Many people took it for granted that rank and skill came without any effort. There was usually some kind of excuse made for how people became as skilled as they were - whether they used the word "Talent" or whether they assumed there was some kind of secret tip to becoming skilled, people generally tended to think that people had some sort of secret means for becoming as good as they did. Very rarely did they ever truly believe that hard work alone could be responsible. Kazama almost wished that were true this morning when he climbed out of bed at five o'clock. He remembered spending an hour getting his breakfast, washing up and putting on his Shinobi gear before heading out into the streets and arriving at the training grounds at about six o'clock. He'd spent most of his waking hours since doing exercise after exercise, working hard to keep his body in peak condition. At the age of forty-eight you tended to notice when your body was underperforming and Kazama was determined not to let himself go just because of something like age. He was no longer seen on the front lines, but that didn't mean he was comfortable with slacking off. Of course, even Kazama had limits. Having spent much of the morning working out constantly, he had eventually ended up exhausting all of the energy he'd received from his breakfast. Taking a brief break from his exercising, the older man left the ground to fetch himself lunch. Managing to find a place not too far, he took his time to sit down and eat a proper meal. He made sure to stay within his diet, of course, but he had to make sure he had some kind of energy in his body if he was going to keep exercising for the rest of the day. In less than an hour he finished his lunch and got back up. Walking back to the training grounds, the older man didn't waste his time heading back to where he'd been working out all morning. As he approached, however, he could hear a sound. Was someone else using the training grounds now? Possible, considering that it was now past noon. As he stepped onto the ground he caught sight of another person in the area. From what he could see, it appeared to be a somewhat familiar face. TAG: Dee. WORDS: I dunno. NOTES: First post!

Demiyah had been up since four. The nightmares made it impossible for her to sleep too long. Usually she got about six hours of sleep in a night, if that. It all depended on how her mind decided to work from day to day. Wanting to make herself at least a little useful in the early hours, she'd spent a minimal amount of time bathing and eating her breakfast, opting for fresh fruit and biscuits over something unhealthy. By five, she was sitting at her desk, alone in her office, her eyes scanning over scroll after scroll without pausing for even a small break. Her assistant, once he'd arrived, had placed a cup of mint tea on her desk which she'd ignored until it was cold. The kid didn't seem to grasp the concept that she preferred cold tea, and he still didn't seem to understand that was why she ignored it most mornings. She didn't like her tea hot and she certainly didn't like it sweet.
By the time the afternoon rolled around, Demiyah had only moved one or two stacks of the paperwork she had to complete. The Kazekage found that she needed a break, so she ate a light lunch and then went out to the training field, instructing the shinobi that she worked closely with to stay back and keep working. She knew she wouldn't be gone long. She was simply itching to get out into the heavy desert air and train. When she arrived, she could tell that someone had been there before, but they were long gone by now. Figuring it was safe to train, she grabbed the bow off of her back, pulling out one of her normal arrows. Falling into the proper stance, she lifted the bow up to aim, drawing back on the string with the end of the arrow between her fingers. Her eyes fell onto one of the targets, pausing for only a split second before she released the arrow into the air.
Bulls-eye.
She was only able to release another three arrows before she felt someone approach the field. About to let a fifth arrow loose, she slowly let the string go slack, holding her bow toward the ground as she stood and waited. Thankfully he was on her right side and she didn't have to turn her head far to look at him. "I take it you were training here earlier today?" she asked without much thought to her words. She never did. Demiyah was always one to tell things how they were, even if it made her seem like a jerk. Taking in a slow breath, she looked back to her target, lifting her bow again and releasing the arrow, watching as it hit right next to the other four in the bulle-eye. "I can move down if you need me to," she noted absently, starting toward the target to grab her arrows, putting them all back into her quiver before turning to face the older jounin on the field. "I was actually hoping to meet one of my jounin here today, you know," she started, pausing and giving the man a chance to respond.

It appeared that of all people to join him out on the training grounds, it was the busiest person in the village - the Kazekage herself. Kazama hadn't anticipated seeing the Kazekage join him, alhough now that the young woman was here he wasn't entirely sure how to feel. He paused to let her speak as he approached, preferring to take a moment to organize his thoughts. Kazama wasn't the biggest fan of authority. For the last twelve to fourteen years of the last Kazekage's life Kazama had been a harsh, scathing critic of the way things in Sunagakure were being run. He thoroughly despised the way Sunagakure had essentially become Konohagakure's lapdog. People in Sunagakure went on missions that brought no direct benefit to Sunagakure simply so that the village could feed on the scraps Konohagakure gave out. Understandably, Kazama held a strong distaste for the position. Still, this was a relatively new Kazekage. When he had been passed over in favour of the young woman, Kazama had initially been incredulous. She was incredibly young to be nominated a Kage, nevermind being given the seat of power. Since then Kazama decided to watch and wait, wondering how exactly things would change under her tenure. Four years wasn't much time to judge by, however, so even now he wasn't too certain how to feel, now that he was actually speaking with her. "You'd be right. Don't bother moving, though - I'm hardly going to run in the path of your arrows," he remarked, perhaps a little more casually towards the Kage than most would dare. Being old as Kazama was brought out a certain self-confidence. As the young woman remarked how she had been hoping she would meet one of her Jounin, however, Kazama couldn't help but raise a brow. "Is that so?" he asked, curious. He could only wonder as to why the Kage would be so keen on meeting one of her Jounin during a training session. TAG: Dee. WORDS: I dunno. NOTES: Nothing.

Demiyah let another arrow loose as soon as she was back in position, burying it deeper into the target than she had the first few times. She released the breath she was holding in, lowering her bow once again and turning to look at her comrade. If there was one thing that Demiyah did, it was think she was above others just because of her rank. What she didn't have was the extensive experience that many of her older jounin held. To them, she knew, she was just a pup who was wet behind the ears. She had a lot to prove and she knew that the time was coming for her to prove herself to everyone. Her eyes remained on Kazama, and even though one eye was scarred and blinded, she could still hold someones gaze very well. It was an eerie quality of hers.
Wanting to give her next words a little thought, she moved back to the target again, pulling out the arrow with great force before slipping it back into her quiver once again. When she turned she looked thoughtful and contemplative, picking her words as carefully as she could, though tact was never her strong suit. "I want you to give me your opinion on a matter, Kazama. I'm seeking the council of all my jounin, if I'm going to be completely honest with you. I haven't done too much in my four years of being a Kazekage. The first three were filled with me trying to get my bearings and cleaning up the mess that the third left behind when he passed. You'd think that a Kage of his stature would have been more organized, but that wasn't the case. It's taken years of studying and organizing just to put the pieces of his puzzle together. Now that I finally think that I have everything in place, I feel that it might be time to start taking action," she started, crouching down slowly to pick up a small shard of glass she has spotted in the sand. Demiyah held it up toward the sky, letting the sunlight filter through it, looking thoughtful once more.
"I don't mean to belittle the last Kazekage, if you were loyal to him, Kazama. I'm finding that I need to see which jounin are completely loyal to me and hold my own ideals, if you will. Kane was a fool," Demiyah said strongly, standing up and suddenly drawing an arrow on her bow, twisting and face another target, and releasing the arrow in record time. She watched as it buried itself deep into the bullseye once again. "I'm not ashamed to say that he was a fool, either. That man thought he was doing what was right for our village, but he'd let it go on for far too long. He's left affairs of state in complete disarray and left the affairs within our village neglected. I want to change that. I'm not going to let Sunagakure remain in the shadow of Konoha. If we were meant to be shadows, we would live amongst the trees, Kazama. We wouldn't live in the sand where the sun is hot and the light shines on us from every angle. There's a reason we became one of the Great Shinobi Nations, and hiding in the shadows of the trees was not that reason," she said strongly, turning her head slightly to watch him once again. Demiyah looked him up and down with ease, running through everything that she knew about him. The records on every shinobi in the village were extensive. Kazama's was no different. She'd read through it in its entirety, leaving no excerpt unread.
Clearing her throat, the Kazekage finally turned to face him head on. "I want you to tell me what you thought of what the Third's reign, Kazama. When you're done, I want you to tell me what you would do were you in my position. If your thoughts are the same as mine, I need to know if I'll have your loyalty when the time comes."

Kazama raised a brow in mild surprise. He had good reasons for distrusting the position of Kazekage, but it seemed this young woman was a bit smarter than she seemed. It was easy to assume that someone so young would make for an ill-fitting Kage, but it appeared there was at least some merit to her promotion, if she was looking to seek the council of her Jounin. Her youth was obvious however in the fact that she needed to ask Kazama of his opinions. "If you wanted my opinions, I'm sure just about any other Jounin could tell you all you need to know about what I think of the last Kazekage," he remarked. He'd hardly been unsubtle in his criticisms of the last Kage, after all. "The man was a cowardly fool who thought turning us into Konoha's lapdog would be good for the village in the long run. I've spent nearly twenty years calling him out on it". He hadn't been exaggerating. Roughly around the age of thirty he'd stopped paying lip service to the Kazekage and started criticizing his policies. He'd kept it up for a good fourteen years before the old man finally kicked the bucket, at which point he decided to jump for the position of Kazekage. He'd lost it, obviously, to the young woman in front of him, although discovering her intentions weren't far off his own was certainly somewhat reassuring. "If I had to be honest? Cutting ties with someone who's essentially an ally may seem rash, but there's no reason for us to stay with Konoha if it doesn't benefit the village. Even if we don't sever our ties, our alliance with Konoha needs to change," the old man remarked, folding his arms in front of himself. "Of course, even if we turn independent, I suppose it's not all bad. Even if Konoha begins to see us as an enemy, they have a desert keeping them out of this village. The harsh terrain's a natural defense". Obviously severing an alliance or even re-negotiating their current alliance could have drastic impacts. Konoha had no doubt grown complacent with how Suna had been kept in servitude to them. They would be reluctant to simply hand back all that power to Suna. There was no telling the political knockback of such events. Still, Suna needed to change and become strong. They couldn't do that when they were still beneath the heels of another nation. TAG: Dee. The young Kazekage crossed her arms over her chest, her eyes narrowing at her jounin. If she'd wanted to know what the other jounin thought Kazama felt about the Third Kazekage, she would have asked them. Things ended up distorted when not inquired from the actual source. What she wanted to know was how he felt about him, and from his own lips. The look of slight irritation faded almost as quickly as it had appeared, the Kazekage reining in her temper momentarily. Clearing her throat, she gave a small sigh and then spoke, "If I wanted to hear about you from others, I would have. The purpose of me coming to you is to hear it from your own mouth, not someone elses. I'm not asking you just to hear myself talk. It's important that I hear what you think from you and you alone. No one else."
Demiyah paused to listen to him speak, however, a thoughtful expression remaining on her features throughout. She slung her bow back onto her shoulder, standing in silence, her hands cupped in front of her as she debated his words. She was silent for a long while, clearly deep in thought over this, taking her time in trying to process every word. Looking up at Kazama, she let a smirk form on her features, "How many shinobi in this village feel the same way that you do, Kazama?" Her fingers twined together as she tried to calculate in her mind how many shinobi were in the village and how many she had spoken to so far that held similar opinions to Kazama. Luckily for the Kazekage, there were quite a few who shared her views, and it made her rest a little easier.
"Cutting ties would be a last resort. My goal is to renegotiate what the Third Kazekage put into place with Konoha. I just really need to know that I have the backing of the village. As I understand it, morale is very low. It can't be that way. We're going to put ourselves deeper into this hole if we don't get out soon. Konoha's no longer beneficial to us, and we are strong enough to stand on our own. However, I won't risk war until we have proper allies on... other sides of the world," she noted, her hand pressed against her chin now, "It'd be suicide whether we have the desert to protect us or not. If they can't attack us, they'll starve us out if we're not careful," sighs, straightening up her posture and rolling her shoulders back. "Thank you for your wisdom, Kazama. I'd be nothing but ignorant if I didn't seek the council of the older shinobi. A good leader always looks to their peers. It's impossible to do everything on your own, after all."
Turning her head, she stared at the target she'd been shooting at before. "Kazama, how long has it been since you had a good sparring session?" Demiyah asked suddenly, her expression showing mild interest in the prospect of practicing with one of her best ninja.

Kazama remained stone-faced as the young woman remarked that if she wanted to hear about his opinions from someone else, she would've. She certainly had moxie, he'd give her that much. For someone so young she definitely seemed to be showing off a rather authoratitive streak. Of course, he wouldn't have respected her if she didn't. The position of Kage was a position of authority. He'd grown distrustful of authority, but having someone who actually seemed likely to do something was a nice change of pace. "I can't say I know for certain how many agree with all of my points, but I can make this clear," he spoke, folding his arms in front of his chest. "In all my years as a Shinobi, I can't say I've ever met someone who supported or even liked the Third Kazekage. Some of 'em probably held parties when they heard he'd kicked the bucket". There was no sympathty to be had for the man in Kazama's eyes. He'd failed the Land of Wind, he'd failed Sunagakure and he'd failed Kazama. It was astonishing the man could live for so long when he very clearly lacked a spine. Were it not for the fact that Kazama loved his homeland he might have even considered going rogue, simply because of the way the man ran the village. Turning his attention from the old Kazekage to the new Kazekage, however, he could not help but raise a brow in interest at the young woman's words. She certainly had thought about it a lot, it seemed. While he wouldn't have minded cutting ties with Konoha, keeping trade routes open was important. Sunagakure didn't possess a lot of natural resources. The village had been built on an oasis, but that oasis alone couldn't be expected to feed so many people now that Sunagakure had grown since its founding. But the Kazekage soon trailed off, changing the subject as she asked him just how long it had been since his last sparring match. "Probably far too long, at this stage," he responded, uncrossing his arms as he smirked. Kazama never did lose the competitive streak he'd gained back when he was a young lad. "But I'm not so out of practice I couldn't give a fledgling a run for her money". TAG: Dee. WORDS: I dunno. NOTES: Nothing.

"Fledgling, huh?" she asked with an amused expression, "Need I remind you who this 'fledgling' is in this village?" she taunted him, showing a slight playful side that rarely came out. Demiyah wasn't one for games, unless you counted shogi and go. No. Logic games weren't games that filled her with joy or excitement. They were games that made her think her choices through and come to a definite conclusion before taking action. The logic was the same for actions to be taken about the village and their various relationships with the other lands. If she thought everything through and played her pieces right, then everything would fall neatly in it's place and Demiyah would be able to consider herself successful in each of her endeavors.
Maybe a sparring match with one of her own jounin wouldn't be such a bad idea. It gave Demiyah the chance to test her own skills against her own, and Kazama the chance to prove himself as a capable shinobi. Besides, Demiyah liked to spar. It was much better than sitting in the office and working on paperwork. When she was done here, she'd go back and work well into the night. That's how it went with her, early up, late to bed. Hopefully that training like this would tire her out and she'd be able to sleep without the nightmares. It was unlikely, but she could always dream.
Shifting her weight slightly, Demiyah crossed her arms over her chest with an interested expression now. "You seem so confident that I'm green, Kazama. Would you like to test that theory?" she asked, glancing up toward the sky. "I'd say that I have an hour or two to spare. If you can keep up, that is, old man," the Kazekage taunted lightheartedly. If he was gonna call her a fledgling, she was going to point out his age. That's just how Demiyah was. This was one of the times where her mind communicated with her tongue before she could reign herself in.
Demiyah wouldn't be an easy opponent to fight. There was a reason she was the Kazekage, after all. It wasn't all because of her intelligence or intuition in battle. It was because she was strong and she knew it. She knew her strengths and she knew her weaknesses. It wasn't difficult for her to utilize both in battle, much less a small sparring mach with one of her own jounin. She had to admit that she was rather curious as to the jounin's skills. Piece of paper only told so much. If you wanted to know everything, then you had to get down and dirty yourself. Seeing that there was no turning back now, Demiyah took a few steps backward. "You wouldn't turn down the Kazekage, now, would you?"
