Deep inside a mine somewhere in the Fire country, the flickering flame of a lantern drew two shadows on the wall. Konoha kunoichi Hara Kin and her sensei, a tiny fox named Don, were sneaking carefully forward. The surrounding stone was rough and cold. It made her toes curl with each unpleasant step. She was starting to regret taking this mission, but the elderly fox had insisted it would be an excellent training opportunity. Due to certain, recent events, training Senjutsu had become her first priority. That’s the only reason she had agreed to handle this insect problem. How hard could it be to exterminate a bunch of bugs anyway?
It was time to find out.
The duo rounded a corner bit carelessly and immediately reversed their steps. It was the jackpot of the ickiest kind. The floor, the walls, even the ceiling was crawling with ants. ...Except that these ants were as big as average house cats. Their natural armor was shining like metal and their sharp claws put ninja tools to shame. No wonder the poor Genin team had nearly gotten wiped out. Well, now the bugs were in for a nasty surprise. Hara sat down while Don kept watch on the creepy-crawlies. Closing her eyes, she focused onto the energy of nature beating within the stones and flowing in the air. Little by little, the power transferred.
Suddenly, wispy violet patterns spread around Hara’s eyes and black whisker lines spread onto her cheeks. As the tip of her nose turned black, the form was complete. Her grin was nothing short of crazy when she suddenly leaped into the ant horde. Despite the thick armor, the first bug fell dead from a single stab. One moved flowed into another. From a dash into a punch, a spin into kick and a leap into a flurry of mad slashes... Her claws passed through the frenzied opposition effortlessly. It was merciless and efficient. Within mere moments, dozens upon dozens of bugs were torn apart by the power of a Sage.
Turning to face the approaching horde, the Kitsune Sage stretched and swiped the air few times. She was simply shivering with how super she felt. Such power could not be described with words. For a moment, a strange chill sank into her bones, but she was too lost in the adrenaline rush to care. "Heh heh hee~! Who’s next? There’s plenty more where tha-erk." The rest of the cocky taunt got stuck in her throat when she realized there actually wasn’t plenty, or anything at all left. Her claws were gone and suddenly breathing turned difficult. It was like she had run a mile just now.
Disbelief was the word of the moment. Inching back, Hara questioned the whole situation. "It ran out already? Why? What did I do wrong, sensei?" However, Don only shook his head. "Nothing. That is simply your current limit. I told you to train, didn’t I?" Okay, sure, he had a point, but did he have to be so smug about it? The trickster dashed back and dodged into a side tunnel. Without wasting a moment, she sat down in the shadows and focused. It was only a matter of time until they reached her, but with a little luck she could gather enough energy to cut herself an escape route.
Just before Hara could gather more nature chakra, a sharp yell and a sharper smack blasted the concentration right out of her. "Don’t be a fool!" Don grabbed her by the belt and swiftly flung her further away from the approaching horde. "Sage Mode isn’t something to be used all willy-nilly. Nature chakra takes a heavy toll on the body. You can’t activate it more than once a fight." With a single leap, he landed right next to the panting kunoichi and gave her one of his famously chilling glares. "...Unless you want to turn into stone." That shut down all her will to protest. This little fox really knew what strings to pull.
Instead, the Kitsune focused her attention on getting out alive. A full blast from her raiton technique might’ve been barely enough, but there was just one tiny problem... She didn’t have time to charge it. Meanwhile, her summon seemed to be pondering what to have for lunch or something equally irrelevant, if his serene look was any indication. "Hm, worried already? Amusing. You do know Ninjutsu, don’t you? So why aren’t you already charging up that Raiton technique of yours?" Without even letting her get in a snide comment, the old fox stood between the approaching horde and his student. Suddenly, the tiny paws started going through enough hand seals for two techniques. "It is as they say... When all you have is Ninjutsu, everything starts looking like a hand seal." Hara’s stare and tone couldn’t get any flatter.
"...What?"
A mere blink later a massive inferno exploded through the mines. The ants were boiled within their armor as the combination of Katon and Fūton tore through their ranks, hundreds gone in an instant... Watching the smoldering remains, Don smiled just a little too broadly. There was a weird gleam in his eyes and Hara could’ve sworn she heard him snickering under his breath. He glanced at the staring student and cleared his throat. "Ahem... Don’t dawdle now, Hara. The rest are coming." Rather than even question it, she nodded and performed her own set of hand seals. Static electricity crackled between her teeth as the charge started building. This would be exhausting, but she had no choice.
When the second horde showed up, the Kitsune was ready. She opened her jaw and a mighty bolt of lightning shot forward. Stones and creatures alike were torn into pieces by destructive beam. When the scream of destruction was over, Hara swayed in place and promptly collapsed. Luckily, Don was there to catch her. "Well done. I sense there is only one of them left." He started walking deeper into the cavern the where the ant army had charged from. "It must be the queen, hiding in the deepest depths of this mine. Once we exterminate her, this infestation will be over for good." And of course, the exhausted kunoichi was unceremoniously dragged along.
Upon reaching the deepest chamber, the dynamic duo faced a stomach-turning sight. Inside a massive cavern, an utterly monstrous, bloated creature that barely resembled an ant anymore was constantly churning out eggs. The smell was something unimaginable. Don’s brow furrowed while Hara did her best to keep her breakfast down. "Disgusting... Finish her off so we can leave." The trickster didn’t even try to get up. "With what? I kinda used all my juice in that last blast. Can’t you take care of it?" The sly fox smirked. Clearly he had been expecting it since he had a response ready so quickly. "Under one condition. Tomorrow, we train until your very bones are screaming for mercy." At this point, the kunoichi didn’t have strength to even argue.
"Sheesh... Fine..."
Don smirked again with a spark of pyromania in his eyes. After a quick set of hand seals, he stomped the ground. Suddenly, the whole cavern floor beneath the creature cracked open. In it, roaring flames bathed the area in scorching light. The fox clapped his paws together, ending the show with a massive explosion. In the end, only ashes remained from the colony of monsters. Don admired the destruction for a while before glancing at the trickster. "Heh heh heh... Roasting enemies builds up appetite. Come now, let’s go get lunch." And in a puff, they were gone.
