WORD COUNT 3222TAGGED @noneNOTES Work in progress mission. | "What?" the Kazekage asked, clearly caught off guard by her head jounin's words. Demiyah slowly set the brush down next to the ink well, her gaze stern as she stared him. "Say that again, please," she said calmly as she could, ensuring that her voice remained steady and unwavering, composing herself after only a split second of panic. The jounin repeated his words, holding out the message of distress from one of the village's elders, "Lady Amaya and a group of Sunagakure's jounin are trapped in the desert, directly to the east, without food or water and they are being held captive by a band of enemy shinobi, my lady!" the man said nervously, clearly scared of the action that the Kazekage would take. She was terrifying when she was this silent about something. And silent Demiyah was, leaning back in her chair, her fingers entwined with one another, the side of her hands rested against her lips, her gaze settled on the jounin who'd been so unfortunate to give her this news. For a moment she contemplated throwing everyone out of her office, but the eyes of three other village elders were on her, clearly waiting for her plan to rescue Amaya. All Demiyah did was stare at them, her gaze narrowed with frustration. What, in all of her 'infinite wisdom', as Amaya called it, prompted her to leave the village without telling the Kazekage first? And why did the other village elders not alert Demiyah to Amaya's trip, either? A few more long moment of silent prompted one of the other village elders, Akio Fuji, to speak up against the Kazekage, "Well, Lady Kazekage? What are you going to do about this? You can't just leave Amaya in the desert to die!" At the mention that she couldn't do something that she very well could, she sat up slowly, placing her elbows against her desk, staring directly at the elder with her one good eye. "And tell me, again, why I cannot? I don't think I should be wasting Sunagakure's resources on a woman who left the village without telling me, only to get herself into trouble in the process. I understand that you don't need to tell me what you guys do on a daily basis, and that you think all's right with the world if you bypass my opinions and put yourself into dangerous situations. However, just because Amaya told me nothing of her departure, that doesn't leave you Elders in the clear either. So, oh wise Elders, how about you go and save her. You obviously knew that she was gone and you told me nothing. You are at fault here," Demiyah noted dangerously, staring directly at Akio. "I don't see how I'm involved in any of this seeing as you all seem to be so insistent on doing things by yourself," she continued to give the tough love act, if only to shame the Elders. The world was a dangerous place, and for Amaya to not take a proper guard and the Elders to remain tight lipped about the situation until she was in danger of the worst kind, that wasn't something that Demiyah would put on her own shoulders and blame herself for. The Elder who'd spoken up seemed to be struck by her words, starting to look rather angry with her, "So you're going to let her die, Lady Kazekage? I must say that that's much unlike you." He was taunting her, but Demiyah wasn't biting, simply staring at him with a lifted eyebrow. She wouldn't let him spark her anger with useless words, especially since she already knew what her course of action would be. "No. I won't let her die. But the next time any of you think it's a good idea to leave the village without so much as a warning and taking hardy a guard, remember this conversation," she said calmly, pushing herself from her seat. "I'll even go myself, would that make you all a little happier with me?" she noted, now trying to settle the Elders' clear frustration with her previous words, though Demiyah was all too serious about them. She glanced back toward her assistant now, "I'm heading for the ANBU Headquarters. Continue on with your work, I'll be back tomorrow at the latest. The rest of you, get out of my office," she noted, heading straight for the door, her hands slipping off her Kage robes as she went, hanging the long pieces of fabric on a hook next to the door of her office. She then started quickly down the hallway from her office. The Elders attempted to followed her, but a quick burst of speed, and Demiyah was completely removed from their sight. She could almost hear the cries of irritation, knowing how worked up they got over her actions. She acquired two of her best ANBU members from the Headquarters, her two most trusted men in the village. Hayate Ito and Yuina Kurosaki. Next to her own team, of course, but this wasn't a mission that she could take them on. Adjusting her bow and quiver on her back, she took a few moments to check her weapon supplies while the two ANBU members gathered enough food and water for both themselves and Amaya and her guards. The two ANBU split the supplies between them, carrying the packs on their back without much issue. In a short span of time, they were running from the tunnel of Sunagakure, focusing on the world in front of them. The heat of the daytime desert was stifling, but it wasn't so bad when you were born into it. Any other village's ninja would have issues breathing or staring through the harsh sunlight. It was one thing that made the Land of Wind both a strategic and deadly location for a battle, and these shinobi wouldn't know what hit them. It was for too late for them to keep their lives. They forfeit that right when they'd decided to attempt to kill one of Sunagakure's Elders. The small group head in the eastern direction, starting at a quick run. "Time is of the escence in this mission, you two," Demiyah noted over her shoulder, smiling at the man and woman who followed behind her obediently. Hayate was the first of the two to speak, "What prompted Lady Amaya to leave the village without a proper guard, anyway, Lady Kazekage?" he asked, always one to wonder out loud. He was certainly one of the more talkative ANBU members that Demiyah favored, and he was brilliant with his blades. Demiyah sighed, hopping over a raised bank of sand, landing easily on her feet before taking off in a run once more, "If I knew, I think I would have sent more of a guard with her. Amaya's old enough that she can't exactly hold her own in a battle anymore. Even I don't know what she was thinking." "It must have been important if those ninja were willing to attempt to kill her for the information she was carrying," Yuina observed, running at the same pace as Demiyah, keeping up next to her. Yuina specialized in genjutsu and medical ninjutsu. She was most skilled in using senbon laced with potent poisons that she'd created herself. Soon enough, in the distance was a large bank of sand. Demiyah motioned for the ANBU to stay put, scaling the large bank and peeking over the top of it. 'Found you, Amaya,' she noted silently to herself, her gaze drifting around the area below. They were surrounded by a few different tents, and it appeared that both of Amaya's guards had been tied, though these ninja seemed to have been nice enough not to tie Amaya up like them. Demiyah frowned, noting four enemy shinobi huddled together around a map that they'd laid out on the sand, most likely discussing their route back to Kawa no Kuni. 'Not going to happen,' she mused to herself. Ducking back behind the safety of the the sand bank, she motioned for her ANBU to run forward and remove their packs to settle against the sand bank, before making hand seals, closing her eyes and letting out a very slow breath of air, 'Fuuton: Soyokaze.' The air moved out in all directions, hugging the hand and drifting toward the group of four shinobi over the crest of the sand bank, swirling around their feet before suddenly pulling back in toward Demiyah. She straightened up, glancing over the bank once more before looking to her ANBU, "There's three shinobi with large chakra pools, and a fourth with an even larger one. Leave that one to me. I want you two to focus on the other three. I'll make the first move and catch them off guard," she noted in a soft voice so that they wouldn't be detected. Hayate nodded, pulling one of his blades from it's sheathes. Yuina simply made a few hand signs, preparing herself for battle. Demiyah, of course, made the first move against the shinobi. She formed her hands into a few different seals, focusing on the men below them, still focused on the map that they had settled on the ground. After the seals were formed, she reached back, pulling a chakra reactive arrow from her quiver and her bow off her back. Drawing the arrow back on the bow string, she steadied herself, breathing out a rush of wind onto the arrow, able to see the wind spinning around its length. "Fuuton: Jisō Torunēdo," she murmured, releasing it right into the middle of the formation of rogue ninja. As the arrow flew through the air, the wind around the arrow became even stronger, forming a large tornado behind it. By the time it reached its target, it was the size of a small cyclone, pulling all four ninja into the center of it. It spun them quickly before the cyclone suddenly dissipated, throwing all four enemies each in a different direction. Of course, Demiyah made sure they flew nowhere near the direction of Amaya and her two shinobi guards. All four men rolled across the hot desert sand, their map lost to the cyclone and shredded into pieces. The first one to respond was the strongest of the four, pushing himself up off the desert floor and pulling a collapsable bow staff from his back, extending it. "Who the hell did that?!" the man yelled into the still desert air, looking enraged as his fellow rogues pushed themselves to their feet, looking disoriented. Demiyah glanced to Hayate and Yuina, nodding slowly, giving them the go ahead to attack. Hayate went to the left and Yuina to the right. Hayate's blade found flesh pretty quickly, slicing against the chest of one of the shinobi. Yuina stuck her target with poison senbon, observing him as he slowly started to grow dizzy, falling sideways into the sand.Yuina then went to work on the third one, Hayate having been distracted by his battle with his own target. The strongest shinobi of the rogue group looked on with rage, starting after Yuina who'd already killed one of his comrades. Thankfully, Demiyah stopped him from getting any closer to her ANBU member. Sand shot out in all directions as Demiyah appeared right in front of her target, an arrow drawn into her bow, an intense expression on her features. "You aren't getting any closer," she noted calmly, remaining focused on him and only him. When the shinobi struck forward with his bow staff, Demiyah jumped back, landing on two feet, steadying herself once more. Observing his movements, she predicted he would come forward once more and threw her leg out, "Fuuton: Kaze Kikku." The shinobi was launched back into a small sand bank, letting out a cough as sand filled his lungs. Demiyah only steadied herself once again, pulling the arrow back quickly, "Shotto Bakuhatsu." Releasing the second arrow, it landed directly next to the enemy shinobi, suddenly exploding with raiton chakra, effectively stunning him into place. Demiyah clicked her tongue slowly, stepping closer to him. "I don't like it when people try to kill my friends," she said darkly, slowly loading another arrow into her bow as she stepped right up in front of him. "Tell me. What's your name?" she asked lightly, her expression completely cold and distant. The man looked up at her with absolute shock, starting to stutter through his words, starting to plead for her to let him go. "Tell me your name," Demiyah repeated as calmly as possible, pulling her arrow back further, ready to release it. "Ren Misaki!" the man suddenly yelped, holding his hands up, Demiyah's stunning justu having worn off. Upon this realization, he formed quick hand signs before he dropped his hands into the sand, a smirk on his features. "Doton: Gōremu no Jutsu!" Ren said with a joyful laugh as a golem of earth formed next to him from the sand. Gritting her teeth, Demiyah jumped back, letting the third arrow from her quiver release from her bow, simply bouncing off the rock hard surface of the golem. "Shit..." she cursed to herself, sliding back on the sand, crouched down slightly, preparing herself for an attack. This wasn't going to go over well. She remained in place, staring hard at the golem and it's master that was now standing upright. 'Looks like I'm going to have to waste another arrow on it...' she thought to herself, slowly pulling another chakra reactive arrow from her quiver. She just barely loaded the arrow against the bow when the golem lurched forward, starting after her. A quick shift of her body, and she disappeared from view, standing on the bank of sand above Ren and his golem. Letting out a slow breath of wind around the arrow, "Fuuton: Jisō Torunēdo." She sighed, aiming it right at the golem. Like before, the arrow tore through the air, pulling both the golem and Ren into the center, tearing the earthen golem apart in the process. When the tornado dispersed, earth was thrown in every direction and Ren Misaki was thrown to Demiyah's feet. She had a normal arrow in her bow before he could even look up at her. Growling lightly, she kicked him in the chest, rolling him onto his back and pinning him into the sand. "Who are you?" Ren choked out, gritting his teeth while he watched his captor. Demiyah only grimaced at him. "Shotto o Osoreru..." Demiyah said lightly, aiming the arrow toward the mans heart, sliding her foot back. The look of terror and surprise that formed on Ren's face was enough to make Demiyah's heart twinge with agony. She hated this. She hated having to take lives, but if she didn't, he might try and capture another one of her elders. She couldn't have that. They were too important to her for her to lose. As angry as she had been about the Elders keeping Amaya's trip from her, Demiyah loved each and every one of them dearly. "Lady Kaze-" Ren started to say, falling silent the moment that Demiyah's arrow lodged itself in his chest. Sighing heavily, Demiyah turned away, looking to her two ANBU team mates. They'd both finished off the last shinobi while Demiyah had been fighting. "Burn their bodies. I'm going to free Amaya and the others," she said calmly, stepping past them. First she returned to the sand bank they'd first come over, grabbing the packs filled with food and water before she jumped down into the basin once more. She dropped the packs next to Amaya, and cut the two ANBU loose before sitting on the ground in front of the old woman as she started to rummage through the pack for food and water. She took out one of the prepackaged meals and handed it off to the old woman with a canteen of water, "You've gotten yourself into quite the predicament, Amaya." She passed out some food and water to the other two ANBU members, letting Hayate and Yuina help themselves. Hayate handed Demiyah her own meal and another canteen, giving a small smile as he sat down next to Demiyah. Yuina sat on Demiyah's other side, both removing their masks in the presence of their Kage and the elder who used to run the ANBU Black Ops. The ANBU sitting with Amaya did the same, happy to finally be free of the stuffy masks, if only for a little bit. Amaya eyed Demiyah carefully, "You speak as if I'm in trouble, Lady Kazekage." "Because you are," Demiyah replied, biting into a cracker lightly, her one good eye watching her friend and Elder. "The others will tell you that I was cruel and almost refused to come and get you, however, that isn't the case. I am merely angry that you decided to leave the village without not only a proper squad, but also without saying a word to me." "I don't need to tell you where I go and why, Demiyah," Amaya said defensively, taking a swig of water from her canteen, eying the Kazekage with a lifted eyebrow. Demiyah sighed, "That may be so, but not telling me seems to get you into these types of situations. What were they willing to kill you for, Amaya? What information were you bringing to the Land of Rivers?" Amaya glared at Demiyah, crossing her arms over her chest, "I'm not telling you that. It's not your business, anyway." Tightening her grip on her canteen, Demiyah lowered it from her lips after taking a small sip, glaring right back at Amaya with a stubborn expression. "That's not true, Amaya. If it's about Sunagakure, it's my business. If it wasn't my business before, my having to come out here to rescue you certainly makes it my business now. Tell me, what were they going to kill you for, Amaya?" The stubborn old lady seemed to know that she wasn't going to win this battle with the Kazekage. Demiyah hardly lost anything when it came to the Elders. They respected her too much. "I was inquiring about Kazama. If they'd seen him or if anything weird had been happening to their shinobi in the last few years. I have no idea why those men attacked me or if they were even after the information that I had. I think they were just thugs looking to make some money." Demiyah sighed, rubbing her forehead. "Alright. From now on, we keep quiet about Kazama. It's only bringing us trouble. I'll make an announcement at the Summit. Then we'll figure out how to take care of him from there." Demiyah stood up, looking in the direction of the village. "Let's go home, Amaya. You need to rest," she said lightly, holding her hand down to the elder. The old woman took her hand and stood up, nodding silently. They were soon back to Sunagakure, and Demiyah escorted all four ANBU and the Elder to the hospital to be checked out. She only went home when she was sure that Amaya was alright. Then she went home and grabbed her journal, cracking it open. In careful lettering, she wrote a single name below all the rest. Ren Masaki.
