SEI SIND DAS ESSEN UND WIR SIND DIE jager Waiting for people in a non-mission setting tended to be an alien idea for Mayu. After many years of saying 'screw you guys, I'm doing it myself', you get used to not waiting for anybody to accompany you. The only time she actually waited on people like that was when she was assigned group missions, and even then, an air of professionalism must be kept. Of course, she knew exactly why this was happening. The Chuunin Exams were coming up, and she'd gotten professional help from a Jonin in her training. 'I suppose I should be thankful for the help, yet...' Mayu trailed off in her thoughts, remembering the brief summary that was given to her of who she was with now. '...that amount of usefulness will take some getting used to.' Especially since they were actually willing to help her. God, the last sensei was completely apathetic to her and focused more on the two bickering teammates. So having somebody work full-time with her... she hasn't had that since the Academy, at least. So here she was, waiting awkwardly on a tree stump in the given training ground, wondering what to do. 'I suppose I can't scare him like other people, common courtesy not to do so to your superiors. How do I even introduce myself?' Mayu thought on it for a while. 'Well, he's giving me proper, unbiased help. I suppose that I should act courteous and professional, then, given that I don't know this man well enough.' It was settled then, she would simply treat him with all due respect. If he acted like he deserved none... well then, that's not a good Jonin, now is it? She folded her hands in her lap, not really surprised by the wait. She had come fifteen minutes early, not knowing what type of teaching method the Jonin had. He could be a drill instructor who advised such, or a person who's quite punctual with his time. Honestly, she preferred the latter, as it normally gave off the air of a gentleman. But she wouldn't mind the former, either. Cutting off her muse, she waited attentively for her instructor, keeping a neutrally polite Genin face. No need to look cocky, after all. Tag: Ronin

Ronin stared quietly at his sketch pad, precariously perched up in a tree that overlooked the training grounds that Ronin had instructed his new student to meet him in. He'd been there since early in the morning, training his own body before he helped with Mayu's training later in the morning. After practicing for quite some time, he'd settled down and had eaten his breakfast, which he'd made at about 4am before he'd left his tiny apartment. Once he'd eaten a proper meal, he'd pulled himself up into this tree to rest a bit, working in his sketchbook as he waited for the time to pass. Glancing up toward the sky, he noted that it was almost time to meet with his new student, though he didn't make a move to jump down into the training grounds.
Lifting an eyebrow, he watched as the young genin wandered onto the training field and settled herself onto a tree stump, seemingly lost in her own thoughts. He didn't disturb her at first, focusing more on his drawing than her for the last few minutes of his break. Once he'd finally finished the part of his drawing he'd been focusing the most on, he brought his gaze back to Mayu, grey eyes observing her silently. Being early was a good thing. Ronin liked to see genin with enough initiative and ambition that they showed up before they were even supposed to. Shifting slowly, Ronin cleared his throat, watching the genin from his perch in the tree close to where she was settled.
"You're early," he noted simply, slowly closing up his sketch pad and throwing both it and the pencil he'd been working with back into his pack. He let his pack remain in the tree, jumping down and landing easily on both feet. He didn't stagger and he didn't say. He was completely steady in his movements as he stepped forward to stand in front of Mayu. "I'm Ronin, you teacher for this chuunin exams training, as well as your new sensei for your genin team," he said calmly. "Your last sensei had to take a leave of absence, unfortunately," he noted lightly, though he didn't smile or show much emotion at all.
Placing both of his hands against the hilts of his two long blades, he glanced behind them. "I'm not one for wasting time, so how about we get started as soon as possible. I want you to tell me what you think you need to progress on most, considering the other genin that you work with and all that you've heard about the other village's shinobi. Where do you want to start? This is your training, after all. I'm here to make sure that you excel in whatever you need practice in."

SEI SIND DAS ESSEN UND WIR SIND DIE jager A throat was cleared, and her eyes instinctively trailed the origin of the sound. It was... her jonin instructor. She stood from her seat at attention, keeping her eyes on him as he jumped from his area on the tree. The man was sturdy in what he did and how he moved. 'He knows what he's doing.' Was the first thought that came to Mayu's mind. She placed her hands to her sides and gave a courteous bow as he made his way to stand in front of her, her face a mix of respect and gratefulness. Made sense, as she had a good amount of both so far. He introduced himself as Ronin and reiterated what his job was, as well as the circumstances that lead to his attendance. Ah, he was also a professional type of person. It wouldn't do her good to have any air of disrespect around him, and would be highly risky until she got to know him more. Playing it safe, she replied to his inquiry of where she wished to start training. "Thank you for your time, Ronin-sensei." She addressed him politely before pausing for a split second to consider her words. It would be fairly late into the conversation to introduce herself by name, so Mayu decided against it. Her voice became slightly more solid as she explained her current weakness that she needed to cover. "I believe I need training in direct combat. I have found that my performance in face-to-face combat is substantially lower than others due to an over-specialization in stealth and assassination tactics." She blinked as she continued explaining. "It could cripple me, especially if the Exams decides to use anything ranging from a tournament setting to simply open ground. My only out is the Kirigakure no Jutsu, and that can be easily dispersed." Tag: Ronin

'A genin using assassination tactics? Just who is this kid?' Ronin thought, though his features remained void of any emotion, making him seem rather bored. In all honesty, he was intrigued. He enjoyed training others, it gave him a great sense of self and purpose when he could see someone benefiting from his tutelage. He hoped that he could help this young woman in her training so that she could start moving up in the ranks. The chuunin exams were a big thing in life. Ronin's had been one of the most important events in his life. At the time, he'd been seeking the approval of his father and his siblings by showing the skills that he'd acquired over his years training. He'd lost his final match, but he'd still made it to chuunin. After all, not everyone was going to win every match.
"I suppose that I should say that there usually is a tournament setting in the exams. Generally it's the last test that you have to go through. Even if you lose, however, you still have great potential to move onto chuunin rank as long as you can prove your skills and that you're worth the risk. There will be quite a few people there, including dignitaries from around the world, and many of the villages organizations. Depending on your skills, many different clients and organizations will be vying for you to work for them. Of course, all transactions are funneled through the village first," he explained calmly, not finding the need to really hide anything. He knew that the chuunin exams tended to be rather tight lipped when it came to the tests, but year after year, the tournament was usually the only part that remained the same. "However, Mayu," he started with a smirk now, making him look a little intimidating, "this will stay between just you and I, got that?"
Crossing his arms over his chest, Ronin watched his student carefully. He observed the tiny movements, the way that her eyes moved, her facial features. Everything. A skill he used in both battle and when it came to art, it was almost second nature to observe his would be opponent before truly starting to battle. "I can help with close combat," he noted calmly, rolling his shoulders back. "Do you have any knowledge of taijutsu attacks that aren't assassination techniques, Mayu?" was his first question, and it was key to where he was to start with her training.

SEI SIND DAS ESSEN UND WIR SIND DIE jager So there was going to be a tournament setting, for political and relational purposes. The information would be vital, given that it allowed her to train accordingly and in preparation. It was also rather secretive information, apparently, as the planning of the exams weren't supposed to be announced at all. When asked to keep the information to herself, Mayu replied with a crisp "Yes, sensei.", not conveying much emotion other than complete professionalism. Still, he addressed her informally. 'Mayu', not 'Nagato-san' or any other title. She felt... unnerved, at that. Granted, she had a certain fearful respect of this man; she always has that respect for her superiors, knowing they could probably end her whenever she wanted. But that fear became somewhat more apparent when he addressed her like that. He made use and was aware of his higher ranking, and it allowed him to treat her in that amiable air. This also meant both were aware of the amount of control he could exercise over her. The only other possibility was that he was attempting to be friendly with her, and she still had her doubts as to if a standing relation could be established that soon. Mayu showed little outward signs of her nervousness and wariness, but inside, she was trying to keep herself together from stepping backwards in polite intimidation. When asked about her direct taijutsu capabilities, Mayu hesitated, trying to think of what the hell she had. the Muon Kosatsu and Hoshoku Tosshin were a subduing technique and a surprise technique, respectively. Both went under assassination, and were barely if ever used for direct combat. It was... sad. Really bad. She was hilariously outgunned in that area, but there was nothing that could be done. Blinking once more, she stood at attention as she answered in all honesty. "...None, sensei. I have the basic Academy taijutsu, as well as a more adept variation, but otherwise, my only Taijutsu techniques are assassination techniques." Her mouth went into a slight frown, and she cursed herself for showing such embarrassment and allowing humiliation to show outwardly. Tag: Ronin

The first thing out of Ronin's mouth was an order, but also a good piece of advice. He could see how upset Mayu was about only having assassination and academy taijutsu, and he wasn't going to stand for that. Crossing his arms over his chest, he lifted an eyebrow slowly. "Mayu-san," he started calmly, tapping his fingers along his arm, "Never apologize for the skills that you've decided to focus on. Embrace the skills that you have and never feel like you're less than another because you don't have the same skills. You chose to specialize in assassination techniques. We can work with what you have and turn those techniques into deadly frontal assaults. Your style is unique. Don't apologize for that. Ever."
With that out of the way, he glanced back toward their training area and the wide open space that they had to work with. It would do, of course. As long as her techniques weren't devastating and destructive. However, if she specialized with assassination techniques, a wide open space probably wasn't going to be the best place for her to practice. On the other hand, the tournament setting was often wide open like this with very little cover for hiding ones self. You were forced to fight head on with your opponent. First things first, though, Ronin needed to see Mayu's techniques for himself before he could properly assess how to turn them from purely assassination techniques to versatile and interchangeable taijutsu.
"I think we should start with you showing me exactly what your assassination techniques do. I want you to try them on me, though, of course, you need to refrain from killing me. After you show me each technique at least once, I want you to keep coming after me with them. I'll be reacting and fighting back, though. Before I help you too much, I want you to use your own mind and try to figure out your own way to enhance your techniques," he said lightly, still looking out at the field as he spoke. He was running a few different plans and ideas through his mind, taking into consideration Mayu's temperament, height, weight, potential speed. Everything was clicking into place for him and he was preparing himself for the training he was about to put this young woman through.
He said nothing else as he stepped out into the middle of the field, turning to face Mayu with a complacent look. However, as he watched her, light grey eyes slowly turned bright green, a two thin black rings rotating around a solid black pupil. He was going to keep track of her every movement this way. He wanted to gauge how fast she could perform her attacks, and potentially get her working faster. Even if she couldn't enhance her techniques for frontal combat, if she had the extreme speed of an assassin, she wouldn't need to and the battle would be over before it had even begun once she was out in the field.

SEI SIND DAS ESSEN UND WIR SIND DIE jager Attempt to attack him? The first thought she had was 'I'm screwed.' The second assessed his words, and took into account the reasoning behind it. The third thought went into her surroundings. Open ground, therefore she couldn't afford any stealth strategies, and Kirigakure no Jutsu was useless against him. He's shorter than her, therefore she could use one of her more situational techniques. Also, he was a Jonin of how many years and had been through much more than her. The fourth thought she had was 'I'm screwed in an educational manner. Great.' As he made his stance farther away from her, she assessed the possible uses of her techniques in an open area. Bunshin for confusion, Kawarimi for safety. Shunshin for utility, Kanashibari and Hoshoku for aggression. Mizu Bunshin for greater utility and Muon Kosatsu for that last step to victory. If anything, her skill set seemed like an extremely watered down version of a hunter-nin... that would do. It wasn't the best strategy, but it was what she was working with at the moment. Mayu kept her eyes on him and slowly started to circle around the Jonin, still observing. 'But still, how to initially approach him... He's smart enough not to come after me. Given this is an educational exhibition, I'll be going after him first.' But how... looking through her basic tactics, she found a suitable one that would at least give her a bit of momentum to start. 'Alright. Afterwards seems like improvisation, then.' Mayu blinked once, and kept the steady beat of her feet on the ground, not letting any sign of aggression quite yet. 'And here... we... go.' Suddenly, her hands whipped into a tiger seal, and a Mizu Bunshin appeared at her right. Her pace quickened exponentially, careful steps becoming extreme sprints as both her and her clone made to flank Ronin on his left and right. It didn't really matter that he knew which was which; honestly, all that mattered was there was another temporary physical copy of her that he'd have to exert effort to block. Mayu ran through her possible actions. 'I suppose this is an exhibition fight. Then, let's start off flashy, shall we?' With that, Mayu flicked her arm, and a kunai flashed from up her sleeve and into her waiting palm. Initiating combat, the Genin blasted chakra into her veins using the Hoshoku Tosshin, her muscles becoming more potent as she lunged towards Ronin in an attempt to slash horizontally across his stomach. Her water clone followed suit with it's own Hoshoku Tosshin, but instead aimed a sweeping kick for his legs to initiate the Muon Kosatsu. He'll probably block both, but momentum was essential in the beginning, even if the initial advancement fails. OOC: Mizu Bunshin to flank him left and right, then both go into Hoshoku Tosshin and rush in. Mayu's trying to cut him, clone's trying to take out his legs. Tag: Ronin

Ronin's now piercing green eyes remained on his student, taking in her every movement. Good. He had her thinking. If she'd simply rushed in without any thought, he'd have incapacitated her before she'd even gotten close to him. However, this also meant she knew how to use her own techniques to her advantage, even in a flat and open location such as this one. Pride. That's what he was feeling right then. She was smart and intuitive, he had to give her at least that much. However, he wouldn't just let her hit him if that was her aim. His doujutsu wouldn't let him just do nothing. It always came as a reflex.
Keeping watch on his now running student, the itching in the back of his mind started as soon as she created her water clone and gave herself a boost of speed in his direction. 'Good,' he noted to himself, his hand moving quickly to pull one of his daggers from the harness under his jacket. He ducked down into a crouch, throwing his hand up and lodging the split blade against Nagato's kunai as soon as she got close enough. Using the two pronged dagger, he twisted his hand, pulling the kunai from Mayu's grasp and throwing it downward and back behind him to the water clone at his back, aiming to destroy it. His free hand shot up and grasped Nagato's arm, a small smirk on his features. "You're good, I'll give you that, Mayu," he said calmly, letting her go and stepping back, sheathing his dagger without a second thought. He then pushed himself to his feet once more, eerie green eyes watching her.
"This may seem odd, but I want you to sit back and watch how you move this time, alright? Can you create a clone and a water clone?" Ronin asked calmly, his hands already in the midst of forming hand seals. Next to him, a jet black flock of crows appeared out of nowhere, spinning and twisting until they formed into a perfect clone of Ronin himself. "Have your clone attack mine from the front like you just did to me, and your water clone attack from behind. Knowing how you yourself move is one of the most important things to keep in mind when trying to re-purpose your jutsu, especially if you're used to working in a certain way. Forcing yourself to stand back and watch yourself gives you a little more insight. It's not a technique that very many jounin like to utilize, but I think it will be worthwhile for this exercise, especially since clones always move in the same way that you do," he said calmly, motioning for Nagato to follow him in taking a few steps back to watch from afar.
Usually, Ronin wasn't this nice to people. His students were the only ones who were sparred from his coldness and cruelty, though even then, he couldn't help but keep them at arms length. During training, missions, or battle, he would talk quite a bit. Get him alone and not be in a training setting, however, and you could expect little from him by the way of words. Right now, he simply wanted to help the girl succeed and protect herself in the coming exams. Sometimes it could be a matter of life and death. He wished life for her and all those he taught, though it wasn't anything that he would outright admit. | |
