SEI SIND DAS ESSEN UND WIR SIND DIE jager As Mayu set her tent in the camping site, she noted that the sun was setting on an angle to her right. 'I'm facing Southwest, then.' She continued setting up her tent, keeping that random muse in the back of her head. _______________________________
To be a shinobi meant to be a light sleeper. That was one of the first lessons they taught at Kirigakure's Academy, in part with all conditioning required to serve effectively as ninja. Now, this did not mean that you don't sleep, or you don't get drowsy, it just meant that you must train yourself to wake up at the softest of sounds. Some people, who were interested in the more powerful, direct side of being a shinobi didn't heed these words, and some survived and some died because of them. Some people took these words wrong, and didn't get enough rest, which hindered them in the field. Then some of them did it right.
Mayu was in the third category, given that she was born and raised to be an effective killer for her village. She made sure to be able to catch people offguard when they think they're attacking a defenseless opponent, as well as not lose her head to some of the more underhanded men. This trained habit was also fortified by her constant travels in an effort to break away from her current team, and she often had to sleep light to stop any bandits that came over her campsites. Sometimes it was silence that heralded an intruder, sometimes it was noise. She slept light and knew the signs.
So when a twig snapped hours after any movement strong enough to do so from her left, Mayu's eyes snapped open from her tent and she slowly grabbed a kunai from her storage scroll that lied next to her, making sure not to make any sudden movements so as to scare off any enemies or possible game. Keeping her eyes towards the general area of the cart, she listened for wildlife. There should be some, crickets, owls, birds of prey, anything, really. There was only the pony's whinny, and it seemed cautious about the situation. Crawling at a dead pace, she opened up the door partway and peeked her head out, silver eyes scouting the branches and treetops.
A flock of ravens suddenly emerged from the southeast, their distinctive caws easily recognized by Mayu. 'But they're diurnal... If birds suddenly rise in flight, there is an ambush.' The snap... she remembered noting down her direction when she set the tent. It was also from the southeast! Damn it! Her eyes widening, she quickly opened the entrance to her tent fully and rushed out, hastily grabbing and slipping on her kimono top. Ripping open Cheng's tent, he groggily woke up and asked her what's up. "There's a 50% chance we're being ambushed right now, from the southeast." His eyes widened and he grabbed his blade, hopping onto his feet. When asked how she knew, she replied briefly, still keeping her eye on the southeast. "The horse's neighs are worried, and there isn't a cricket or owl to be heard. Also..." She noticed a stray raven that was late in leaving the nest, and pointed at it's cawing form. "Ravens are only awake at day unless startled. Either there's a wild animal or there's a bandit."
The genin, following her logic, nodded and quickly went off to alert and possibly defend Jiro. 'Asuka-san... she's on patrol, so she may be in a different direction entirely. I can't rely on her presence, then.' Which sucked, because a taijutsu user would be very convenient given their ability within certain ranges to devastate any opponents quickly. She couldn't blend in, as they could be anywhere at this point, and movement was vital. Nodding to herself, she quickly made the tiger seal and begun concentrating chakra for the Kirigakure no Jutsu, keeping an eye out. If anything, it will give both her and Cheng an advantage, given that even the least talented of Kiri civilians can see through the technique simply because of the sheer adaption required to function in a Village Hidden in the Mist.

TRY TWICE AS HARD AND I'M HALF AS LIKED. ✿ The sudden scatter of ravens was enough to jar her senses back into focus, and she turned in place, watching the startled birds caw angrily away at something she couldn't see. A silence fell around her the moment they cleared the area, and Asuka felt a creeping sense of being watched crawling up her spine. Shit. Maybe her nerves were really getting to her. She hadn't seen or heard anything. The birds might have gotten scared off by some wild cat. Yeah, that's it. Nothing to be afraid of, right? Still, maybe she should go check on Mayu and the others. Just to be safe. Swallowing thickly, Asuka backpedaled, turning to head back to their camp site, but she caught herself short the instant something tight and thin bent around her left ankle. Freezing in mid step, her amber irises cast down to find the thinnest trace of a wire caught against her pants. Oh crap-- She barely had time to think, but knew it was a trap before it went off. The springs snapped, and an explosion, hot and loud, erupted around her, throwing the Kiri-nin back against a very solid tree without pause. Black and red splattered in her vision and oxygen escaped her lungs in a rush. And then just like that, Asuka, went down. Back at the campsite, things only progressed for the worst. While Cheng and Mayu prepared themselves around a nervous Jiro and his wares, the explosion that came from Asuka's trek was enough to make the pony rear back and whinny something terrible. The masterminds behind the disturbance found this all very too easy. Bandits, some called them. Marauders, scoundrels, thieves. But they preferred to be called by name. "Well, well. I think this is our lucky day, Twiggs," chortled the first, his dark attire making it easy for him to skulk about in the night of the forest, but he stalked out into the light of the open fire anyway. His eyes smirked at Mayu and Cheng, while his brother, Twiggs, took his place beside him, all brute strength and with tall prowess to show in his arms. "This is serious, Boom. We're not here to play around," grumbled Twiggs, crossing his arms, one hand fingering a kunai. "Let's just take their wares and go." "Aw, you're no fun. Fine, fine. You're the boss dear brother." Boom grinned, all sharp teeth with a menacing stare, clearly amused at the idea of two kids being all that stands in his way. He gestured with a hand, while his other casually twirled a blade in threat. "Come on now. Hand over the goods, and you little squirts can go home with your heads." tag: Mayu Nagato ▪ ooc: making it up as i go~ feel free to do what you please with the NPCs. :3 |

SEI SIND DAS ESSEN UND WIR SIND DIE jager These two... even when they had the element of surprise, they still show themselves in the open. She wasn't scared of such men; she'd seen them too many times before. Sharpened teeth, casual killing, such hubris. They'd ended with their jugulars gushing like a fountain and a blade in their skull. Cheng readied his stance and Jiro backed away, closer to his stand. Mayu, however, looked at them with half-lidded eyes. Time for the regular routine of hard, cold acting.
"Oy... just because I look like I'm the age of my students, doesn't really mean I am one." Mayu bluffed coolly, not an inch of lying in her tone. She dropped a few octaves to match her bluff. Cheng noticed this and averted his eyes to her, but didn't show anything else otherwise. "I suppose it must be the slowed aging. Since these are your last moments to live, I'll tell you a neat S-Ranked secret that Kirigakure has." The genin took a stance that made her seem animalistic. Mayu activated her kekkei genkai to make her eyes seem demonic, glowing a hellish red with a slit for the middle. Her skin turned slightly blue, enough for the bandits to notice. Lastly, the girl smiled a killer's smile, which was able to visibly stun the two fools. Meanwhile, with her tiger seal, the Kirigakure no Jutsu was starting to maximize and slightly overload from her chakra input. "They have a jinchuuriki in their arsenal, and you happened to provoke her! HIDDEN DEMON ART: UPPER HEAVEN OF SHINOBI!"
With that, her features suddenly became rather monstrous at the last second. Her skin turned a deep azure and started growing 'deadly' spikes, and she showed all her teeth. The Kirigakure finally shot off from her mouth, covering the world in mist in a flash. Mayu's throat became extremely parched and her voice got raspy due to the overloading of the Kirigakure, and she winced as the Kiri contingency was enshrouded from the eyes of the enemy.
Without using words, the girl created a singular water clone: All she could afford without receiving a significant hit to her stamina. The clone made to go to the other side of the two criminals while she gave out very few explanations to Cheng with a rasp. "O-Overloaded Kirigakure. I'll scare, then you separate them. Does that work?" Cheng gave a nod as he awaited the 'scare', while Jiro overheard the conversation while trying to calm his pony down.
Meanwhile, the bandits looked around in confusion as her voice came from every direction. In reality, it was just two of them on opposite sides. One was deep, as she spoke before; that was the vocally-able clone. The other was high and raspy, like a witch; the real one. "EHAHAHAHAHA! THE MORE YOU BREATH IT IN, THE MORE IT'LL EAT YOU FROM THE INSIDE! ONLY WATER AFFINITIES CAN SURVIVE! YOU HAVE FIVE MINUTES TO LIVE, AT THIS RATE!"
"That bitch! Fuck, I'm a fire affinity! Cover your fucking mouth!" "I'm trying to release this fucking genjutsu, and nothing's happening! Shit, where are they?!" Cheng took his cue and rushed forwards, seeing fine in the mist. He assaulted Twiggs while Mayu went to do her thing.
'God... my throat hurts like a bitch. Alright, time to fight.' Mayu went to do the standard maneuver with her clone in this type of situation. The man was taller than her, so her takedown Taijutsu wouldn't work. The genin applied chakra to her feet before jumping above the mist, keeping her eye on Boom's head. 'Kind of disproportionate, but I've hit targets smaller than this in the Academy...' Pulling out a shuriken upon the peak of her jump, she threw it at his cranium.
Boom kept his blade in his hand as he watched for the woman, one arm covering his mouth and nose. Suddenly, a familiar steel sounded above him. Looking up, he easily parried the shuriken clearly aimed at his head. 'Heh! Stupid demon bitch! Probably a fucking lunati-' Suddenly, the woman in human form assaulted him from his side as he was stuck in his thoughts of pride. He parried her sloppily, and went off-balance on his stance as he kept his focus on her. Suddenly, something came from above, and a searing pain and the feeling of wind came from his back. Boom roared in pain as Mayu finished her downwards descent, using her momentum to stab him in the back and slice downwards, her kunai still imbedded in his flesh.
'Filthy pig...'

TRY TWICE AS HARD AND I'M HALF AS LIKED. ✿ Boom and Twiggs met their demise under the guise of having far too much pride. They underestimated children for being nothing more than that, and paid for it. They were not prepared for the tricks and the extensive skill of deceiving from either Mayu or Cheng. Lack of preparation caused them to fall miserably into their own trap. Boom fell first, in blood and pain, his backside torn asunder by a clever Mayu. Twiggs found himself far too distracted by his brother's cry to properly defend himself, and was quickly taken down by Cheng's skills. As battles tended to go, it all came to an end as quickly as it started. And Asuka missed it all. Her body ached, her arms burned and her head spun, but somehow or another, she managed to force herself off the ruined forest grounds and stumble back to the campsite. Asuka couldn't begin to tell time from the placement of the sun, to her own two feet, so she couldn't begin to know how long she was out or how long it took her to get back. But when she returned, she was greeted by the sight of Cheng tying down two badly defeated men, an exhausted Mayu, and a Jiro frantically checking his wares. Aside from the cuts and ash plastering against her face and auburn hair, the look of bewildered confusion was apparent on her face. "W-what," she coughed, her throat sore among other things. "What happened? Mayu?" She paused to lean against a nearby tree, the burns along her arms putting all her nerves on fire, and yet she refused to crumble under the pain. Asuka bit her lip and forced the tears that wanted to escape back. She could only hope that adrenaline will keep her upright before the cold sweat working on her brow did her in. Jiro noticed her first. "Asuka! Oh dear," he fretted, hurrying over, raising his hands to help, but afraid to touch given the battered form of the young shinobi. "Your arms... Are you okay?" Asuka shook her head with a little more frustration than was necessary. She heaved in air, and pushed herself from the tree, demanding that her body stand on its own. "I'm fine. What happened?" She asked again, eyes darting to Mayu. "Is everyone okay?"tag: Mayu Nagato ▪ ooc: short, but we're going to wrap this mission up in a few more posts. |

SEI SIND DAS ESSEN UND WIR SIND DIE jager God, her throat was way too dry. She'd burned through quite a few water bottles trying to hydrate herself, but as it was, the Kirigakure no Jutsu was a pain when overloaded. The battle could have done better, could have been worse. She just wished she'd thought of her monologue a bit sooner. In the aftermath, Mayu had begun tending to herself as the fate of the bandits was discussed between the men. Nobody else was hurt all that much at camp, and she only hoped that Asuka was alright. But still, chakra exhaustion did not mix well with the human body, and she was forced to relax herself in order to recover.
...It wouldn't be the case, however. Clear burns were all over her arms, and she was on the verge of toppling down at any minute. From her previous experience, Mayu had to guess that she got hit with an explosive note or two. She had to be tended to, or else risk infection or other possible problems. With whatever rasp she had at that hour, the blackette responded briskly to Asuka's various inquiries on the situation as she readied a scroll from her skirt pockets. "We're alright, Yuki-san. Two criminals atttempted to forcefully coerce Jiro into giving up his wares. They were stopped."
Mayu then applied chakra to the available scroll and obtained a basic first-aid kit. A mandatory lesson in the Academy was the knowledge on how to properly tend to common injuries in the field, and these type of kits were freely distributed in supply packs. "You've been injured, Yuki-san." She stated neutrally, still having a dry throat and messy, stained clothes. "Please, take a seat. You shouldn't continue going on without tending to your injuries." Which was true, as the mission would be hindered greatly if she had further problems. That, and the Nagato wasn't as much of a cold bitch as most people thought she was.

TRY TWICE AS HARD AND I'M HALF AS LIKED. ✿ Hearing that everything was fine, despite the obvious issue about a couple of bandits trying to ambush them-- and as far as she was concerned, succeeded-- set a wave of relief through her. Her teammates were fine as was their client. Jiro continued to fret where Asuka swayed on her feet, feeling exhaustion sweeping up under her in the wake of everything. Yet as with everything in her life, she refused to fall and allow herself any kind of respite. They still had to get to Konoha. Mayu, surprisingly, was quick to come to her aide, reassuring her that everything was fine and that she needed medical treatment. Asuka tried mumbling it off as nothing, shaking her head, but not doing much else to stop her teammate from bringing out a first aid kit. And the sight of the red colored box had her reassessing her state of being for the second time that evening. Asuka raised her own arms out between them, staring down at the angry blistery red burns blossoming over her skin. And despite the pain suddenly being refocused on her injuries, she let out a small broken laugh. She was in no position to argue really, and with Mayu's encouragement, she wandered over to the back of Jiro's cart and sat up on its edge. Embarrassment and shame of her situation kept her from looking Mayu in the eyes as she surrendered her beaten arms out for treatment. Silence fell aside from the few hisses Asuka couldn't help when alcoholic swabs and bandages met her inflamed skin. And just when the silence was beginning to be too much even for her, Asuka moved her watery amber irises to Mayu. "S-sorry," she mumbled barely above a whisper. Though what she was apologizing for, she wasn't sure. Still, she felt as if it needed to be said. "You don't have to call me Yuki, by the way. Asuka is fine."Her eyes drooped dangerously, and she let them close for only a second before forcefully pulling them back open. She was suddenly feeling very cold and could only assume it was because of the burns; her body trying to cool down. "We should keep going," she continued quietly, only loud enough for Mayu's ears. "The mission comes first. We need to get Jiro to Konoha..." She twisted a wiry smile at the blacknette. "I'll be okay. Thank you, Mayu."Asuka was never one for honorifics or calling people by their last name, but something about calling Mayu by name and nothing else was special in itself. Mayu was doing all her best, and managed to defend the camp without her help. She shouldn't have been so mean earlier about her tactics. Asuka knew now it was only her jealously talking. And if anything, she has learned not to judge a book by its cover. tag: Mayu Nagato ▪ ooc: feel free to have them move along. I suppose we can end this in one more post for the each of us. :3 |

SEI SIND DAS ESSEN UND WIR SIND DIE jager Amber met silver as a silent sorry was issued, with Mayu looking as polite as she could when tending to her. "Asuka it is, then." Mayu concluded, tending to her wounds. Burns were rather simplistic, but also difficult if you applied the wrong amount of pressure. Still, the quality of her medical skill proved to be enough for Asuka's injuries, at least for now. The burns seemed deeper than they looked, but Mayu didn't have the ability to tend to something like that, so she just tended to them to minimalize work for the Konoha medics.
"Alright, I've done what I could." As she pocketed the first-aid kit back into the scroll and the scroll into her dress, Mayu gave one last question of "You going to be okay?" Upon a positive response and another thanks, Mayu simply nodded to her comrade. Maybe she wasn't like all the others, so hotheaded and prideful. Hopefully, she would be proved right upon any later meetings with Asuka. "You're welcome." Mayu said, now standing up and patting herself down. The sore throat was starting to get better, and she felt saliva in her mouth once more.
Cheng agreed on the notion of advancing, and Mayu just nodded along. It would be best not to dwell in this area, in case the two bandits had any allies lying around. Additionally, Asuka's wounds would be able to be tended to a bit more quickly; good, as Mayu knew her treatment could only do so little, as compared to a full medic or hospital. Jiro went along with this notion, and with that, the three ninja and their client moved along the path towards Konohagakure.
