A dark silhouette dashed through the gray landscape, leaping from rock to rock at a maddening pace. Hara Kin was hot on the trail of a Jounin who had escaped from Konoha with some highly confidential documents. The mission was simple. Catch up to the traitor, retrieve the scroll and perhaps deal some sweet vengeance. However, the time was running short. She absolutely couldn’t let the target cross the border to the Land of Iron. Though not because of safety reasons, no... But because the Land of Iron was so freakin’ cold! She wasn’t all that close yet and already the chilly weather was making her shiver. And having to fight in the snow... Noooo thank you.
Luckily, the shortcut had bought Hara just enough time. She spotted a familiar sight down the path and picked up the pace. Leaping over the dark-haired kunoichi, she landed right on her way and waved. However, the traitor only responded with a jump kick. The trickster dodged the initial hit and blocked the follow-up swipes. Feigning an arm injury, she managed to throw the opponent off-guard and suddenly lunged forward, planting her knee deep into the opponent’s gut. However, her enemy retaliated with an underhanded strike right into her chin. After a brief pause, the fighters seemed to get the same idea for the opening. Leaping up, they aimed perfectly simultaneous spin kicks at each other. The impact sent both combatants skidding backwards an equal distance.
While they regained their footing and breath, Hara wagged her finger teasingly. "Oh wow, is that any way to greet an old friend?" Indeed, they some had history together. Most of the fellow Jounin saw the Kitsune as a nuisance, but not this woman. What she had shared with her had been something special. They had been friends, equal friends, something she hadn’t managed to achieve with Ryoko or even the previous Hokage. With the leaders, there was always the whole Boss - Subordinate thing to consider. Getting too close and personal would make things awkward, not to mention the collective hissy fit the whole village would throw because of it.
Unfortunately, the enemy didn’t share the sentiment. No, the woman just laughed and spat. "How naïve are you, Hara?" Assuming a ready stance, she shook her head and laced her tone with utter contempt. "We were never really friends. Knowing that you always collected information on others, I just pretended to care. I wanted to get something useful out of you, but you never stopped with the stupid stories, so I had to take care of things myself." Hara opened her mouth to answer, but for the moment she couldn’t find the right words. As much as she wanted to deny it, she knew spies were never honest. Oh, she knew that better than anyone...
It was kind of funny actually.
The Kitsune regained her cheery smile. "I see. Hee, then I guess I don’t need to feel bad about beating some sense into you." She performed a quick set of hand seals and crackling electricity covered her limbs. With quick practice jabs, she taunted her opponent, daring her to make the first move. "Don’t worry though~ I have no reason to kill you~" That’s all it took to start the round two. The traitor charged with a kunai ready. Each swift slash came with the intention to kill. It took all of Hara’s swiftness to just keep dodging. She threw out a jab at every opportunity, but even with her jutsu active, she was forced to go defensive. Catching a blade with her forearm was not in the battle plan.
Hara had to think quickly. Spinning around with a low, sweeping kick, she forced her opponent to back off. It gave a window for hand seals and an eye contact. Before the traitor could react, she froze right on her tracks. The paralyzing effect was short, a mere second, but it was still enough. Springing forward, the Kitsune landed another cheap shot, an uppercut charged with her raiton chakra. The enemy recoiled with a broken curse. Words alone couldn’t describe how satisfying it felt, but the trickster’s mad smile spoke volumes.
However, the traitor was a quick one as well. Without wasting a beat, she threw her kunai. Hara was too caught up in the moment to avoid the attack and it sank right into her bare foot. While she flinched, the enemy shook off the numbing effects of the jutsu and retaliated violently. A powerful kick sent the trickster tumbling back. It was followed by more thrown weapons, each aimed expertly at the vital spots. Her eyes, throat and heart were impaled within moments. Or so it had seemed, until the wounded woman turned into a rock in a puff of smoke. Hara had taken shelter behind a large boulder, trying to nurse her bleeding leg. She silently blamed the fatigue from the chase keeping her down. Otherwise she would’ve dodged that first kunai as well.
Meanwhile, the irritated opponent had just experienced the famous last straw.
Leaping high into the air, the traitor screamed. "Just die already, you damn Kitsune!" She took a deep breath while performing a distinct chain of hand seals. Hara’s eyes widened as she recognized the pattern. Fire. Why did it always have to be fire? She could barely finish the thought when her opponent spat out the single biggest fireball she had ever seen. If she hadn’t been in such a hurry to think of something, she would’ve made a joke about an obvious overkill. No time for that, sadly. After hasty hand seals, she slammed her hands against the ground and... Fwhoom! The fireball hit the ground and went off like a massive bomb, sending out a scorching shockwave that burned away all remnants of plant life.
Once the dust settled, the traitor swept a cold glare across the charred battlefield. Most would’ve concluded the enemy had been consumed by the flames, but this woman knew the Kitsune too well. The trickster was just biding her time, waiting for an opening... Exactly so, the ground erupted at the jounin’s feet and the ash-covered trickster popped out. The traitor leapt back barely in time to avoid it. "Missed me!" Hara only flashed an eerie smile. "Did I?" Her hands were already held in the final seal of a certain, traditional Konohagakure genjutsu. It was far too late to do anything now. She vanished in a swirl of leaves and suddenly a thick tree grew from the ground, binding the target in place.
Game over.
Hara emerged from the tree trunk and reached down to rifle through the woman’s pockets. The scroll was finally hers. "I’ll be taking that. Yoink~" Jumping out of the tree, she spun to face the defeated traitor who avoided her gaze. However, when the trickster pulled out a kunai, the jounin finally spoke up nervously. "But... you said you have no reason to kill me..." The Kitsune glanced at the blade and laughed, briefly, quietly. When she sighed and lifted her head, her usual smile was gone. "And you believed me... Just like I believed I had finally gained a real friend." A streak of red splattered onto the ground, the genjutsu faded and the lifeless target collapsed.
Once again, Hara Kin was all alone.
