This fair maiden hailed from Iwagakure is actually one, if not the only, of those beauties who can launch a thousand jutsus. Her curvaceous, hour-glass body that screams for attention is something to die for, along with her flawless even-toned skin. Mariko's locks are gold in color, with lovely curls and waves, while her eyes are in baby blue hues turn red when agitated or angry.

Standing at 5'6", this beauty queen material believes that she doesn't need flashy attire or too much of accessories. On normal occasions she can be seen wearing ordinary, usually tight-fitting top matched with pair of jeans or bottoms that would compliment her body shape. Her favorite though are tops with ruffles or laces, that accentuate the fullness of her bosoms. When duty calls, she struts in usual shinobi attire, usually a flak jacket, still making sure it is tight-fitting yet comfortable, in mostly colors of black and gray, with her Iwagakure headband neatly placed on her temple and netted knee protector.

Slowbrained: One problem when a person is too beautiful is...*ahem*...the lack the brains. Mariko falls under this stereotype. She can be slow-brained, though she is trying her best to overcome it by learning through and with people. This maiden is forgetful at times too, though two things can be surprising in this aspect: one, she does not forget facts about things that interests her and two, she remembers everything that has happened in the past and present (and becomes impressively intelligent and a quick-thinker) when she is drunk.

Possessive: Ownership is a big issue to her, rooting from the fact that when she was younger she lost important people and precious belongings. She mentally designates things and people if they belong to her or not, and would cling to them and fight for it. Anyone whom she sees trying to take one of them away from her (even if it's just an impression and not outright taking) automatically falls to her hate list until that person proves otherwise.

Impulsive: More often than not, Mariko acts on things or events out of impulse. She has a tendency to speak or do something without thinking of the implications of her words or actions.

Emotional: One cause of her impulsiveness is her being emotional. Mariko is easily agitated, is easy to get upset, but when she is in euphoria it shows very much on her actions and facial expressions.

Kind-hearted: Despite all the above-mentioned flaws, Mariko has a heart of gold. She is almost always willing to help may it be to people whom she knows or to complete strangers. Even if she wouldn't be of use to a task if she feels like a hand is needed she will try to devise ways to help.

Determined and Dedicated: When there is something she has to do, or something she wants to attain, nothing can stop Mariko on doing or attaining it. She places all her effort, heart and ~~liver~~ soul to a task.

Loyal: Mariko has an unwavering devotion and support to Iwagakure. Even if she is born to Konohagure, she is well-aware that if not for the people of Iwagakure she would be dead by now. She would stand up and fight for them despite the fact that she was shamed by some of its people when she was still learning in the Academy. The same kind of loyalty she has for people she considers friends or closer, but then again if push comes to shove despite her heart being torn to pieces Iwagakure is still be her top priority.

biography

~~^{The Tale of the Ugly Duckling}~~

~~Once upon a time in a land far away~~ Mariko was born to traveling merchants who were natives of Konohagure. She was the only child, and despite the meager economic situation of the family the then-child Mariko was showered with everything they could give her.

When she was seven something heartbreaking happened to the traveling merchants. While in the vast lands between Hi no Kuni and Tsuchi no Kuni, the traveling merchants were ambushed by bandits. They were out to take everything ---- their products, their income, and the child since they thought they could sell her for a high price ---- which provoked the parents to fight against the bandits. Mariko's parents received fatal wounds, and just when the bandits thought they would have it all, a pair of Iwagakure shinobi (Sakage Daiki and Satoshi Akiko) came to the 'rescue'. Mariko's parents died. Out of ~~pity~~ compassion, the rescuers decided to take Mariko under their custody. Even if they weren't a pair, and even if it meant that their messed-up lives would be more mess up, for the child's sake they lived together and tried to be her family. In gratitude to what they have done to her, Mariko assumed her foster father's surname.

Mariko then spent her life in Iwagakure. Her foster parents tried to be as good set of parents to her, though they always believed they fall short since most of the times they were away due to missions. Mariko didn't mind this at all. In fact, she was ever grateful to them, and thought they were giving more than enough. Mariko tried to live a normal life with them, tried to show them she was always alright even though deep inside she was still mourning and longing for her real parents. She didn't want them to know her inner struggles because she didn't want them to think she was ungrateful...she didn't want to see them sad after all the kindness they have showed to her.

Growing up, Mariko didn't show any physical signs of being pretty. Her curly hair was always tied up in a loose pony tail. She would wear baggy clothes or anything that would reveal less of her skin. She looked nothing but ordinary...and her slow brain made everything more difficult.

When she reached ten, they realized Mariko's affinity with Fire Release. Some believed it was quite late for her to exhibit such. Daiki and Akiko knew about it, but they wouldn't tell Mariko as they did not want to discourage the child. Akiko would teach Mariko the basics, though deep inside Akiko doubted if Mariko grasped whatever she taught, knowing that the child wasn't bright.

Not long enough she entered the academy. Mariko had a hard time catching up with everyone. She was always taunted and laughed at because of her lack of skill and intelligence. She would cry secretly because of all they were saying against her, but the same comments pushed her to try harder and even just a little, improve herself. She would spend nights studying and training even if it meant a little to no sleep --- especially when the exams were nearing. She would continually ask her foster parents for tips, and would even observe her classmates when they were being boisterous of what they could do. Sadly despite her efforts she failed to graduate on first try, failing at the practical exam.

That time she failed she got depressed. Failing the Academy indeed broke her heart. She didn't want to go out of her house or her room, or communicate with anyone, even her parents. Mariko would spend days and nights crying. No one could actually make her stop. No one could uplift her spirit...until one day she just mysteriously stopped mourning and asked to be sent back again to the Academy.

Mariko made her resolve. She would try to change everything...if she couldn't get people with her intellect, she would take them with charm. If her skills wouldn't be enough, beauty should fill in the gap. Before going back to the ninja school she would experiment on different aesthetic-enhancing items her mother has in her room. She learned how to comb her hair neatly. She learned how to dress well. She reinvented herself...became more vain...which surprised her foster parents.

She was sent back, but this time everyone was almost shocked of her physical transformation. She was still most determined, but because of how pleasant she would look now critiques were more softer on her --- magically? She was given all the help she needed, mostly by male classmates. This, and determination, and working hard, her efforts didn't come in vain...she passed and became Genin.
