TRY TWICE AS HARD AND I'M HALF AS LIKED. ✿ Finally. This was it! Her first official mission, and outside of the village no less! For her, it all felt like Christmas and her birthday rolled up into one. When her father had come to her hours earlier explaining the details and confirming that, yes, she is being trusted with something for once, she almost couldn't believe her ears. Or her eyes. Actually nothing made sense for several heart beats.
There was no amount of shame to be had when she jumped in the air and threw her arms out in early celebration. And she couldn't keep the smile off her lips. With her pack heavy with supplies needed for the trip, weapons sharpened, and spirits high, Asuka stood tall and anxiously excited at the village gates. She rocked back and forth on the balls of her feet, all but vibrating with the unspent energy. Among her teammates, she was the first to arrive, but then again, she had been waiting at the gates before sunrise-- before even the client himself had arrived.
Their client-- a potbelly old man by the name of Jiro-- busied himself by preparing his own things, rearranging and counting his merchandise within his cart, making sure his pony was well fed and ready for the brief trip to Konoha. So far, Asuka deemed him as a nice old man that did not seem to mind putting his safety in the hands of bunch of teenagers. His face appeared to be in a constant twist of amusement, especially after seeing Asuka ready and rearing to go.
"You're pretty excited for the trip," the old man chuckled, scribbling away on his inventory sheet. "Ever been to Konohagakure before?"
Asuka beamed, squaring her shoulders, the honesty rolling off her. "Nope! I haven't been outside the village before." And while that should have maybe given the client pause, he only chuckled some more. tag: Cheng Zu Mayu Nagato ▪ ooc: Feel free to throw in your own twists and ideas as you see fit! Or PM me. Whatever. Just have fun! We'll start with a brief introductory, then get the show on the road. Literally. :3 |

SEI SIND DAS ESSEN UND WIR SIND DIE jager Mayu had been on quite a few long-distance C-rank missions, so this wasn't really much to her. Only thing that she wasn't TOO used to were teammates. Her normal ones were pretty incompetent, and about 3/4ths of the time, she'd opt for any solo C-ranks out there just to get away from them. Though, the members that were assigned to the mission seemed all right. Well... at least better than the idiots who she normally worked with. A Taijutsu specialist and a swordsman, definitely a step up from the basic chakra techniques and rushing the enemy aimlessly. 'I swear, I was the only reason our instructor passed the team, and I'm not even being boastful right now...' She would sigh to herself sometimes.
But that was neither here nor there. Eating her heavy morning meal in order to prepare for the road trip, she tidied herself up once she was finished before heading to the rendezvous point, where she would meet the client and the rest of the team. 'Eh... today doesn't really feel like a day that I should scare the shit out of people,' She thought to herself, bounding across the rooftops using chakra. 'I guess I'll just introduce myself normally. Boring, but whatever.'
Finding her point, it seemed that the Taijutsu specialist and the client were already there. Mayu landed herself at the top of a tree, and proceeded to blend herself into the foliage to observe. Huh, she had a bag, and not a scroll. It was clarified further when the assassin-based Genin overheard that it was her first time getting out. Ah, okay. She'd made that mistake the first time she took an out-of-village, too. The brief conversation ended, and Mayu decided to come in.
She pushed herself from off the branch she was perched upon, and landed on her feet next to Asuka and Jiro. Taking a respectful bow, the girl greeted them officially, as if she was used this. Well... she was, so yeah. "Hello, it's nice to meet you, Jiro-sama." Mayu was SO tempted to say 'insert name-sama', but she resisted just barely. "My name is Mayu Nagato. I promise to ensure that your trip is comfortable and safe." She said, her signature wisp of a smile appearing on her face. She blinked once after she addressed Jiro, and looked him in the eye as she gave her name and promise. All very official, and all very professional.
[Since our first thread was voided, I'll have to assume that Mayu and Asuka have not met yet.]

[Sorry for the late reply. Life crept up on me!]
Cheng made his way towards the village gates. This would be one of his first official missions outside the village walls. Because his family had insisted that most of his time be spent honing his skills instead of earning money, something that their family had plenty of, he hadn't really signed up for anything. Though after a recent training session with the Mizukage he was advised to put his name in and help out with this one. It was unclear why, other than just to push him towards getting some practical experience but Cheng was just pleased to hear his skills had proven he'd be qualified for a C-Rank mission.
As he approached the entrance to the village he saw that he was the last one there. He didn't think much of this, perhaps his arrogance getting the best of him, but as he got within earshot he offered an apology to the man they would be escorting. Once he saw that everyone was prepped and settled in he decided to introduce himself. He looked around at the people he'd be spending the next couple days with, of which he was only familiar with one, Asuka Yuki. Her family was close with his and that made them friends by proxy. They had also both spent time together in the academy so he was pleased to see her here. It would be easy to work together since they were familiar with each others basic combat styles.
Cheng turned to face the other two. "My name is Cheng, of the Zu family. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Let us pray our trip is uneventful, though you can count on me should anything go wrong." His voice was dutiful, yet calm. In the mission briefing he had received it sounded like there was not expected to be any kind of trouble which suited him just fine. He rested his right hand on the hilt of the dao that hung from his belt.

TRY TWICE AS HARD AND I'M HALF AS LIKED. ✿ Mayu near startled Asuka right out of her skin when she landed with a soft thump beside her. She jumped and spun to face the other genin, feigning off the small bout of fright as nothing the best she could. I'm just nervous, she told herself, remembering to breathe. Everything will be fine. It will all go smoothly and she can come back home with pride and maybe a little more respect from her father. Maybe. God, she can only hope.
Asuka grinned at Mayu as the girl introduced herself to their client. She didn't know much about her, other than what was said at the mission briefing. She did not seem really all that, well, creepy as rumors have been made to make her believe. In fact, she appeared downright normal to Asuka. Really, she didn't see what the big fuss was really about. So her hair is dark and she's a little pale. If anything, she and her father could have that in common.
No sooner after Mayu settled herself in, Cheng arrived. And Asuka was quick to throw an arm out and wave, smile broadening as the sight of him quelled the nervous flips in her stomach a little. Having someone she knew outside a sheet of paper on the team for this mission made finding confidence easier. She knew Cheng's skills first hand, and knew that dao at his hip wasn't just for show.
Now that everyone for the trip was present, Asuka stood tall on her feet and placed her hands at her hips in every attempt to make herself appear more excited than nervous to start. "Alright, we're all here! I'm Asuka by the way," she paused to properly introduce herself mostly to Mayu. "Asuka Yuki. And if everyone's ready, we can leave for Konohagakure." I'm ready, she said to herself. I've been ready for hours!
Jiro climbed onto his wagon and took the reins of his pony in hand, a smile still stretched across his face, raring to go and otherwise leaving no hint of worry for leaving his life in the hands of children. "Lead the way, you three. I'm ready when you are."
Asuka nodded to Jiro once, eyes drifting away to Cheng and Mayu, before she spun on her heel and faced the long road ahead. She took a deep breath, shouldered a pack a little tighter against her back, and took the first step to their journey to the Fire Country.

SEI SIND DAS ESSEN UND WIR SIND DIE jager "Ah, I'll have to request something in order to make your protection more optimal, Jiro-sama." Mayu raised her hand, calling the old man's attention. "Yes, Nagato-san?" The kindly old man replied. It seems that this is where her nice-person facade would end. Hopefully, she isn't shunned by her teammates for doing this, god knows it's happened before on missions. Mayu pointed at a life-sized wooden statue on his cart, one that resembled a girl. "Do you mind if I stand next to that statue?"
The merchant seemed confused. "Ah, why would you need to do that, Kunoichi-san? You don't want to walk with the others?" "No, no, I'd walk if it would be the best option. However, if bandits attempt to raid your cart, this may give me the upper hand in it's protection." Still scratching his head, Jiro nodded reluctantly.
Mayu jumped into the cart and next to the wooden girl statue. She gave a straight, stiff pose and a fake smile before activating her kekkei genkai, where both Asuka and Cheng could see. Her clothes became like carved wood in it's color, but then her skin and hair also changed to resemble wood. Any color they had suddenly became painted in it's consistency. Next, the folds of her kimono and dress became like polygons, carved with a knife little by little. Her jaw and face also seemed to mimic this, and her eyes closed to reveal eyelids that looked like they were painted over with black. Even her fingers were rectangles at that point. Lastly, cracks begun to appear over the 'wood', in her hair, on her face, on her dress.
She blended in with the girl statue completely, like a piece of merchandise that was ready to sell for quite a few ryo. Jiro rubbed his eyes, still in awe. "No way. So this is the power of a ninja..." Then it hit him. If a bandit tried to steal her, a trained killer, then he may meet his early demise. Taking a few breaths to process this information, the old man faced Cheng. "Ah, are you ready to go now? It seems both the girls are..." He glanced at the statue-Mayu. "...ready. Ahem."

"Absolutely. It's best if we head out immediately." Cheng had watched as Nagato had performed her technique. Despite how closely he'd kept his eye on her though he was unable to discern what kind of jutsu it had been. It lacked the immediacy of a transformation and looked to require no sequence of hand signs. He was a little annoyed that some person whom he'd never met would be taking the easy ride while he was forced to walk in front of this member of the merchant class, but that was the life he lived. What annoyed him more than this was that this shinobi had already devised a plan of attack in case of danger, something he'd not yet had a chance to work on. Despite his frustration he turned quickly and started walking to catch up with Asuka, assuming the merchant wouldn't be far behind.
They had been walking for quite a time and he wasn't totally sure how far they had left to go but it was clear that everyone was ready to take a break. Cheng had a sense that Asuka wouldn't want to be the one to suggest it though. From what he knew of her personality Cheng figured she'd try and show as little weakness as possible to her new allies, even if she needed a rest. As for the merchant, Jiro, he was constantly wiping sweat from his brow. The ride was more mentally taxing than it was physical but the warm weather in this region didn't make any kind of prolonged exposure pleasant, especially for the animals pulling his cart. Nagato was; Well she was still as wooden as she was when they'd left the village.
And Cheng? Well he too didn't want to admit it but between the constant walking, occasional scouting ahead and behind them and the heat of the sun at midday, he was ready to take a break. He raised his right hand up and stopped in his tracks. After taking a deep breath he turned to face the merchant. "I think we'd best find some shade and take a break. We're making good time and I think we can afford to catch our breath." As he pointed towards a shaded group of trees hidden from the road he grabbed a small flask filled with water off his waist and took a short drink before offering it forward to Asuka.

TRY TWICE AS HARD AND I'M HALF AS LIKED. ✿ When Mayu suggested she sit in the cart, Asuka gave the other girl the most bewildered expression she is capable of. At first, she thought Mayu was trying to get out of walking, for whatever reason. Even when she tried to explain herself, Asuka was still utterly confused. Sure, it was great that Mayu was thinking ahead in case they do run into trouble, but what would standing beside a statue in the cart do to help? There were words being thrown around that Asuka couldn't follow, and it hurt her head to try and keep up. She just wanted to get moving. They had a week's worth of journey to complete, and she was eager to see it through. Jiro seemed just as confused as she was, but without any interference, Mayu did as she suggested. Except, she didn't just sit in the cart. Something peculiar began to shift in her appearance, and it wasn't until the act was finished did Asuka understand what just happened. Well, sort of. She understood that Mayu had changed herself into a near replica of the statue sitting in the cart. What she didn't understand was how. It wasn't like anything she had seen before. Her entire body reflected the same materials as the statue; even her hair! Asuka stared, trying to figure out if it's an illusion, or what-- but Jiro's small awed comment derailed her thoughts. Asuka bristled, turning bright red in the face. She resisted the urge to snap at their client, but could not stop her irritable words coming out before they started off. "So she turns into a statue. Big deal." She stormed ahead, sidling up along Cheng and shouldering her pack tight against her shoulders. Why is it when anyone does anything with their stupid chakra, it's amazing?"I'll make sure we won't be attacked! We're going to have the most boring journey ever," she declared a little hotly.
Though, as it turned out, Cheng did most of the scouting as they journeyed on. Mayu hadn't moved a single muscle, which annoyed Asuka because as the hours rolled on, her exhaustion grew and she had begin lagging a bit behind the cart. So she had nothing to do but glare at Mayu's statue-et form, just waiting for the opportunity to point and laugh should the konichi ever break her kekkai. The sun was high and beating down on them, and well, call her relieved when Cheng finally decided that they all should take a break.
"Good idea," Jiro piqued, and pulled his pony off the road toward the trees. "We all could use a breather. Especially, er... How are you doing back there, miss Nagato?"
Asuka snapped. "This is ridiculous! I don't see the reason for you being in the cart," she pointed an accusing finger at Mayu. "You're just sitting there while the rest of us do the work!" And she would have gone on. On, and on, and on, because she was hot, hungry and annoyed. But Cheng's offer of his water canteen had her biting her tongue. She paused, and took the canteen with a small smile, grateful for the concern. "Thanks, Cheng."
They needed a break. Lunch was a good idea, and then they could walk until dark. Asuka frowned one more time at Mayu, then took a couple of sips from the canteen before turning it to Cheng. She glanced at the swordsman, then at the path ahead of us. "Did you see anything bad on your last scout?"So far, it's been quiet. Very quiet. |

SEI SIND DAS ESSEN UND WIR SIND DIE jager "I'm good, Jiro-sama." She replied, still in her statue form. Her mouth barely moved, but she'd done this long enough that her voice was clear to him. As it was, her bloodline made her stiff as a board and slow as a snail whenever she used it, which, really, was a fair trade to natural stealth. If she wanted to actually move a muscle, she'd have to turn it off.
Oh, Asuka-san got pissed. Oh dear, it seems like this was going to be a recurring theme with people who she works with. Everybody gets angry whenever she was able to use her disguise for one reason or another. It's justifiable, so Mayu really couldn't blame them for their annoyance. "I deeply apologize that my lack of movement is lazy, and I will admit, it is unfair." Her face still remained neutral as she said this, but her inflection sounded like she didn't mean to offend anybody. And she didn't, truly. It was just how she did things. "But to optimize our defenses against any attempts against Jiro-sama, I have to do this. It's part of getting the job done, is all. Again, I'm sorry."
As the pony rode into the woods, Mayu reflected on her companions this mission. Cheng seemed nice enough, the trip. Honorable, really, and he had a good mind. Kind of fit for a kenjutsu specialist. Asuka seemed to be the type to put in hard work and expect others to put in hard work. She also didn't tolerate laziness, and reacted somewhat hotly to her kekkei genkai. 'Good at heart, and a wonderful person, but...' Mayu's thoughts strayed to all the other faces she'd seen scowling at her, the memories starting to inflict slight sadness. 'Just like the others. I can't blame them, I really can't, but it still feels... I'm just doing my job, right?' She went mentally silent as the pony halted to a stop, a sense of melancholy developing.
Jiro got off his seat and started stretching his limbs. "Man, my legs are killing me! Oof, it's so nice to get off your seat every once in a while." He minded his wares, and glanced at the stoic Mayu, still standing there inconspicuously. "Ah, Nagato-san? We're taking a break." With that, she was snapped out of her thoughts, and put on a slightly depressing smile as she disabled her kekkei genkai and jumped off the cart. "Thank you, Jiro-sama."
Being a teenager, it was, of course, very easily to get emotionally distressed. Mayu was aware of this, and tried to fight any emotion that may affect her and her job. Traditionally, shinobi weren't supposed to let these things faze them. But now was break time, and after a moment of remembering the reason why she had no friends, Mayu let herself go, just this once. As soon as Jiro's back was turned, she went to Asuka, looked her in the eye, and said for the third time that day, "I'm sorry." Her insincere ghost smile disappeared, leaving a line of a depressed frown and pale, cold eyes, the eyes of somebody who's been questioning themselves for a good amount of time.
Teenage angst or not, sometimes she wondered if the job was worth losing good people.

TRY TWICE AS HARD AND I'M HALF AS LIKED. ✿ While Jiro busied himself with unloading his pony from the cart and settling in for a good lunch, Asuka was suddenly faced with a incredibly sincere apology from Mayu. The girl approached her, looked her dead in the eye, and said 'sorry.' And Asuka stared, albeit a little confused and taken entirely off guard. Suddenly she felt like the bad guy, and visibly deflated, sighing past her lips. Some part of her knew she was socially awkward by default, and her temper did not make the best impression in people. But she knew she must have hurt Mayu's feelings somehow, and as much as her pride burned to take it all back, it wouldn't do any of them good to have the two of them at odds with one another like this. Asuka had always been curt with people she did not know. It's a defense she had built over the years that derived from an intense trust issue that really started with her father. While she has these issues to deal with, Mayu did not deserve the brunt of her anger. Raising a hand to rub the stress out of the back of her neck, Asuka tilted her eyes away and mumbled her next set of words to Mayu. "You don't have to apologize."She could have gone on. She could have acknowledged that Mayu was only doing her job and that her kekkai genkai is actually pretty impressive; unique and kind of cool. But giving that much was a feat for even her. Hopefully Mayu has a good sense of hearing between the words because she wasn't about to say more. In fact, Asuka is quite ready to drop it altogether and move on. Turning on her heel, she rejoined Cheng's side and dropped her pack at her feet to rummage through for a snack. And more water. Damn this heat. Cheng kept himself alert, nothing short of what she would expect from the swordsman and their break carried on without much incident. Once everyone was rested, Asuka helped Jiro hook his wagon back up to his pony and the four of them were on the move again. During their trek, this time Asuka did not voice a single complaint about Mayu. Her eyes often drifted toward the other girl though, making sure she was okay in her position in the wagon. She may not have a definite control on her own chakra, but she did understand the concentration and the stress that can build up from prolonged jutsus and kekkai genkais. She just hoped that Mayu did not burn herself out too quickly. They did have a long way to go yet. All too soon, the sun began to set, and their first night was upon them. They made quite a dent in their journey, and according to Cheng, they may very well arrive in Konoha ahead of schedule, which is good news to Jiro. They set up camp for the night, building a campfire between them and strategically securing their perimeter for any potential threat. Asuka was quick to volunteer to take first watch. Honestly, at this rate, she really did not expect much excitement through the night. At the mission briefing, there had been mentions of marauders and bandits having their eyes set on Jiro's wares, hence the whole reason for an escort. But there hasn't been hint nor clue to anyone scheming against them. Yet. Asuka sighed, and crossed her arms, pausing in her rounds about their campsite to take in the clear night sky hidden overhead by a dense canopy of trees. She yawned once, a long winded yawn that forced a stretch of her arms. Exhaustion crept into her consciousness, but she shook her head to rid herself of such ideas of sleep and rest. This is important, she reminded herself. I'm finally doing what's expected of me as a shinobi. Stay away, Asuka.Back at the campsite, a twig snapped in the darkness. Jiro's pony shifted restlessly, shaking his mane and flicking his tail in a nervous twitch. The forest sat quiet. No crickets or owls to be heard. Jiro himself slept soundlessly, but something was not right. |
