Masaki waited in the mission room for his comrade to show, his ankles crossed in an almost effeminate manner as he sat in the metal chair. Normally A-ranked missions required a team of jounin enlisting three abled ninjas, but that would not be the case for today. Iwagakure’s higher ranked shinobi were stretched thin with the village’s revival in activity since the new Kage, someone whom Masaki personally admired, had been named. Because of that, Masaki found himself facing this mission with only one other partner, not two, yet even that was an improvement from his last few solo missions where he had been alone. Those missions were manageable, a way for the man to push himself and his newer jutsus, but they were rough on his body and mind. It made Masaki starved for company and eager to start this one as soon as he read the mission documents stating the other jounin’s name.
Kensaku Kanada .
There was quite a bit about Kensaku that reminded Masaki of a slightly younger, less tortured version of himself. And the brunette meant that in the best way possible- he quite respected Kensaku for their shared intelligence and analytical minds. Kensaku’s spider puppet as well, there was that, and while Masaki had never shared it publically, not even to the Kage, he too had been training with spiders, flesh and blood ones that is. Yet, above all of this, was the way the two men fought together. The long distance abilities of Kensaku’s puppet jutsu allowed for Masaki to get in close with his Taijutsu and KKG. They complimented each other with their only limitation being that they both planned ahead, perhaps too slowly against faster paced adversaries. As if you could call being patient a downfall.
Humming slightly to himself as his thoughts wandered between the mission and Kensaku, Masaki returned to the crossword puzzle in front of him. It was a simple way for this jounin, who was often labeled erudite as much as he was pretentious, to pass the time. Masaki tapped the butt of his pencil against the table, scanning the suggestions. The clan of the Kazekage- seven letters. Akiyama. Falling below the first letter of that hint came: Classic tale entitled “The BLANK of Shiro Finn”. Adventures. And continuing down from the last letter of that: Other word for ninja- seven letters. Shinobi.
He wasn’t even trying now.
Maybe he should move onto the little number game each newspaper held as those Masaki found more challenging anyways, but he wasn’t quite in the mood for figures. Masaki tapped the pencil again, a short burst of rhythm from the raps, before he relinquished his search for entertainment and placed the pencil back into a cup in the middle of the table. He did like that about the mission room, the free pencils and pens in that clay cup, it made things just a tad bit easier for spontaneous puzzle doing.
Kensaku liked puzzles. Speaking of the “Villain in Glasses”, where was he? Standing up from his chair, Masaki reached for the newspaper and folded it away into the trash, crossword abandoned. The other man wasn’t late, though, there were still fifteen minutes till their assigned meeting time, Masaki noticed after glancing briefly at the clock.
Who knew, maybe he’d show up early.

murder with no killing | Kensaku Kanada had a mission. It'd been a while since a mission had been handed down to him, despite his being a Jounin. Iwagakure was focusing a lot on the Chunin exams, and the fact that Kenny lacked a team meant he hadn't had as many chances to go out and stretch his legs. Not that he resented the chance to relax a little, but he needed money to eat. Kensaku had abandoned his typical blue coat for his dark green armored vest, wearing pants that were a shade of earthy brown that could blend in with both a dark forest and a cave system. Knives and shuriken were hidden on his person, easily accessible to him but not obvious to others, and he carried a scroll attached to his belt. If an enemy asked him which was more dangerous, he'd say the knives, and he'd be lying. That scroll had a puppet in it, a spider of steel and wire. Humanoid puppets were just so cliche. If there had to be one person he'd work with, Kenny mused, Masaki was probably his first choice. Close combat specialists were his favorite, from an objective standpoint, and the two of them would probably be able to come up with a really good plan. It was nice, working with someone else who had a brain. Kenny walked into the mission room to see Masaki throwing a newspaper, folded open to the crossword and partially marked up, into the trash. The other ninja was placing a pen in the cup, and the clock showed that they had 15 minutes before he was supposed to be there. The crossword wasn't done, so... "Puzzle's too easy today, Masaki?" |

Masaki glanced over to his companion as he smiled back at the man. “I about fell asleep doing it, Kensaku,” he chuckled slightly, taking a step to meet the younger jounin. “They’re not even trying lately. I might have to request the newsstand to bring in puzzles from other villages if this quality continues.” Masaki shrugged, reaching down for his pack as he jimmied it onto his back. He wouldn’t normally carry around his traveling pack for a short term mission, but the bag held all of his medical equipment and, if the heiress was injured, then he would need it. As far as Masaki was aware of, Kensaku also specialized in medicine so they would be well covered in that field. Again, it was another feature that complimented the pair.
“And I see you’re actually wearing the uniform today,” the brunette mused, aware of Kensaku’s habit of wearing his own clothing rather than the jounin’s vest. Personally, Masaki stuck to his khaki colored pants (able to blend in just as well as darker colors, especially when combined with his vines), green collared shirt, and jounin vest. He kept his forehead protector like Kensaku’s- on his forehead with the right side of his hair falling over the green band longer than the left. His monocle, of course, was pocketed away unless he needed it.
Pulling out the mission details, Masaki extended them out to his companion incase the other man wanted to take another look. “I assume you know the mission objectives well by now but I think we should travel to Kawa no Kuni and survey the area for the hideout and then pinpoint the best way to attack and retrieve the target,” Masaki advised. “I have the medical itemsto keep Kyoko, the Clan’s heiress, alive if she’s injured at all.”
“Other than that is there anything else you want to cover before we head out?”
313 {Spoiler}Next post will probably be longer (don't normally write them this short) but I'm waiting for Kensaku's response to Masaki's question haha. But feel free to skip it to them in the area in your post. Quick travel and all that magic hehe THANK YOU MALIA TATE FROM ADOXOGRAPHY

murder with no killing | Kensaku nodded at Masaki's plan. More information was always good. "It's good to be working with someone who can plan ahead, for once. I'm afraid I'm bad at packing medical supplies; I always overpack or underpack. I've come to rely on basic first aid and poison extraction techniques more than anything complex." As far as needing anything else, he shook his head. "Nothing comes to mind. I travel light; all I need's in my pockets and my scroll. We'll just have to see what we can find out when we get there."Kensaku led the way out of the room and the village, but allowed Masaki to lead the long walk to Kawa. The other Jounin was better at close range combat than he was, after all. The walk wasn't too bad, but the distance was considerable and passed mostly in silence. Kenny kept pace with Masaki, enjoying the quiet, the calm before the storm, he supposed, however long it lasted. It ended soon enough when the two stood perched in a tree overlooking a poorly-hidden, well-defended complex in the forest. Kensaku unfurled his scroll, a spider made of Iwa steel dropping onto the branch as he used threads of chakra to curl its legs around the wood, suppressing the shine of the thread with the calm and experience of years of practice. Satisfied with the puppet's attachment to the tree, he looked down at the complex. True to its homeland, it was situated next to a river, which supplied the plant life in the area with life-giving water, and presumably did the same for the inhabitants of the complex. If he had about ten times as much time, money, and motivation, he might be able to introduce something nasty into the water for the complex; something like his visage-twisting venom, maybe. The problem was that it'd get to the heiress, too, so that possibility was discounted before he could say anything. The guards were more focused on the ground level than the trees, and for good reason; the area around the complex was cleared, the grass cut short and trees removed, a good hundred feet in every direction. "Well, there are a couple ways we could get in. The Hiding-Like-A-Mole Technique could get us to the walls, there might be access by water if we wait until dark. The problem is, we don't know if they have guards at the river, and they probably do if they're smart. We still need to make an entrance if we use the Mole Technique to get close, and making too much noise might get Kyoko killed. I could distract them with my puppet, but, again, we don't know what they'll do if we scare them too much. Maybe if you get close to the river and find a way in, and I make a distraction for you to rush in and find Kyoko, but if they spot me and not just the puppet then I don't know if I'll be able to take them. What do you think?" |

Masaki chuckled at Kensaku’s small compliment as he nodded in agreement. “To be paired with someone who doesn’t want to rush into battles for once is a treat. And as far medical supplies go, I think we’ll be set,” the brunette answered, giving the shoulder strap of his back a solid pat. “After this, Kensaku, we must get lunch together one day and go over poisons. I’m quite interested in seeing your Yōshiki no Kumo's venom in component terms against my ivy’s Tsutaurushi.” Masaki smiled politely over at his companion, leaving the offer to be taken up for another day. For now they had a mission to start.
And with that the pair was off, Masaki taking the lead as soon as they left the great stone entrance of Iwagakure behind them. The man kept vigilant yet relaxed, well, as relaxed as his stiff walk could come, just in case they ran into any spies from the bandits who would race ahead and warn the others. A part of Masaki doubted that the bandits would be that organized, that efficient in protecting their kidnapped heiress, but if they were that unskilled why sent two A-ranked shinobi? He’d rather over estimate his opponent than wind up dead from an ambush.
After that the walk was free of incidents and there were no complaints or conversations from either ninja as they settled in for the attack, making their base in the branches of a tree. As Kensaku worked to free his puppet, Masaki scanned the fortress, not pleased with the precautions the bandits took in clearing out the forest from their border’s threshold. It would have been easier for both jounin to infiltrate with the foliage, especially Masaki who would have used his kekkei genkai to pick off the guards before they had a chance to notice what was amiss.
Yet, before Masaki could plan any further, Kensaku was speaking. The older jounin listened carefully, his mind automatically nitpicking the flaws and highlighting the tactics that could work as the puppet master continued. “Burrowing underneath would get us past the clearing and if we go deep enough, underneath the walls,” Masaki murmured, thinking out loud at this point. It would be easier for Kensaku to understand his thought process if the brunette did it this way. “To avoid detection we could position our entry point further back so they don’t hear us coming. That’s all for naught if they have a high enough doton based user with them who could feel us in the ground….but that person would have to be very skilled to pick us out. A gamble. That way would be a gamble.”
Masaki shifted slightly, moving some of his weight off his legs as he continued to think. “I bet they will have guards by the river seeing how this side looks and I would advise against us splitting up for too long during this mission. Yes for when it’s absolutely needed, of course, but when it’s not? There’s a reason they made this a team ranked mission and not a solo.”
Still not pleased with the outcome of their planning the man sighed, annoyance hinting even at that breath of air. “I think Hiding Like a Mole Technique would be our best bet at the moment but it is not something I can say that will get us comfortably inside without notice.”
“Thoughts?”

murder with no killing | Kensaku could see the point Masaki had. Splitting up might not be the best thing. There wasn't any telling what the people in that base were capable of, A few tugs on the strings brought his puppet up and onto his back, the legs wrapping firmly around his torso. "That does seem like the best way in, but if we come through the floor inside, we'll be spotted quickly, and we don't know where our VIP is. Still, they aren't coming out, and we can't just sit here until they do. Could be days, weeks. Let me think for a second."And think the man did. He ran through scenarios, possible encounters. They were likely to run into Water Release users, but Lightning and Wind were also likely. There were just too many ninjutsu to account for to predict every outcome, but Kensaku could plan for the most likely things, and they had a fairly simple solution. "You know, it occurs to me that you get a lot closer to everything than I do. They might sneak up on you. There's a thing I've been wanting to try with my chakra threads. If I attach a couple to your arms and legs, I might be able to help you dodge attacks you don't see coming, but you'll have to let me help you. I can't move your limbs completely, I can only start the motion. You'd have to trust me and roll with it. What do you think? |

“Very well,” Masaki hummed, allowing his companion to take the lead in their planning. Between the two of them the pair made for a strong think-tank, each bringing up different views but wise enough not to be offended when the other countered it or suggested an alternative. Some teammates Masaki had were too stubborn for their own good and the good of their mission. That being said, he trusted Kensaku to think of a strategy that complimented both of their intellect and the brunette was not disappointed when his friend finally spoke.
A look of admiration passed over Masaki as he turned to give Kensaku his full attention. “I think, Kensaku, that your puppetry skills are growing stronger,” Nodding his head, Masaki adjusted his pack, moving it so the chakra strings could be attached with ease and without obstruction. Puppet jutsu was not at all Masaki specialty and he only knew the bare basics of it, the kind you would teach at the academy. He wasn’t sure how much room Kensaku would need to attack his strings.
“You have my consent and my help for this plan. And then, if I keep their attention on me, that may give you the opportunity to look for where they’re keeping the heiress. They might have set up more guards by her building,” he shrugged lightly. “Will you need to set up the strings before or after we burrow underneath?”
Masaki was ready to go, he was ready to save this woman and bring her back to her family.

murder with no killing | xxx - Masaki - Sorry. Finals week snuck up on me. Almost done with it, then I'm off til the 25th. Kensaku didn't need much space for his threads. He used his left hand for it, and attached four of them to Masaki; one on each limb. The thumb didn't have the range of motion for what he wanted. "Thank you for the compliment, Masaki." With that, he twitched each of the strings, exerting slight tugs on Masaki's limbs. "See what that feels like? Should be almost like a reflex. It's all I can do with your limbs without you going completely slack, and that'd be counterproductive for taijutsu."Kensaku gestured to the ground. "For this to work, you have to lead. I can't split off from you, either; I have to be able to see you. Best thing I can think is that we'll need to capture one of the people they send for us and make them talk. I think I have a venom in my dear little spider here that will help with that. Hurts like hell, doesn't actually kill." He would follow Masaki into the ground and through to the enemy keep; whether they went inside or not, he left up to the other Jounin. |

You got to cry without weeping Talk without speaking Scream without raising your voice It didn’t take long for Masaki’s partner to connect all the strings and Kensaku certainly didn’t need as much room as Masaki made for him. The sensation was a little strange, knowing that not all of his actions were his own, but that’s where trust came in and if a shinobi couldn’t trust his partner, those from his village, then he would be hard pressed to survive anything. Masaki knew how important these chakra strings would be in the upcoming assault and his plan was to be just as useful to Kensaku as the puppet master was to him. “You start the motion and I will follow it through,” the older jounin replied, watching as his limbs jerked back from Kensaku’s tug. Yes, very strange sensation, but, luckily for both of them, the strings reminded Masaki of his vines and he knew how to maneuver those on a battlefield without getting them tangled. Hopefully he could do the same with Kensaku’s chords, give or take a few mistakes on the man who knew little about puppets. “Keep in your sights, capture one of the bandits alive to bring back,” Masaki nodded, storing the objectives in his mind as he turned back to face Kensaku. “I’ll keep my tunnel open for you to come behind, that way only one of us needs to focus on the move, but as soon as I know you’re out it will close. No need to waste chakra or have enemies surprise us from behind by keeping that hole open.”Confirming that Kensaku understood, Masaki jumped off the tree and landed gracefully on the ground. It might have been better for them to start the technique further back, as they had discussed, yet with the strings and the fact they could be noticed by a doton user anyways, this location was as good as any. “Let’s do this. Doton: Moguragakure no Jutsu - Earth Release: Hiding Like a Mole Technique!” As chakra flooded Masaki’s body, vibrating the earth below his feet into dust, the man tunneled his way into the fortress, knowing that Kensaku would be right behind him- he had no choice with these attacked chakra strings. It didn’t take long for Masaki to tunnel underneath their moat and wall, basing his breaching point on the magnetic readings he felt from above. When Masaki reached a point he felt that had no guards, the man burst through the surface, stepping away so Kensaki could join him as well. And that’s when the jounin heard it. “Huh? Did you hear something, Goro? We should check it out- behind the storage shed, the one next to the wall, yeah.”They’d been noticed. But from the sounds of it their foes were only two in number and hadn't alerted everyone else. --- Ryuutarou Suoh - 445 - No worries!
