'REMEMBER YOU ALMOST HAD IT ALL' Setting One: Iwagakure Gates
After reading a letter left at the door of her abode, Mariko felt her heart thumped in excitement. Finally, a one-on-one training with Masaki-sensei. This what was she has been waiting for. She has wanted to have some of these private training sessions before, but was too shy to approach her sensei about it, thinking either he was busy or the girl just didn't like bothering other people.
Mariko always felt she was three steps behind her genin cellmates --- not like she wasn’t behind before, but this predicament she was trapped in felt like the Academy all over again. It was a bit of pain to catch up and improve at the same rate as others did. There were also not-so-pleasant thoughts that sink in her head, telling her that her lack of adeptness and not being as bright as others would make Team One lag behind. Despite feeling bad about it, the girl didn't choose to delve on it longer. These realizations...these ideas...pushed her to try harder, not to mention grab opportunities like this one.
After gearing up in her full shinobi attire, flak jacket and all, she ran out of her abode to meet Masaki-sensei at the gates of Iwagakure. Her legs swung like rapid pendulums as the body paced forward. Relying mainly on impulse she managed to evade blockages and people on her way. None of them stumbled or has accidentally fallen down, which was a good sign. It didn't take long and she reached it --- despite being not so brilliant, she still has the speed of a ninja. She slowly came to a halt and stopped by the entrance without heaving. The blonde gazed left and right looking for her sensei, but it seemed he has not arrived yet. Mariko stood to wait for him, while kicking and playing with the stone and dust on her feet.

You got to cry without weeping Talk without speaking Scream without raising your voice Spindly fingers plucked at the materials Masaki would need for this mission, taking with him basic medical and offensive supplies as well as the bottles and bags required for the herbalism side of the objective. With the Chuunin Exams looming near and tensions growing between the villages after the Kage Summit, Masaki knew he needed to get his team prepared well and quickly. He’d done the group missions with his supervision and without it and he made sure everyone worked together smoothly but there was still something he hadn’t done, not yet. One on one time with each his genin. Spending personal time with his students was something the jounin firmly believed in, especially when it came to Mariko. He’d witnessed the struggles and doubt the teenager received throughout her career at the Academy and Masaki resented those who gifted those fears. He valued intelligence and he valued enthusiasm but that didn’t mean he couldn't appreciate the determination of someone who improved and worked hard instead of naturally ‘getting it’. Mariko belonged in that category, the one that put in more effort because they lacked something. For Masaki himself that had been family, his sister, and for Mariko it was, in her own words, brain smarts. He believed that she had the ability to train her mind just as much as she trained her jutsu. And although it may never come naturally, Mariko had the makings of being a loving and strong shinobi one day. It’s why he assigned her to this mission in particular. Gathering different herbs not natural to Iwa would test her mind while the process of storing herbs for medical purposes was also a new training Masaki had yet to show her. Personally, he was excited to have company and for Mariko to try these techniques out. Tugging on his pack, Masaki departed his apartment and started the walk to Iwa’s gate, knowing his student should already be there by now. Masaki wasn’t exactly a fast sensei, though that had nothing to do with him being lazy or forgetful, he just took time in his work, cherishing the details more than most men. His shoes tapped at the hard ground, pushing him forward till he finally caught a mane of blonde hair and the teenager attached to it. Masaki smiled at her as he closed the distance, watching as Mariko toyed with a lonely rock on the ground. “I’m pleased you’ve joined me today, Mariko,” the brunette said, getting straight to business so they could start the long hike to Kusagakure no Sato- it would take them a few days in total to complete this mission, depending on their pace. “Most of the mission’s information was in the letter I addressed to but as we travel we’ll work on your jutsus and basic knowledge of battlefield strategies and survival tricks. Anything that can help you for the Chuunin Exams.”Green eyes softened a bit as he looked at Mariko. He wondered if she was anxious about those exams considering her past with graduating the Academy? But Masaki would not allow her to go in unprepared and scared. “For now we can just talk,” he said, motioning to the world stretching beyond Iwagakure’s gate. Masaki started the pace knowing his student wouldn’t be far behind. “How are you feeling today?” --- Mariko - 553 - Notes: Just to let you know the WC for the site is 250 x3 But, ah, these two feel like they will be good for each other student/teacher wise <3

'REMEMBER YOU ALMOST HAD IT ALL' As her feet tapped the lone rock, making it gather more dust from the ground, Mariko's thoughts drifted to what today's task would be. Picking herbs and flowers seemed to be too easy for a training, maybe Masaki-sensei just added that as a side thing, and that what she really has to excel and focus at was the tiger attacks? But knowing the jounin, he definitely wouldn't choose that task for nothing, and it won't be just because the hospital needed those herbs. Definitely there was something else. 'I wonder what that could be.'
Suddenly a familiar voice cut short the roaming thoughts of this blonde. Mariko straightened up and turned to meet him. Finally Masaki-sensei has arrived. The girl bent her back as a sign of respect, then pulled herself up again to join him as he walked. "No sensei, I'm most pleased to finally have a one-on-one training with you! Thank you for your time!" Mariko's voice was filled with excitement.
Their journey has started. He started talking about the lowdown of today's mission, which the blond-haired girl has been trying to hold in her mind after reading it six times back home. But the moment he mentioned of the Chuunin exams, the girl couldn't help but gulp. Yeah, that almost slipped her mind. All this time she was just thinking of being able to at least match the other genins' improvements and strengths, but completely forgot that this was also all about the up coming exams. Scratching the back of her head, she answered. "To be honest I completely forgot about the exams," she ended it with a nervous laugh. What would he think after hearing of that?
"But it doesn't mean I don't want to get on a higher rank. It just really slipped my mind. Though..." she paused for a while, a change in facial expression and tone of voice was evident, "a part of myself want to believe I can make it...the other part tells me I'll just die there." Looking at her sensei, she hoped she didn't make him feel upset of what she said --- she didn't intend to make a notion that he wasn't a good teacher...the problem was her and not him. "B-but hey, isn't that what we're here for? Hahaha!"

You got to cry without weeping Talk without speaking Scream without raising your voice His student’s nervousness didn’t go unseen by Masaki’s keen eyes as the Chuunin Exams were brought up. Unfortunately, Mariko’s reaction was just as he thought it would be, not that Masaki could blame her for that, for anticipation over tests and over advancements- it’s all that ever seemed to be drilled into Mariko’s mind when she was at the Academy. Masaki hoped to change this attitude the genin had as he trained her, helped her grow into a strong kunoichi that would one day raise her own team or go on to a corps or whatever her heart desired. Giving Mariko that confidence and training in herself was one of the reasons Masaki had been pleased her name had shown up on Team One’s roster. He was a sensei known for giving all his effort and patience with a student and Mariko needed that. The jounin listened to his student’s concerns, nodding his head as she explained herself. His genin was often forgetful, Masaki knew this well from their training and missions- and for the detail oriented man this absentmindedness drove him crazy at times- but he also knew that Mariko latched onto things that interest her. So that either meant she was nervous about the exams and hid behind her forgetfulness or she these exams weren’t of interest to her. Masaki’s mind whirled as he gave a sideways glance to Mariko, studying her intently as he continued to listened. There was a chance, of course, that he was misreading his student. Perhaps he would find out in today’s mission. “Between your own intuition of these exams and my evaluation of yourself and the team,” Masaki finally said, the padding of their feet accompanying his voice. “That’s how, together, we’ll determine if any of you are ready for the Chuunin Exams. Personally, your skills in ninjutsu and your loyalty to your teammates will serve you well. That I know.”Masaki adjusted the strap of his backpack, hitching it away from his collarbone. “I would never send you in there to die,” his words were unnervingly grave but before Masaki continued he smiled down at Mariko, the faint lines around his eyes scrunching slightly. He seemed upbeat again. “But, yes, you’re right. That is exactly what this mission is all about!”“Are there any skills you want to work on in particular?” At their current pace they would reach Kusagakure no Sato by the next day, perhaps afternoon. That worked well for Masaki as often teachers forgot that their students needed as much emotional training and friendly attention as they did bodily training. --- Mariko - 423 - So I based almost all of this off of her bio since I'm assuming Masaki would know her personality by now. If any of it is too much or if he/I read too in detail or it's something that Mariko wouldn't show or isn't like then let me know and I'll change it. :3 Also we can totally time skip and jump to them at Kusagakure~ If you'd like
