At the beginning of the world there existed eleven powerful beasts, known as the bijuu. The bijuu were immense creatures made up of the mystical energy known as chakra and possessed power that was unparalleled by any other being. It was out fear of this power that humanity sealed them within the earth centuries ago. Sealing the beasts had an unforeseen consequence however. Humanity lost its connection to chakra. These people had hoped that by settling close to the base of the mountain where the beasts had been sealed that their connection to this power would one day be restored. Over time this story became nothing more than a legend and this legend was eventually forgotten by most. For many years most of humanity lived peacefully in ignorance at the base of this dormant volcano.
Fifty years ago this volcano erupted without any warning, devastating the country that had formed around it. Most of the villages and cities were destroyed and many humans in the area lost their lives. Those that did survive were left with next to nothing. Because the land surrounding the volcano had been ravaged by the eruption and the air had become too difficult to breathe these people were forced to find a new place to live. Before long the survivors came together in groups and spread to the far corners of the continent in search of a new home. Many of these groups came into contact with other humans, distant relatives of their ancestors that had chosen to stay behind instead of settle at the mountain. Together they forged new villages.
As time went on these new settlements slowly expanded into cities of their own, developing their own customs, traditions and governments. While the continent began to evolve, so did the people. Unbeknownst to them, the volcanic eruption had been caused by the release of an ancient power. The seal that trapped the bijuu had been broken and with their freedom came the return of chakra to the world. Humans who had lived for centuries without this power were suddenly able to accomplish impossible feats such as breathing fire and walking on water. Not everyone was capable of manipulating chakra however and this quickly caused a divide in humanity. Anyone who was able to use the power of the bijuu was quickly shunned by modern society and many of these individuals were forced out of their homes once more. This caused many of them to turn to criminal behaviour to survive and this widened the divide and condemnation for those who could use chakra. Those that didn’t become bandits or criminals often worked as mercenaries, their powers proving to be a powerful asset out in the field.
Despite their bad reputation, there were those who wished for this discrimination to stop. Foremost among these were clans of these chakra users, who dubbed themselves shinobi. Many of these clans were descendants of the ancient people who were able to use chakra and had continued to pass down their old world traditions to their children. Because of this they quickly learned to properly manipulate chakra and demonstrated this prowess in the form of jutsu. There were a variety of clans that proposed shinobi should come together to create their own villages. The first of these villages came to be known as the Village Hidden in Heaven, located at the heart of the Land of Life. The Ishiyama clan, who had been the driving force behind the villages creation, was now incredibly powerful and this has spurred shinobi all across the continent to try and follow suit, working to develop their own villages in their respective countries.
In the past few months the Village Hidden in Heaven has been recognized by the Land of Life as an official military force and has offered aid to them in exchange for taking on specialized missions that require the expertise of a shinobi. This has caused other counties to become concerned about their own safety and has largely destabilized the continent. Wandering shinobi and clans across the world scramble to build their own villages and those that hate shinobi do everything they can to stop them. And now the bijuu have started to awaken. They are using their freedom to roam the continent, occasionally attacking human settlements and caravans.
This is where our story starts. Will you seek to help stabilize the continent by contributing to the creation of other shinobi villages or will you do everything in your power to stop this from happening? What you do with this world is up to you.
