Part 1: Meet the Trickster This is a past thread in Gensō no Niwa (Garden of Illusions), the home of the foxes. During this thread, Hara will be learning how to utilize Senjutsu and enter the Sage Mode. I'm splitting it in parts to make things easier to follow. (Mostly for myself >_>) If anyone else is reading this... Enjoy!
In a lush forest far beyond Konoha, a certain trickster was skipping along between the tall trees. The trail had ended a while ago, but Hara kept moving forward out of simple curiosity. It was her day off and she had decided to spend it on a little personal mission. Few weeks back, she had come through here in a hurry while trying to find a shortcut to Konoha. Well, the route had turned out to be far longer, but she had found something else. There was an odd, glimmering crack on the mountainside, just big enough for a human to squeeze through. Just what could be on the other side?
Back then, Hara had been too busy to check it out, but today she had all the time in the world. Ah, there it was, right where the bushes seemed to be the thickest. The crack seemed to glimmer a little brighter as she got closer and she could’ve sworn she saw something colorful on the other side. It was a little odd how she hadn’t noticed it before. She had come through here countless times when she had been younger. Another odd thing was how the glimmering felt. It was familiar somehow, reminding her of the days when she first discovered her Kekkei Genkai...
Carefully, the trickster squeezed into the crack, but as soon as she took another step, she fell through as if had been just a thin doorway. On the other side, the sight left her speechless. It was a beautiful forest that had come to life with brilliant colors from countless exotic flowers and mysterious plants. With every blink, the landscape seemed to change just a little, like an optical illusion. She had never seen anything like it. The Kitsune was snapped out of her thoughts when suddenly her Kekkei Genkai went off. Ultramarine sparks of chakra crackled around her body. Someone had tried to target her with a genjutsu.
And it didn’t take long for the culprits to appear...
Two foxes walked out from bushes and the kunoichi could only tilt her head curiously. One of them seemed like an ordinary fox, except that it was wearing dark red kimono and a dark hat, along with twin katana on his back. She was pretty she had seen the exact same getup on some samurai during her visit in Tetsu. The other fox was even more unusual. She -well, Hara assumed it was a she based on how it wore a white and exaggeratedly long women’s kimono- was an albino fox with two wispy tails instead of one. Oh, and it just happened to be the size of a horse. Definitely not something one would see every day...
With what she had seen so far, Hara wasn’t even surprised when the red one spoke. It glanced at the bigger one and shook his head. "Nyeh, see? I told you, she has to be immune." The white one didn’t say a word and simply nodded. She approached the kunoichi with soundless steps, circling around her with curiosity glimmering in her eyes. It was like she was trying to check something, to look beneath the surface, to understand...
Then the smaller, hm, regular sized fox approached Hara with a confident stride, like he had owned the whole forest. "Alright, sweet cheeks, is this some sort of trick?" He gestured at the fading chakra bolts. Hara smirked. "Of course it is. What else could it be?" It didn’t take a genius to notice the mocking tone in her answer and the fox wasn’t amused one bit. "Oi, drop the attitude, missy. Whadda ya doing in here?" And of course, the trickster just had to mock furry fellow some more. "Walking. What did it look like then?" She had barely finished the smartass answer when the fox drew his katana and brought them up to her throat. "Nyeeeh, don’t get smart with me, see?"
Luckily, the situation was defused by the larger fox. She stepped between the hothead and the trickster, much like a gentle mother would interrupt arguing children. Holding up a paw, it wiggled two toes. The smaller fox sighed as if he knew what was coming. "Right, two words, see?" Resembling a dancer, she started moving around, making the strangest gestures. Hara didn’t have a clue what was going on, but the other fox seemed to understand. Kind of. After watching what was at least ten minutes of dizzying display, he finally tried to guess. "Meat... Booze? Ey, mom, if you’re that hungry, we can grab something after we off the smartass here." Finally, she just threw her palms in the air and gave up. Despite the clear frustration, her voice was calm and dreamy, like a bell chiming far, far away.
"Oh for the love of... It was 'Meet Bosu'. He will know what to do."
The red fox thoughtfully stroked the fur on his chin. "Nyeah, not a bad idea..." He turned to Hara with a haughty smile. Whoever this Bosu was, he seemed to have utmost faith in him. "Bosu will crack you wide open, see? How about it? Will you come with us to meet Bosu, stranger?" The Kitsune didn’t really even stop to think about it. She had already come this far, might as well see how far the mystery really led. "Sounds fun~ Sure, I’ll come along." Nodding, the two foxes motioned the trickster to follow along deeper into the forest. This could’ve been either the best or the worst decision she had ever made.
Only time would tell which...

Part 2: An Offer You Can’t Refuse
Hara followed the two strange foxes through the even stranger forest. It looked like her surroundings were alive, shifting and morphing with every step. New plants appeared and vanished, the flowers changed colors and the trees grew into the strangest shapes. It only stopped once they entered a massive clearing. The Kitsune could only stare in awe at the lush, green meadow covered in flowers, with a river running across it. In the center, the biggest oak she had ever seen reached towards the heavens. The trunk was easily thicker than the Hokage’s building.
Dozens of foxes of all colors and sizes were scattered around the meadow, some working, others having fun. For whatever the reason, every single one was wearing some sort of kimono. All action seemed to pause briefly as the trickster and her escorts passed. Hara could feel the curious looks focusing on her. Surprisingly there was no hostility towards the outsider. While walking closer, she took note that the massive oak had been carved hollow like an unusual building. Even more foxes were moving around the walkways suspended among the branches. While not exactly a tree expert, she was pretty sure most trees should’ve died from that. Yet this one seemed to be thriving... How fascinating.
In the shade of the massive oak, a gigantic, brown fox was lying down and napping peacefully. It too donned a kimono, a brilliantly red one that just screamed for attention. The regular-sized fox jumped up to yank the big ear while yelling. "Oi! Bosu! Wake up!" The snoring stopped and the huge eyes opened partially. "Zzwhuzzit?" Hara felt the ground shaking beneath her feet as the giant fox leaned closer. "Oho? Aniki, Usobi, you two brought a guest? Wonderful!" The hotheaded fox, Aniki supposedly, shook his head and spat out a somewhat accusing answer. "Nah, Bosu, we didn’t bring her. She was wandering around on her own. Nyeeh, an intruder in our forest, see?"
With a pondering harrumph, the fox named Bosu crossed his paws. "Hrmmm, how unusual..." He shifted his gaze into the horizon, towards the odd forest spreading in the distance. "The surrounding woods are special. Using the energy of the nature itself, they create an incredibly powerful genjutsu barrier that stops humans from entering our paradise. Only foxes like us are crafty enough to resist the illusion." The gaze returned to the smiling kunoichi, trying to read her intentions. "Which begs the question... How were you able to even get here? The illusion should’ve pushed you away the moment you tried." Before the trickster could think of a witty answer, a small voice interjected sternly.
"It’s in her blood."
The Kitsune glanced around confused before realizing the sound had come from down low. A tiny, pipe-smoking fox, no taller than three feet, was standing right in front of her. He looked much like an old geezer with a silver fur and a kimono that must’ve gone out of style decades ago. "Hara Kin, the Kitsune of Konoha, a Jounin with the rare Kitsune no Tamashi Kekkei Genkai that shields the person from illusions." The trickster was left speechless and she even took a step back. How... How did this creature know so much about her? Seeing her reaction, the elderly fox tried to ease the tension with a friendly smile. "It’s a pleasure to meet you at last, child."
After the most awkward pause, Hara only managed to stammer. "Likewise, ehm... you..." The old fox lost his smile and lifted a brow, sounding just the tiniest bit... insulted. "...Do you not know who I am?" Hara just snickered. She honestly had no idea. "Should I?" Wrong answer. Immediately the tiny geezer bounced up and smacked the trickster on the head before she could even react. "Insolent brat! I am the great and mighty Don-sama, the last true Fox Sage! Don’t you ever forget it!" She just rubbed her head and nodded. Sheesh, for a dried up geezer, he sure moved fast and hit hard.
Sighing, Don turned away to observe the foxes playing on the fields. "Sadly, this confirms my suspicions... People have forgotten about us. Our beautiful forest is both a blessing and a curse. With no humans to visit us, I can’t pass on my teachings." He glanced at the other three foxes. "And none of my would-be successors have what it takes to learn the ancient wisdom..." Immediately Aniki and Bosu opened their mouths to protest, but one sour glare was enough to stop them.
Suddenly, however, Don’s tone and expression brightened as he faced the Kitsune. "But you, Hara Kin... you have the potential I haven’t seen in hundreds of years. If you vow to honor our ways, I will teach you secrets beyond your imagination. Under my guidance, you cannot fail. What say you, child? Will you join the clan of foxes and become a Sage?" With a hopeful smile, he extended a paw for a shake. He wasn’t getting any younger and had to grasp every opportunity with an iron grip. This trickster would become the next Sage, whether she wanted it or not.
Hara considered for a long moment, far longer than she usually had to spend in anything. She had a gut feeling this would be far from simple, but at the same time the idea intrigued her greatly. Just imagining herself as a great Sage was incredibly amusing. "You had my curiosity... But now you have my attention. Okay, I’m in." Another wrong answer, another lightning-fast smack. "Vow properly!" The trickster rubbed her poor head and knelt down. "Fine, fine... I, Hara Kin, the Kitsune of Konoha, vow to honor the ways of the fox clan." When she lifted her gaze, she realized all the foxes on the fields had stopped to watch and were now cheering.
Don was the most pleased of them all. Bosu handed over a massive scroll with more text than Hara cared to read while the geezer continued. "Then it is settled. Hara Kin, from now on until the day I die, I will be your sensei. While you learn the ways of the Sage, our gang will assist you in anything you need. Oh, and sign here, with blood naturally." The trickster bit her thumb and scribbled a fancy little signature on the summoning contract. Smirking, she voiced an idle question to keep the talk going. "So, when do we start?" However, her new sensei had a different idea.
"Immediately."

Part 3: Quick Isn’t Easy
As soon as Hara had agreed to the conditions, Don had dragged her off into the depths of the massive tree. It was like an actual building complex with hallways and rooms. Lanterns lit the way. Foxes were scurrying everywhere. Along the way, the sensei explained the details of the upcoming training. "Listen well, my student. What I am about to teach you is called Senjutsu. It is the ability to gather the energy of nature and use it in combat to unleash incredible power. People who can do that are called Sages." The Kitsune had no choice but to listen carefully. Luckily, it was interesting enough so far.
Before the savvy trickster could even ask about the catch, the wise fox continued with a dark tone. "However, natural energy is very fickle. In order to even access it, you need to be absolutely still and become one with the nature. Then, you have to balance it perfectly with your personal energies or things get messy." Something told Hara the geezer didn’t mean the laundry increasing kind of messy. That would’ve been far too convenient. "Usually, this training would take months, years even. As they say, patience is the key to success unless the lock gets worn out by the rust of time and you end up needing a locksmith." She slowly tilted her head, but in the end didn’t even bother to ask. It was confusing enough already.
After an awkward silence, Don cleared his throat and got back on track. "But I know your reputation, Kitsune. You don’t have that kind of patience and to be perfectly honest, I don’t either. So, instead of following the traditional route... We are going to cheat." Hara’s smirk widened. Already she liked the idea of skipping the boring parts. "You will learn the basics of Senjutsu in only one day..." Pause for dramatic effect and... "Or die trying." The trickster chuckled at the obvious joke. She had heard that one before. The old fox just glanced at her and muttered under his breath. "Hm, yes, laugh while you can, child." ...Well that certainly wasn’t in any way ominous.
Upon reaching what must’ve been the center of the tree, the teacher and the student stopped before the strangest room she had ever seen. It was like a miniature garden full of tiny flowers. There were no lanterns here, but the plants glowed softly in the dark. For some reason, the garden was lined with countless fox statues of different sizes. They were all carved in the same position, sitting down and looking very focused. All in all, it resembled a scene from a dream.
The second Hara stepped into the room, violent shivers passed through her body. It felt like a sudden breeze, both hot and cold at the same time, was trying to force its way into her. Don smirked deviously. "I believe you can already sense it, hm? The flowers in here are unique. Their hypnotic scent and chakra glow push your senses into a supernatural overdrive. In here, even a mere novice can clearly grasp the flow the natural energy. Thus, your body will naturally try to absorb it." Though the student tried to pay attention, she was kind of distracted by orange fur suddenly growing on her hands.
Wait what?!
While the fox proceeded to explain what was going on, Hara was now trying her hardest not to panic. "However... There is a downside... If you can’t control that energy, you’ll start transforming into a fox. And once the transformation goes too far... The energy will turn you into stone. All these statues... are the remains of the impatient students who failed this training." Okay, now she was panicking. Don, however, seemed to savor the moment, staring coldly into the pleading eyes of his slowly morphing student. "And you thought I was joking about the whole die trying part." Of course she had! Though she didn’t exactly fear dying, she would still much rather stay alive!
Suddenly, Don slapped his paws together and a black staff appeared in a puff of smoke. "Luckily, there is a way to reset the transformation. One good whack" And Hara got a free demonstration on the spot, slammed painfully into her back. The fur vanished in an instant. "-gets the energy right out of you." He finished with a smug smile. The trickster, however, was still less thrilled. She sat down and rubbed her back with a childish whine. "Ow! Ow ow ow... What is that thing made of?" The sensei shook his head. "None of your concern. Now focus." For a good measure, he smacked her again. Just because.
With a defeated sigh, Hara closed her eyes and attempted to focus, only to yelp as the sensei hit her yet again. She wasn’t even sure if she had been transforming yet... However, Don offered some words of encouragement. "Once you can stop and control the forced absorption completely, adjusting the energy levels should be a breeze. You were somewhat of a prodigy in the Academy after all. In the meantime, I will stay by your side and beat the energy out of you as many times as it takes." Upon seeing his student’s flat stare, he smirked and tapped the staff against his paw. "Hm, fine then. How about this? The faster you learn to at least slow down the process, the less I will have to hit you."
Hara stifled the smartass answer she had been dying to give and closed her eyes again. She gathered all her chakra control to a single task, stopping the torrent of energy trying to ravage her. With each bruise she suffered, she pushed herself harder. Every mind trick in the book, every mental method in the arsenal, she used it all one by one. Seconds had blurred into minutes and minutes into hours. Time lost meaning.
Outside the tree, a brilliant full moon was lighting the forest below. And inside, the silence was absolute. Hara was sitting perfectly still, had been for a long while now, lost deep in meditation. Invisible to naked eye, immense power swirled around her. Like paint from an imaginary brush, colored marks spread on her face. Wispy, violet patterns framed her eyes, while three thick lines were drawn on each cheek and the tip of her nose turned black. She opened her eyes and they lit up with a ghastly glow. The balance of energies was perfect.
Snickering, Hara stood up and slowly stretched, enjoying the sensation. "Heh heh heh... How’s that, geezer? I finally did it!" Don twitched at the choice word and responded with a swift smack on her head, without the staff this time. "Don’t get cocky, brat! That was only the first step in your endless training! Besides, your Sage Mode is laughably weak!" After the outburst, the old teacher took a deep breath and muttered thoughtfully. "But... That is most definitely a working Sage Mode." At long last, the proud teacher could reveal his relieved smile. "Well done, Hara Kin. You may now call yourself..." She had truly done it. Hara Kin, the Kitsune of Konoha, had become...
"The Fox Sage."
