Himawari Hirameku say, do you suppose it's too late for me?
ALIAS chisana hotaru | GENDER female | AGE fifteen | ZODIAC aquarius | ORIENTATION heteroflexible | BLOOD TYPE O- |
VILLAGE kirigakure | RANK genin | CHAKRA AFFINITY raiton | PRIMARY STYLE bukijutsu | CHAKRA COLOUR yellow | KEKKEI GENKAI hotarubi |
Failing to reach five feet, Himawari lives up to her sobriquet of Chisana Hotaru—Little Firefly. Both her short stature, pale skin and blue eyes serve as a prominent reminder of her bastard-born parentage, as she lacks the yellow firefly glow of the Hirameku eyes and their tall, tan and lanky frames. The only traits she does happen to share with the rest of the Hirameku family would be the white hair and the Lichtenberg figures littering her body and the temples of her face. (She was more scar than skin.) Though, even those would have never come to without her service as a walking lightning rod. Her prolonged exposure to electricity had bleached her once sunflower blonde hair to a shock white shade. Despite the fact that puberty is a cruel mistress, Himawari was not blessed with too feminine curves, resolving for a lithe and lean figure that was unsurprising for a shinobi.
The metal plate marking her as a ninja of Kirigakure was removed from its initial blue cloth and placed onto the black ribbon, given to Himawari by her mother as a momento, now tied securely into her short hair. She’s often clad in simple short yukata or komon kimono of varying shades, though Himawari does seem to favour green and yellows. Her black sandals reach to calves, with black leggings covering her legs up to her thighs, where the exposed skin there, is covered with bandages. After she was deemed old enough to begin official training of the Hotarubi, Himawari began to wrap any bare skin and more due to her distaste of the lightning scars left behind by the utilisation of lightning. Across her lower back is are two scabbards, holding her wakazashi and katana. All weapons are decorated by the same spiderweb-esque scars that stereotypically over the skin of Hotarubi users; a signifier of the extensive involvement of kenjutsu among the family’s fighting style. |
There has never been anything truly remarkable or particularly striking about her. There are occasions when she is capable of substituting for a lighthouse, but Himawari is by no means a ray of sunshine. Not to say she’s a harsh monsoon, either. Rather, Hirameku Himawari would be more accurately described as a gloomy morning; it wasn’t raining, but the sky was far too grey to call it good weather. It’s ironic for someone so bright in a literal sense to actually be quite dull.
Her pattern of speech is normally polite and formal, as if everyone were a stranger and meant to be kept at a distance, but the monotony of her voice is a signifier that it is merely out of obligation and not sincerity. She does not raise her voice and tends to mumble more to herself than to actually speak to others, even when involved in conversation. She is not charismatic with her dry humour and sarcastic witticisms, and although Himawari takes time choosing her words before she speaks, as her mind spews out words faster than she can process, she is still not the most eloquent in conveying her thoughts. Which usually revolve around the same theme of some sort of nihilistic cynicism.
In the moments when she does become flustered, she tends to actually ramble before the anxiety wears off and the mental self-immolation begins and she opts to disappear in her usual lightning speed, equating to one of her more frustrating traits of being an avoidant. Once or twice, Himawari had expressed her desire to follow rather than lead, rarely putting up a fuss when given an order or instruction and consistently acquiesces to most plans so long as they weren’t completely stupid. At first her family was pleased with her disciplined nature, but eventually grew displeased when they realised that Himawari was not in fact obedient, but apathetic and borderline spineless.
It’s safe to say that she actually enjoys the prospect of being considered a tool as a shinobi.
(At least then, Himawari has a purpose.)
Her relaxed, almost lethargic demeanour juxtaposes her expeditious, relentless combat. During the pressures of battle, Himawari can actually be quite calculating and analytical as she is in a better state to absorb her mind’s observations. That is, if you catch her to spar at the right time, on the right day, in a good week. If not, she’s half-hearted at most with a selective attention. The panic and anxiety that comes with combat seems to be the only way to get Himawari to move, as it triggers the instinctive fight or flight response, so to speak.
She was once a hardworking child, intrinsically motivated to be a better kunoichi but as time passed and due to certain circumstances, she eventually fell into a state of indifference, manifesting in emotional ineptitude. Now, she tends to train and follow orders to follow the motions. Striving neither to be the best, nor allowing herself to be the worst. The increasing strain and pressure placed upon her after being declared heir presumptive has made her bitter towards the Clan, though not yet enough to abandon her duty.

It was almost satirical that she was born on the first summer night the fireflies came out to play. The blood of her father ran through her veins and it showed through the voltages emitting from her skin, but she had her mother’s blue eyes and yellow hair.
(She was a Hirameku, but not quite.)
For the first thirteen years of her life, she was known as Himawari Kanesaka for the sunflowers that her mother loved and for the father that was not there. After her birth and the identity of Hideaki Hirameku’s mistress was thus revealed, Haruko Hirameku made the scornful proclamation to ban both Yua Kanesaka and Himawari Kanesaka to ever step foot within the confines of the land the Hirameku owned. Her patience had been tested enough when Hirameku, sworn to secrecy, were used to look after Yua during her pregnancy and labour. Hideaki was too embarrassed by the controversy of his affair to say otherwise. Thus, Himawari was raised under the tutelage of her civilian mother, Yua, and the brother-in-law of her father was assigned to oversee her training of the Hotarubi. Naturally, Haruko had gone against the training of Himawari—“let the whore be killed by her filth-born”—but the Elders themselves demanded otherwise, forcing them to reach the compromise of Haruki Hirameku to be her teacher.
He did not treat her with the same contempt as his sister, though his tone was curt to her mother whenever they would converse. When Himawari asked Haruki of her father—because her mother only shook her head and sighed—he answered with a short sequence of unkind words. At the age of four, she quickly realised Haruki had become her second father; not even her own mother, with her heart so full of love, could lift Himawari up with eyes lacking fear and doubt of being hurt. Like most children born with the Hotarubi, Himawari managed to control her voltages by the age of five and although Haruki Hirameku was freed from his contract, he continued to see the girl afterwards.
(One night before falling asleep, Himawari told her mother that Uncle Haruki was the sun that helped her grow. Yua only responded with a strained, knowing smile and kissed her daughter’s forehead.)
Himawari was seven when she accidentally called Haruki father. He did not come back the next day to continue her training and kenjutsu. The wooden tanto he had given her for her birthday was packed in a box and placed in the closet to be forgotten.
(“Whatever,” she said, hiding her crying eyes from her mother, “I don’t care.”)
Thinking back at it now, Himawari almost found a third father in her first sensei at the Shinobi Academy. He would yell at her when she got into fights with other students—she was short, dammit, but she was allowed to be—but would then stay after school to offer her extra help with chakra control. However, Haruyuki was one syllable off Haruki and when the moment that blasted word made its way to the tip of her tongue, Himawari decided to sit in the corner of the classroom and sleep instead. Haruyuki noticed, but said nothing and continued on. He failed Himawari just as she failed him.
On the coldest day of that winter, Yua fell asleep and did not wake up. Himawari saw Hideaki Hirameku for the first time in her life and trailed behind him after they had buried her mother. The only words that come out of Haruko’s mouth are poison, but Himawari became a Hirameku on her thirteenth birthday. She was not fooled though, because she never saw Haruki around the compound except for mandatory family dinners and events. Hikaru and Hikari were welcoming of their half sibling, but were often in conflict because their mother’s pain.
(She was a Hirameku, but not quite.)
When she passed the Genin exam and received her hitai-ate, Himawari only had Old Lady Youko, a Clan Elder—and secretly, she once whispered to the smaller girl’s ear, only half lightning and half fire and that no one knew—to show her accomplishment. Old Lady Youko was the kindest out of all of them, but Himawari was now old enough to know that she only had one mother and had no need for fathers anymore, so she only calls the old woman Youko-sama and offers fond smiles at the most.
On the day following Hikaru’s funeral, Hideaki pulled both Hikari and Himawari to the Council Room, already filled with the Clan Elders and higher ranked members arguing over the empty seat that Hikaru left behind. When the gathering fell into anarchy, before it was officially called to order, at two Hirameku members engaging in combat, Old Lady Youko shot Himawari a concerned frown while young Hikari only grasped her half-sibling’s hand to her right.
Oh, Himawari had thought with a grimace, let the good times roll.
