Hot Day in the Leaf [Open]
|
Post by Kuro Dazai on May 28, 2015 15:40:09 GMT -7
It was the middle of the afternoon. The sun beamed down on the village from high in the day sky, and not a cloud could be seen anywhere. The air was particularly hot today as the sun continued to cook the flesh right on a person's bones. It might not be so bad had there been clouds to block some of the relentless sunlight once in a while, and give the poor inhabitants of Konohagakure a little bit of shade. But alas, that was too much to ask for. The only thing a person could do in this heat was to stay inside somewhere, where there was a little bit of shade, and maybe an ice cold beverage.
Kuro could be found in a small, local tavern in Konoha. There were fans spinning on the ceiling, circulating the air around. A slight, heavenly breeze could be felt once in a while as the circulating air briefly picked up force. They creaked ever so slightly as the rotated, but only loud enough to hear if you really listened for it. The blinds were all shut on the windows, preventing the sunlight and heat from entering the tavern, keeping the air cool. This was typically the tavern Kuro chose to spend his time, regardless of the cruel heat outside.
The tavern was surprisingly empty. A man sat in the corner. He looked rather rugged, with his tattered and dirty clothes, and his unshaven face. He must have been working in the fields or something. His finger nails were full of dirt, and his face was layered with a combination of perspiration and dirt. There he sat, drink in hand. It was clear that the heat was too much for him right now, so he was giving himself a break, cooling off.
At the bar sat two more, younger looking fellows. One of them had just ordered a saké, while the other was sipping on an ice cold glass of water. They were talking amonst themselves, chatting about all sorts of things. It seemed as though they were shinobi, based on the outfits the two men were wearing. Probably Chuunin, as they were a little unfamiliar to Kuro. But then again, Kuro never made much of an effort to get to know the other shinobi these days. Most of his time was spent here, in this very tavern, drinking alone.
Kuro slammed back the rest of his saké, and slid the empty glass up with the other three empty ones. His face was warm, and his cheeks were getting red. Kuro's eyes were glazed and growing heavy now. He took one hard look at the group of empty glasses in front of him, and decided it wasn't enough. He raised his arm in the air slightly, signaling the bartender for one more. The bartender glanced at him, and nodded, acknowledging Kuro' request. He rest both his arms on the table in front of him, staring out in front of him, lost in his thoughts.
Prior to his arriving at the tavern, Kuro had been summoned by the Hokage herself. She had made a personal request of Kuro. One he did not particularly like. Mizuko had asked Kuro to personally care for a team of Genin once more. To take on a team of three, fresh Genin straight from the academy. She knows what had happened five years ago. Yet, she still made such a request. Kuro wanted nothing to do with this request. Was she trying to get more Genin killed? He wasn't cut out for it, and simply scoffed at her before storming out of the Hokage's office.
Moments later, Kuro found himself at his usual tavern. He ordered two saké as soon as he sat at the table, and they were both gone in seconds. Soon came the third, and then the fourth. Now, the fifth. The bartender placed the glass in front of Kuro, and he quickly snapped out of his daze.
"Kuro." the bartender began. "It's been five years. Don't you think it's time to forget about it? I see you in here every single day, drinking yourself stupid. That can't be - "
Kuro cut the bartender off. "I'll listen to your lectures when you can tell me you know exactly how I feel, and not a day sooner."
The bartender stood there for a moment, just looking at Kuro. Kuro could see the worry on the man's face. As if the man were looking at a friend he could no longer recognize. A man who had changed so dramatically. Before walking off, the bartender gave Kuro a pat on the back.
"Don't be so hard on yourself." He stated as he began to walk away, back to the bar. Kuro grabbed the drink, and began sipping on it.

It was a scorching day, one too hot even for a prominent member of the Kuzashi. Yamada let out an exasperated sigh as he made his way down the street. Too hot to work. Too hot to play. Might as well go for a drink, he thought to himself. So here he was. Making his way through the sweltering heat towards a local tavern that he can only assume would already be packed with like-minded individuals. Yamada had barely gotten out of bed no more than an hour earlier. It had been a late night for him out at the Kuzashi compound and even he wasn't sure exactly what time he'd packed up for the night. Lately things had been slowing down with his family affairs though so he had more opportunities to doing things like this. Taking days off and rotting his skills away.
He noticed before he'd even gotten to the tavern that there were barely any people out today. Most of them hiding where the sun couldn't get them. It wouldn't have mattered much though. When it was this hot the only safe place was in another country. Perhaps this was why there seemed to be so few shinobi left in the village. Yamada was a little envious that he hadn't personally thought of using a mission as an excuse to find a better climate for a few days. There was one benefit to this weather however. Women, including the Hokage, would be forced to wear less than normal. A view that Yamada found favourable.
Luckily for them though his thoughts were interrupted as he arrived at his destination. The bar was a small one but they had cold drink and decent food, so long as you had the coin. He pushed his way into the place, which was significantly more barren than he thought it'd be. This was good though as it meant he could enjoy a refreshing beverage without having to put up with too much noise. Normally he was all for making a ruckus but the heat had drained every bit of energy he had and really all he wanted at this point was a relaxing atmosphere where he could waste away until the sun went down and it was safe to go back outside.
Yamada stood at the entrance to the bar for a moment, surveying those who were inside. There were a few heads he recognized but had no desire to drink with. Eventually though his eyes settled on a fairly sorry sight. A colleague of his, whom he'd known briefly in their youth before Yamada had gone off to do other work, was sitting hunched over a table having a drink. On a day like this, that would not have been out of the ordinary. The thing was though, Yamada knew this particular man would have been here rain or shine. It seemed he always had a drink in hand and a glaze of his eyes. No too mention today he already had several empty glasses in front of him. He didn't consider Kuro to be a dear friend, but it was hard to ignore this regardless. Yamada took a deep breath and then made his way over to the jounin.
"Kuro, fancy meeting you here!" A smile sat on his lips. They both knew the friendly greeting was a light jab at the man. Yamada's attempt at injecting humour into an otherwise sad encounter. When he reached the table he took a seat opposite his friend as he casually pushed four empty glasses to the side. Raising a hand up over his shoulder to get the bartender's attention, he called out "Something cold over here!"
Once he was settled he stretched his arm out over the back of the chair and leaned back, taking a good look at the already-a-little-tipsy man in front of him. After a brief moment of silence he decided to strike up a conversation.
"I heard you got called into the principal's office this morning. Lucky man. Tell me, what was she wearing?" Yamada raised his eyebrows. A question that sounded like a joke, but was ever so serious.

swallowed by the past | Kuro sat at his table, alone. He took a sip of his fifth cup of saké, and sat there in silence, ignoring everything around him. He was trapped in his own mind for the time being, and the only crutch he had was his alcohol. Though, an unexpected guest had decided to visit the tavern as well. A man Kuro definitely knew, but was by no means close with. Kuro glanced up as the black haired man approached the table. Yamada greeted Kuro as though it were a pleasant surprise, but Kuro knew it wasn't genuine. Kuro watched as Yamada slid the empty glasses to the side to make room for himself, before taking a seat across from him. It was obvious as to why this man would decide to come to the tavern. The bloody heat. It seemed as though Yamada couldn't handle it either, despite being well known for his shakuton. Even The Crimson Flame himself couldn't handle it right now. Ah well. Kuro wasn't about to turn away the company. Truth be told, he missed his days of socializing. He missed the long, drawn out conversations he could easily have with the other shinobi around the village. The company could be nice. May serve as a nice distraction for the time being. "I heard you got called into the principal's office this morning. Lucky man. Tell me, what was she wearing?" Yamada asked him. It was clear that word had gotten around that the Hokage herself had summoned him. How unfortunate.
"Too much." Kuro answered with a slight grin. It was no secret that the Hokage was quite attractive. Kuro may have changed a lot, but he still enjoyed the sight of an attractive woman as much as the next man. He quickly scanned the tavern, ensuring that the Hokage herself didn't hear that. She'd probably have both of their heads on a pike in seconds. His gaze switched back to Yamada as he took another sip of his drink.
"I see that even The Crimson Flame himself has his limits when it comes to the heat." Kuro stated.
Kuro took another sip of his drink, and let out a light sigh. "She called me in to offer me another team of Genin." he told Yamada. "Naturally, I declined it. Again."
Kuro glanced up, just passed Yamada's shoulder. Out from the bar came the bartender, with a drink in his hand. He was walking straight towards the two Jounin.

"Too much." Kuro was clearly disappointed with the chosen attire of their leader. Yamada let a look of sadness fall over his face as he let his fantasy die.
It's always business with that woman. "Shame." The only word, laced with disappointment of his own, to leave Yamada's lips. After a moment he perked up though, realizing that if this weather continued his chances of getting a peek would only increase. A devious smile replaced the doom and gloom. While these thoughts ran around in Yamada's head, Kuro took another drink before once again addressing him, this time commenting on his inability to handle the heat. He let out a deep sigh before replying.
"My limit was about 20 degrees ago. This is just obscene." He remarked. As if to complement his statement he used the back of his hand to wipe sweat from his brow. "They don't pay me enough to do anything but drink in this weather." Speaking of which, where the hell was his drink? With his luck the bloody ice machine wouldn't be functioning today. So far the only 'relief' he had was the ceiling fans blowing hot air around him. Helping, but hardly at all.
After another sip Kuro got to the real point of why he'd been speaking to the Hokage. It was no surprise that she'd wanted him to take on a genin team. Most of the jounin were being pushed into it, now that there was an influx of graduates. With no war going on it was important to take this opportunity to build their military might back up. There was a second reason she'd specifically talked to Kuro though, one that was maybe even more important. Yamada had heard the rumours. Apparently during a mission around five years back he'd fallen into a trap and every genin on his team had been killed in the encounter.
While one could argue that it wasn't his fault because the mission had been ranked lower than it should have been, at the end of the day Yamada understood that responsibility for these kinds of mistakes weighed most heavily on the team leader. He wasn't unfamiliar with this kind of failure himself, though Kuro seemed to take it harder than most and understandably so. For a moment Yamada tried to think of a witty joke but decided against it. His better judgement did sometimes win out when it came to sensitive discussions.
The bartender arrived at their table with his drink, interrupting his train of thought. He thanked the man and then grabbed the cup to take a drink, finishing the cool drink in almost one go. After he was satisfied he set it down on the table and looked over at Kuro.
"Naturally." He responded. He paused for a moment before adding "You know, things seem to be stabilizing a bit in the world. Now wouldn't be the worst time to get back in the field. I've recently considered it myself, now that things are getting back to normal with the family." It was true. Missions were readily available but their difficulties were lower than they were five years ago. Many of the villages had made amends to some degree and while there were still hostile feelings between one another it was much less common to see them get involved in an all out conflict.

swallowed by the past | "I know what you mean" Kuro responded to Yamada's statement about the heat. It was way too hot. He couldn't even begin to imagine what it would be like to be out on a mission right now in this heat. To be outside, constantly on the move. To have to sneak around and not be caught while simultaneously trying not to collapse from a heat stroke. The effort would be far too great. Not worth the amount of ryo he might make from the mission itself. That sounded simply terrible to Kuro. He wiped the sweat from his forehead, a reflex as he watched Yamada do the same. The bartender had placed Yamada's drink on the table. It was clear that Yamada was thirsty. Who could blame him? That heat nearly sapped every bit of hydration from the two of them. Kuro watched as Yamada nearly slammed the entire drink in one go. Kuro followed his lead, and slammed back the rest of his drink, holding it in his mouth for a brief second to savour the taste before swallowing it in one gulp. He set the glass down to the side, along with the other four empty ones, and contemplated calling for sixth. Yamada began to speak about Kuro's meeting with the Hokage, and his statement about what it involved. Kuro was asked to take on a team of Genin, andh e had originally declined, fearing that he was not fit to lead a team of Genin. He probably wasn't. Kuro is an alcoholic, who can do nothing but feel sorry for himself. At this current moment, he certainly wasn't fit to lead a group of learning shinobi. He knew that. "I'll get back out there," he replied. "but I won't be leading a team any time soon."Kuro glanced away awkwardly for a second. He's be lying if he didn't admit that he was at least interested in leading another team. He often reminisced about the days he led his former team of Genin. Prior to the incident, he quite enjoyed it. Watching the Genin grow in front of his very eyes. Watching them take on challenge after challenge, working harder each day in order to meet their goals and become great shinobi. He loved to help them in anyway he could. Show them the proper techniques behind throwing kunai, or how to set up traps. He even enjoyed teaching them how to work as a team, instead of individually, even if the bickering between the Genin was a little frustrating at times.Teaching another team was something Kuro wondered about a lot. This fear of history repeating itself has thus far prevented that. Kuro reached into his pocket, and pulled out a package of cigarettes. Opening up the corner, he tapped the box into his palm, and a single cigarette fell out, into his hand. After placing it between his lips, he pulled out a lighter and lit it up. With his right hand, he grabbed the cigarette while he inhaled deeply, then removed it from his lips, blowing the smoke off to the side, careful not to blow it in Yamada's face. With his left hand he gestured the pack of cigarettes towards Yamada, offering him one. "Cigarette?" he asked. "They're great for the stress. Bad for everything else."Kuzashi Yamada |

Yamada knew better than to try and talk Kuro into taking on another team. He'd leave that discussion for the Hokage. Really, it wasn't any of his business to push work on any of the other shinobi anyway. After a moment of contemplation he decided to drop the topic. He lifted the cup in front of him up to his mouth and slowly finished off what remained of his drink. He placed the glass over with the others in an attempt to at least make it look like his friend hadn't just finished five on his own. Yamada decided he could do with one more. He hailed the bartender over to their table, this time just asking for an ice water.
After sitting quietly for a moment Kuro pulled out a pack of cigarettes and lit one for himself before gesturing the box towards Yamada.
"No thanks, drinking in the early afternoon is my one bad choice for the day." He raised his hand to decline. Though he'd never been a smoker, many people in his family were so the familiar scent of the tobacco now wafting through the air didn't bother him all that much. "Besides, it's too bloody hot for anything fire related today."
Leaning back in his seat once again, he eyed up his colleague. Clearly two too many drinks into the day, a less-than-sober look on his face. The cigarette now hanging from his mouth. While doing so, an idea struck him. A way to solve both of their problems, at least short term. If they took on a mission together it was unlikely they'd face any danger that would cause them too much distress and it would take Kuro's mind off of his meeting this morning. Plus, in Yamada's favour, it would take him out of this blistering heat. He'd just have to choose a mission that allowed him to travel to a country with more accessible water and perhaps a little bit of rain. Once he'd worked out all the details in his head he spoke.
"So, I'm thinking that you and I haven't been on a mission together in years. What say we blow this popsicle stand and get some actual work done. I don't have anything going on for the next few weeks." He paused for a second before adding comically, "Perhaps we travel to a country with actual popsicles." Yamada laughed at his horrible joke for a second before calming down to await Kuro's response.

swallowed by the past | Yamada polished off his drink, and slid it over with the large group of empty glasses. Kuro's eyes followed the glass as it clinked with the rest of them. Quite a large number of them sat there. Hardly bothered Kuro, though. It wasn't as though this wasn't a regular occurrence or anything. The bartender has watched Kuro drink much, much more than this. On more than one occasion. Each time, he was alone. Kuro had offered Yamada one of his cigarettes, but Yamada had declined. Ah well. That just meant more for Kuro. Kuro shrugged, and shut the lid on the pack of cigarettes. He placed the cigarette pack between his lips before sliding the pack of cigarettes into his pocket. Kuro inhaled deeply once more, then grabbed the cigarette, pulling it out from his lips, and exhaled once more. Smoke moved up through his respiratory system, slowly rising up from his open mouth. "Suit yourself." Kuro responded as his lips clamped down on the cigarette once more. Then it happened. Something that Kuro had never expected. Yamada pitched an idea to him. Yamada wanted to grab a mission, and asked Kuro to help him out. Kuro thought about it for a moment. It had certainly been a long time since the two of them had taken on a mission together. Kuro could certainly use the ryo. As well as a good distraction. It wouldn't kill him to get out of this blasted heat, either. The journey might be a little hot at first, but they were bound to get out of it sooner or later. Kuro had made a decision. "You know what?" Kuro began as he stood from his chair. "You're right. Let's go."Kuro reached into his pocket, pulling out some ryo. He placed the coins onto the table, before turning around and walking towards the door. Suddenly, Kuro stopped. He let out a casual cough, and cleared his throat a bit before turning around to speak to Yamada. "By the way... could you try not to sound like we're about to run away together the next time you ask me to go on a mission with you?" Kuro then began to stumble out of the door, ready to take on a mission. Though, perhaps sobering up a little first might be a good idea. Kuzashi Yamada |

Yamada paused in slight disbelief. Kuro agreed to going on a mission a lot easier than Yamada had initially thought he would. He had an entire plan laid out to convince him to team up but it appeared that would not be necessary. It was a little disappointing too. It was a good plan. After a moment Kuro got up and laid some coin on the table, paying for the both of their drinks. Intentional or not, Yamada appreciated this. As Kuro started to take off his final drink came. Before his friend was out the door though he turned around, commenting on Yamada's choice of words. This brought a smile to Yamada's face.
"Well, if we take a C or D Rank mission it'll pretty much be like a date. But you better not take me anywhere tropical. We're trying to get out of this weather." He smiled and sent Kuro a wave as he departed the establishment. Not only would this be the first time in a long time that he'd taken on a mission with Kuro. It was also the first time he'd actively sought to take on a mission with a teammate, period. Work with his clan had been so demanding as of late that he'd only really had time for an odd job here or there. Just enough work to allow him to get by with what he made. Peace was great as it generated a lot more low rank missions. This was usually better for genin as it gave them more opportunities to train but for someone like him, he used them as an excuse to get out of the house.
Yamada picked up the ice water in front of him. It was a nice treat to have a casual conversation with someone outside of the Kuzashi compound. He loved his family but it was easy to see why so many in the village disliked them and called them arrogant. Compared to your everyday shinobi in Konoha, many of the powerful clans like the Tsubasa and the Kuzashi were considered outsiders, despite their contributions to the village. It was these two attitudes that often clashed and resulted in mixed feelings about even accomplished shinobi like Yamada. So when he had an opportunity to just chat with someone who didn't give a fuck about the village politics behind these relationships, he enjoyed it thoroughly. Even if it was with someone as gruff as Kuro. Everyone had a dark past in the shinobi world, but his was darker than most.
The water left Yamada feeling completely refreshed and for a brief moment he even forgot about the stifling heat burning around him. Using this momentum he stood up and then decided he'd go check out the bounty board. See what was up for grabs before heading back to the Kuzashi compound. Once Kuro had sobered up a bit they could make a final decision on what they'd be taking on together. If they avoided the Hokage, they might even get away with taking a low rank mission. Unfortunately if she found out the two of them were planning to collaborate she might become really vindictive and decide it was a good opportunity to drop an A or S Rank mission on them. With his luck, this would be the case.
Yamada bid the bartender farewell before stepping back out into the sun, immediately regretting his decision to leave shelter.
Better make this quick. I feel like even I'm going to burn today.
