Haruka stands at the average height of 5'6", and weighs a very petite 127lbs. Her lithe frame is curvaceous, and though this is not something she actively flaunts her choice in clothing could be considered a bit revealing. Though the kunoichi simply wears what is easiest to move in, and perhaps more importantly, what keeps her well hidden. For missions, her usual attire consists of a tight fitting, backless bodysuit that moves much like a second skin. It's made of a very light material and aids in maintaining her speed. For both warmth and protection against the terrain, she can often be seen wearing beige colored leg and arm warmers, a scarf large enough to cover her head like a hood, and a matching sash around her waist where tools and her headband are secured. As for her bodysuit, her color of choice is almost always black. A striking difference against her bright, golden eyes and deep purple hair that she keeps secured up in a ponytail with a band and braided rope. She can also be seen in a bright orange, lightweight coat as the weather grows a bit cooler as well as around the village. The bright color is one of her favorites, and flatters her dark skin.
As a member of the Saito clan, she has a few distinguishing marks. Some aren't as noticable, such as her extended canines that are developed far more like a wild animal's than a humans, and strong, pointed nails that she on occasion "accidentally" forgets to file down. Hey, just another weapon right? This is due to her genetic makeup being altered, and therefore differing from that of the average shinobi. Members of the Saito clan have blood mixed with that of a centuries old pack of black panthers found in the mountains of Kumogakure, and as such have developed animalistic traits both physically and mentally. It should be noted that members of the Saito clan have a blood type that is incompatible with those outside their own clan, and as such Haruka is unable to receive blood transfusions or give them unless it is from/to a member of her own clan. The more noticable distinguishing marks are those etched into her skin. On her left shoulder blade is a large clan tattoo that she shows proudly with her backless bodysuit. From her most recent mission, she acquired several deep scars: one across her right hip, another just under her right breast that wrap around to her back, and one down the entire back of her right calf.

Perhaps one of the most important traits to know about Haruka is that she has a strong pack mentality that has bled into most areas of her life. She's fiercely loyal to a small set of people - her pack or tribe, if you will - and would do anything to protect them. She would give her life, if need be. This group is family, even if her 'pack' isn't made up of only blood relatives. Haruka doesn't make friends; she builds a family. The quickest way to anger her would be to harm anyone close to her, and what is morally justified is quickly thrown out the window when someone she cares about is in danger. She will go to any length. Ties to her village or organization are but optional acquaintances when put next to those she has deemed part of her pack. These are lifelong relationships, and severance of these bonds is a very rare and serious occurrence. It takes a lot for Haruka to give up on someone, but once she has, it's permanent. It isn't that she holds a grudge, but when a relationship is over for her - be it friend or mate - it is really over.
As a member of the Saito Clan, Haruka is very cat-like and in tune with the most primal, basic instincts of animals. She is driven by curiosity, always seeking new adventure and knowledge without a thought to danger. Haruka has a dangerous air of invincibility that has bitten her in the ass on more than one occasion, but she is a prideful creature. Failure hits hard, but it only means she must work harder. On the flipside, Haruka is easily bored. If there is nothing for her to pursue or explore, she quickly becomes lazy and spends her days taking long cat naps. Though she can be serious and mature when the situation calls for it.
Humor and sarcasm are two of Haruka's favorite things, and they're very apparent in the way she speaks. She lacks the refined speech of a lady, often foregoing the proper way to say things or using rather vulgar language. But she's a hoot to be around. Always the comedian with a love for life. She's known for teasing everyone and being quite the trickster.
In fact, Haruka's biggest trick is her appearance. She prefers to run around as a small, black cat. Even completing stealth missions in this form. But she's notorious for seeing how long she can get people to think she is actually a cat, and changing back into her actual human form at the most opportune moment. It's never not given her a good laugh. Nearly everyone in her 'pack' has had to go through this experience, and it isn't a tradition she intends to stop anytime soon. Though, this isn't the only reason she remains in this form so often. She doesn't share her reasons much, but Haruka feels more like herself as a cat. Continued use of the Saito Clan's hiden jutsu can condition this. Leaving clan members who are constantly shifting to be more animalistic in nature. Driven by more primal desires. And all around more comfortable in this cat form. This can make 'playing human' almost foreign, and some of Haruka's mannerisms are more 'cat' than 'human' because of this.
As a kunoichi, Haruka prefers to work alone. This isn't due to a dislike of or inability to work in groups, but out of fear that she can't protect everyone. It's easier to work alone. Easier to remain unattached in a world as cruel as the shinobi world. Though this doesn't always mean everyone is so ready to get along with her, or operate under her leadership. She has a very egalitarian view of society that doesn't suit the shinobi ranking system, and refers to anyone on her team as an equal. No one is above or below her, and this can be frustrating for some. She isn't one to use suffixes or involve herself in politics, but this doesn't mean she isn't respectful. Despite all of this, she has good leadership and communication skills. But her decisions are prone to being easily influenced by emotion ("no man left behind"), and guided by an uncommon set of ethics. |
Haruka was born a proud member of the ancient Saito Clan. Legends say that the clan has been around since the very discovery of chakra in Kumogakure, and this clan has a special bond with the black panthers that have made a home of Kumogakure's mountains. The clan used to be very nomadic, moving throughout the mountains alongisde the panther's migration patterns. They hunted alongside them, and eventually, even mixed their very blood with them. This came with a number of pros and cons. It strengthed the Saito, giving them the ability to create a vast line of hiden jutsu thanks to their unique bloodline that now allowed them to take the form of their panther counterparts. However, Kumogakure did not look fondly upon this act. It took years for the Saito to regain acceptance and dissolve the stigma of their bloodline. There was also the new issue of their frailty. Though clan members are by no means weak, even the smallest injury sustained could be lethal if too much blood was lost. Due to their blood being mixed, it is unlike any other shinobi's and therefore the Saito are unable to receive blood transfusions from those outside their clan. As such, many clan members have taken to non-combatant roles. But some have also chosen the life of a shinobi, though it is a dangerous one to take, and they often fill highly specialized roles that aren't on the front lines.
Growing up, Haruka was a very curious child. Both of her parents had chosen the life of a shinobi, and she couldn't imagine a life as a boring ol' civilian. She had such an affinity for the clan's hiden jutsu, spending as much time as she could running around in the form of a small, black cat. Suffice to say her academy days were fond ones where she played pranks on her class and aggravated her sensei. Thankfully, she was bright enough to pass. Though her parents wonder if the academy just wanted to be spared another year of her tricks.
It was during her time on a Genin team that Haruka truly began to flourish. She'd spent her time in the academy playing around rather than figuring out her goals and her specialty. The latter of which was a pressing question within her clan when one decided to be a shinobi. Haruka found jutsu fascinating, and was instantly drawn to ninjutsu at first. This allowed her to continue perfecting her transformation jutsu, and she was soon known as a cat-shinobi to her team and much of Kumogakure, as she favored the form over her human form. Constantly transforming and maintaining the appearance seemed to be the only form of real training her sensei could get her to do, as it required great chakra control and a continuous flow of chakra to maintain. Her skill with chakra to this day is great because of this, but she suffers from a lack of real combat skills.
As such, Haruka decided to work a combination of solo and small team missions as a Chuunin, mostly in intelligence and infiltration. These didn't always involve a whole lot of fight, if you were sneaky. And most weren't expecting a cat to be eavesdropping on their conversation or using jutsu. It was a relatively safe route for her to choose, and it allowed her to continue her expertise at being quite the trickster. Even better? Running around as a cat actually made her job easier. Her line of work required a greater knowledge of sensory, and it was here she found her specialization. Soon Kumogakure recognized her talent too, and after many successful missions she was promoted to a Tokubetsu Jounin. The promotion brought her clan great honor, but it also granted Haruka a great amount of freedom. Taking advantage of this, she began taking solo missions that required extensive traveling. She made a point to see every village she could, and spent most of this time as - you guessed it - a cat. Very few have actually met Haruka because of this, but that tends to work in her favor.
Haruka had intended to spend much of her life this way. Traveling and working to gather intel not only to protect her clan, but to strengthen Kumogakure. Whether it be by keeping tabs on nukenin, infiltrating other village's organizations, gathering intel by spying, or assassination missions. However, her focus on stealth and fun over combat prowess got the better of her. In her most recent mission, Haruka was tasked with locating a gang of rogue shinobi from one of the smaller villages. She was to locate them and infiltrate their group, if possible, to gather intel. Rumors had been going around that the gang was planning to hit Kumogakure, and the Raikage needed to know the 'when' and 'how'. Haruka was not to be the one to put them down, they had others for that. Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned.
After a month of playing a nukenin from Kumogakure, it was time for Haruka to break away from the group. This was easier said than done, and the village sent her two other shinobi as back up. However, without any previous communication she was unable to keep the story straight when the group of rogue shinobi found her reinforcements, forcing a battle to the death. They were outnumbered five to three by the nukenin, but persevered. Haruka doesn't remember much of the battle, just that it was bloody and that she woke up in the Kumogakure hospital covered in scars and bandages. She'd sustained heavy injuries that required not only a great deal of rest, but physical rehabilitation for much of the muscles on the right side of her body. By order of the Raikage and the medical staff at the hospital, she was to take the necessary time off to heal. Haru tried to fight the ruling, but there was no getting around her physical disability for the first few months.
Now, nearly nine months later Haruka is ready to get back into the field. Though something has changed. Recognizing the weakness that had her down for the count for so long, she spends at least an hour daily learning the taijutsu style of the Saito clan in her clan compound. The kunoichi refuses to be too weak to protect those around her again. Sensing this shift, the Raikage has decided to assign Haruka to co-lead a team of Genin alongside her usual missions. She isn't sure what the Raikage means by having her watch over a bunch of kids, and frankly, she wants no part of it. But the kunoichi is trying to see it as another opportunity to grow, and besides, who is she to tell the Raikage 'no'? It's not like he'd listen anyway!
