an incredibly rare doujutsu that is seen in only three people every decade.
Limitations/Drawbacks: All stages must be used within the specified range. Eien no Akumu (Stage 2) and Eien no Tero (Stage 3) can’t be used on a victim that hasn’t endured the first stage, Eien no Yami, at least once. The second and third stages are incredibly taxing on the user’s eyes. Depending on length of usage, and how frequently they’ve used the Akumugan, symptoms can range from simple fatigue and headaches, to temporary blindness, debilitating dizziness, and in the worst cases, permanent loss of sight. At which point the Akumugan would be rendered useless, unless the user has figured out how to use it without making direct eye contact.
Additional Information: Current users are @kazama, who is capable of using all three stages.
