The past few years have been a bit kinder to her, granting her enough height and structure in her physique to reach the generous height of five feet and not be mistaken as an Academy Student by the general populous. Much to her displeasure, she's still small enough to fit her childhood sobriquet of Chisana Hotaru, Little Firefly, with great accuracy. Both her short stature, pale skin and blue eyes serve as a prominent reminder of her bastard-born parentage, as she lacks the yellow firefly glow of the Hirameku eyes and their tall, tan and lanky frames. The only traits she does happen to share with the rest of the Hirameku family would be the white hair and the Lichtenberg figures littering her body and the temples of her face. Though, even those would have never come to without her service as a walking lightning rod. Her prolonged exposure to electricity had bleached her once blonde hair to a shock white shade.
When on active duty, Kirigakure’s headband usually sits loosely around her neck. A black, breatheable underarmour covers the expanse of her arms and body, covering up her neck, to her wrists and half-way down her thigh. Over it, she wears a short, hemmed komon kimono—usually of a colour scheme that suit her misty home—the collar of the top wide and loose enough to just fall off her covered shoulders and is cinched closed by a thick sash rather than a traditional obi. She often wears black gloves while her feet are clad in the black standard shinobi sandals, reaching over her knees. The would-be exposed skin of her thighs would then be covered by bandages.
Although a Tokubetsu Jounin, there are very few days she actually dons on the flak jacket but on the days she does, her outfit only consists of a black skirt and her underarmour and gloves, along with the black shinobi sandals in her usual style. Her hitai-ate would then be tied around her thigh.
On the days she spends lounging around the village, she's dressed in simpler yukata or a jinbei, forgoing her hitai-ate. However, her hair, sitting just above her shoulders, still maintain the two odd braids she'd decidedly adopted some odd years ago though she does still occasionally decorate the crown of her head with her mother's old ribbon. Meanwhile her black underarmour is replaced with a lighter, less protective layer of bandages and rather than the shinobi footwear, her feet are usually clad in a pair of zori or geta. Kids sometimes call her a mummy. She can’t really deny it.

When she was born, her hair was the same sunflower blonde as her mother's, so it wasn't a surprise when Himawari grew up to be an arguably obnoxious ball of sunshine. At a young age, she'd become very aware of the advantages of playing nice with others, quickly learning how to gift flowers to and link (covered) hands with others. Though this initially served as a proficient distraction for her--the state of war often robbed Himawari of her mother's presence--Himawari would eventually become dissatisfied with such spurious interactions and become very reticent during her years in the Academy. Thus, the majority of her time was spent studying and training (immensely inspired by her family to become a better shinobi), alienating herself from most of the year. She grew a bit thicker skinned in these years, able to brush off and ignore any venom spat by her former friends as a consequence of her isolation. Although her genin team did manage to revive genuine warmth from her upon its formation, the effects of the war eventually wore her down and cause her to withdraw into herself in order to cope with her losses.
It was only long after the events of the war and upon achieving her rank as a Chuunin did Himawari finally shed her blanket of melancholy, slowly becoming more social and unafraid of laughing openly with others. By the time she was promoted to the position of Tokubetsu Jounin, Himawari had progressed (or rather, perhaps, regressed) into the vibrant child she had been before the war had taken away her mother and before she'd become disillusioned with interpersonal relations. Admittedly, she does harbour a small resentment against the shinobi villages for the war and its atrocities but is otherwise incredibly loyal to her village, always placing her best effort in serving its civilians.
Himawari is often times very cheerful, though not in a loud and overwhelming manner (she hopes), and may come off as scatter-brained and absentminded when not in the heat of battle. This first impression often causes her clients to doubt her abilities though they are ultimately proven otherwise. In spite of being raised in environments that engraved decorum and demure into her psyche, Himawari often speaks very freely and informally, having the tendency of nicknaming acquaintances and friends. Her cheeky nature often gets the better of her many times, leading to tactless witticisms and sarcastic snarks, though they are more playful banter than offensive. Much like many girls, she's very easy to fall for cute things, fawning over animals of any type and small children. Now that she has managed to control her kekkei genkai, the Hotarubi, Himawari has begun to become more physically affectionate with others, a little less worried over the possibility of electrocuting her poor friends.
Despite her developing presence and spirited disposition, Himawari is still rather docile when it comes to conflict. There are still moments in which her childhood anxiety rears its ugly head and she finds herself disappearing before she can process it. She is adverse to behaviour she deems too confrontational and comes off as rather indecisive--a follower more than a leader. Knowing well such hesitation has no place in her life as a shinobi, Himawari tends to seal that part of her away often, dealing with the barrage of what ifs and maybes after the mission is complete. |
For the first nine years of her life, she was known as Himawari Kanesaka for the sunflowers that her mother loved and for the father that was not there.
It was almost satirical that she was born on the first summer night the fireflies came out to play. Her mother was a Jounin kunoichi involved in an affair with her colleague, the married head of the Hirameku family—controversial enough by itself, though the unexpected pregnancy of Yua Kanesaka further complicated the situation. His scorned wife would have dragged the name of his husband’s mistress through the mud if she hadn’t realised she would cause her husband’s infidelity to made known to the public and as the Hirameku were attempting to recover from their fall from grace (too small of a clan to begin with, too many lost to wars), she was discouraged by the elder members of the family from causing a spectacle. Sworn to secrecy, several Hirameku were assigned to aid the Jounin woman through her pregnancy and labour, with Hikaru Hirameku, the brother-in-law of Himawari’s father, being assigned to oversee the bastard child’s Hotarubi.
He did not treat her with the same contempt as his sister, though his tone was curt to her mother whenever they would converse. When Himawari asked Haruki of her father—because her mother only shook her head and sighed—he answered with a short sequence of unkind words. Himawari always nodded in agreement, despite not always understanding the insults. She had been taught that such vulgar language shouldn’t be tolerated but not even her own mother, with her heart so full of love, could lift Himawari up with eyes lacking fear and doubt of being hurt so it was impossible for Haruki to be less than perfect in Himawari’s eyes. Like most children born with the Hotarubi, Himawari managed to control her voltages by the age of five and although Haruki Hirameku was freed from his contract, he continued to see the girl afterwards. Under his tutelage, Himawari entered and graduated from the Academy in a timely manner, the war causing a high demand for shinobi—even the small ones would be useful enough to do the barest of grunt work. More often than not, Himawari returned from her tasks to an empty home, anxiety festering in her chest whenever she turned the key.
The war took both of them, slowly at first, as her mother was forced to return and Haruki received more and more missions with few breaks in between, before all at once. Haruki had been carried back home in critical condition and when he was finally released from the hospital, he greeted Himawari with blank eyes and a fake smile from his wheelchair. As the war reached its peak, Yua Kanesaka was constantly sent back and forth from the frontlines until the one day, she didn’t return at all.
On the day after her mother’s funeral, Haruki gathered her up in his lap and brought her to the Hirameku compound. Her first meeting with her father was awkward and stiff, while her introduction to her stepmother was, to be described politely, fairly unpleasant. It hadn’t taken long for Himawari to appreciate the empty homes and buildings of the compound—although they came to be under morbid conditions—finding solitude, and thus solace, in its vastness. (She was still scolded when she smashed a window on the day they announced the war’s end, three months after her mother’s death.)
Her remaining days as a genin were awkward and peaceful, riddled with stupid quarrels she actually loved. Their team felt more like a family than the house she returned to did so it was only understandable she mourned their deaths like family as well. (And she won’t admit it, but she’s still mourning.) Against her better judgement, Himawari retreated into herself, forming a sort of dependency for her remaining teammate, Ienori Hoshino, that was probably considered unsightly and highly disapproved of in her line of work.
It wasn’t until her father, literally and quite unceremoniously, knocked her back to reality during a spar on the day of she received her promotion to Chuunin. The change came slowly, yet steadily enough, as Himawari began to piece together an identity she never had the chance to truly form. She spent the next years pouring the majority of her energy into improving herself, as if she were making up for lost time. Her social circle was still embarassingly small, but Haruki and her father oversaw her training and she still practised her braids on Bakanori’s hair so she never felt too alone.
There are times when she feels accomplished. But then she recalls when she body flickered out of the room to hide her red face when a colleague eventually informed her that she’d even gained a bit of fame (or infamy) as the Kirigakure’s Blue Phantom for her utilisation of silent killing techniques and her blue Hotarubi. Or the moment she stepped out of the Mizukage’s office after being promoted to Tokubetsu Jounin, so incredibly excited that she nearly fried a nearby tree.
The reality that she’s not cool and will probably never be cool is apparent, but she still has a hard time accepting it.
