OH, SHOULD MY PEOPLE FALL
THEN SURELY I'LL DO THE SAME
| The brief escapade her assistant had sent her on just yesterday had done the Lady Raikage more good than she'd thought. The people enjoyed her presence, and she'd forgotten how large a source of comfort she was to them. A reminder of peace and protection. And a promise of continued prosperity to the proud shinobi and civilians alike that dwelled in the Hidden Cloud. Perhaps she'd do it more often, this, 'day off' thing. Though she'd never dare announce the idea in front of her assistant. They'd be all too pleased with themselves and she'd never hear the end of it. Looking over today's itinerary, most of it required little more of the Raikage than her signature and stamp of approval. Occasionally meetings were sprinkled in, or approving missions. All fairly standard. But at the bottom of her itinerary in bold lettering read 'Lady Kazekage, Demiyah'. Prompting Mei's amber eyes to widen ever so slightly, her head lifting from her palm that she'd been so lazily resting in. Now this was interesting."Whatever have I done to be graced with the Lady Kazekage's presence?" she asked her assistant, looking up ever so slightly from the paper. She never recalled asking to meet with this Demiyah, and she had little interest in political affairs with neighboring lands. Once you were involved, you were dragged into wars. And the last thing the people of Kumogakure needed right now was a war. They had everything they needed, but perhaps that was why other countries sought her out so eagerly. Kumogakure's economic prowess was second to no one, and their military wasn't far behind. It was a wise decision on the Lady Kazekage's part."I believe she comes seeking an alliance." the assistant answered, taking the itinerary from her Raikage and replacing it with a stack of paper work. Mei cracked her neck, easing into her chair as she prepared to tackle to the load of paperwork before here."Inform me when she arrive in town, and spare no resource greeting her. We will welcome the Lady Kazekage with open gates. Prepare light snacks and refreshments for the balcony to the north side, yes, the one that overlooks the city. We will talk there. You're dismissed." she ordered, dipping her pen gingerly into a pot of ink before diving into the paperwork. Much of her afternoon would be taken up by the Lady Kazekage, so she'd have to make up for that now. |

T he Lady Kazekage removed her hat, looking up toward the clear sky of the Land of Lightning, pausing to simply stand and enjoy the cool, sweet air. Clipping the hat onto the back of her belt like she usually did during travel, she refused to move any further, the three jounin that she had with her stopping to stare at her. One of them even went so far as asking what was wrong. The only response they got was an irritated stare which set them all to watching the perimeter for anything unusual, finding that looking anywhere other than at the Kazekage when she was in this type of mood was better than being berated by scathing words that they all knew would be following that expression. "Honestly, boys, you act as if I'm a demon in disguise. Can't a Lady enjoy the weather? We're in absolutely no rush to get to Kumogakure, so lighten up," she ordered lightly, a slight smirk forming on her features as the jounin watched her with stunned expressions. Being laid back like this wasn't exactly normal for the Kazekage. In the village she was always working and always on edge with people. The stress of it made her quick to snap and even quicker to throw someone out of her office when things grew to be too much. Out on the road one had no choice but to relax and enjoy the walk, right? "That doesn't mean stare at me like I'm some sort of three headed rabbit," she said absently, starting to move forward again, leaving them behind her. Once the shock wore off the jounin ran to catch up, two walking at her sides and one behind her for good measure. They were almost to the village. Demiyah had already spotted it in the distance a few miles back, though the three men with her didn't seem to realize that was where they were heading. They just walked at Demiyah's side and gave no notion of interest in anything. 'Idiots,' she said inwardly, her one good eye drifting toward the right to watch the man walking there. 'Are they really all feeling so low that they need to act almost inhuman? Is this the burden that the Third Kazekage left me with? Low morale and even lower shinobi?'It was disconcerting, yes, but Demiyah didn't have time to worry about it. As they reached the entrance to the village and started to pull out their papers, the Kumo shinobi standing there grew wide eyed. One of them stood up and started to stutter, "Welcome to Kumogakure, L-L-Lady K-Kazekage. The Lady Raikage is expecting you," he said a little louder than he really needed to. Lifting an eyebrow, Demiyah took her forms back from the other shinobi waiting there. "Thank you. It's a pleasure to be here. Your country is lovely," she noted as she took her first ever step into the village of Kumogakure. There seemed to be a large party of curious ninja there, looking wide eyed and excited that another Kage was in their village. Demiyah paused a few yards into the village, watching them all in silence. The three jounin with her stood quietly behind her, keeping on guard in case anything happened. She was sure that there was supposed to be someone there to meet them and take them to the Raikage. Demiyah didn't have any sense of where the Raikage's building would be in the first place. She was starting to feel a little lost, watching the curious onlookers with the same measure of curiosity from herself. 600 - @meitachibana - Sorry for the wait!

OH, SHOULD MY PEOPLE FALL
THEN SURELY I'LL DO THE SAME
| "The preparations are complete then?" she asked her assistant with a tone that warned that she had better be given the correct answer or someone was gonna get it. But her assistant reassured her warmly, kicking her off the balcony that overlooked all of Kumogakure. She'd had something akin to a tea party prepared for the Lady Kazekage. There were several different types of teas, as well as snacks. She wanted the woman to feel comfortable and welcomed so long as she was within Kumogakure's borders.
"You're late, Raikage-sama!" her assistant yelled, throwing Mei into a momentary panic. It was rare for the Lady Raikage to be anything but punctual, and she could count the number of times she'd been later for anything, even by a millisecond, on one hand. But now of all times?! When her company was none other than a visiting Kage, and impressions meant everything. "I am very aware." she heaved a sigh, quickly disappearing in a puff of white smoke as speedily made her way towards the front gates. If it weren't for the minor altercation she'd had with two of her men, she would've had the perfect amount of time to ensure the arrangements on the balcony had been made and still been early! But she wouldn't wast her breath giving the Lady Kazekage excuses.
"Everyone," her voice cut in as she dropped from one of the many mountains in Kumogakure. She landed just a few short feet from the Kazekage, but was careful not to alarm the woman. Even going to far as to position herself within the woman's line of vision. Her assistant had done well to warn her about the Kazekage's vision. It would be horrible if she was both late and managed to offend the woman all at once.
"Please, give our guest room to breath." You all know better. Her generally cordial citizens had been increasingly rude as of late. Gawking at every new guest who walked through their gates. Though perhaps that was to be expected, what with this being their second Kage visit of the month. Was she being too lax with them? Hm, that was a question to ponder at another time. "My apologies for being late, Lady Kazekage. I am Mei Tachibana, Kumogakure's Godaim Raikage. And I welcome you to our home." she said, bowing her head as was customary.
"Please, follow my lead. I'm sure you're famished from your travels. Tea and snacks have been prepared for our meeting." |

D emiyah spent a few minutes greeting the people with a polite smile and many handshakes. She was struck by how many people were so quick to welcome her. Her own people would have been a little more wary of another Kage passing into their village. Then again, with the way that Sunagakure had been used by Konohagakure for so long, a little distrust was to be expected. However, Demiyah felt completely at ease with these people, rather enjoying the few short minutes she got so spend with them. A smile formed on her features as she bent down to high five a little boy who'd run up to her feet. "Well aren't you darling?" she asked softly, chuckling lightly as the little boy blushed bashfully and ran back to his mother. The Kazekage bent back up slowly just as the Raikage jumped down from one of the mountains, reprimanding her subjects. Demiyah let out another soft chuckle, shaking her head and waving her hand just slightly. "It's no problem, Lady Raikage. They're lovely people and I've enjoyed my welcome," she noted, clear approval showing in her eyes. "I'm happy to see that the village is thriving," her words were strong, her voice carrying quite well. When her jounin team shifted behind her, she turned to look at them, lifting on eyebrow. They shot to attention, looking rather fearful of what the Kazekage might do. Demiyah shook her head, "I apologize for them. They're rather humorless, aren't they?" she chided toward her jounin, though she was speaking to Mei. Giving the same bow of her head in return, Demiyah spoke once more, having thought of her words hours beforehand, "It's good to finally meet you, Lady Raikage. My name is Demiyah Akiyama, the Yondaime Kazekage. It's a real pleasure to be in your home. Maybe next time I can greet you in mine," she noted cordially. Walking quietly next to the Raikage, Demiyah let her gaze wander around the city, smiling at it's careful intricacies. When something caught her eye, she paused, looking rather thoughtful at a business establishment off to her right. "If I may, Lady Raikage. Could I deposit my jounin here so they may rest? I assure you they will be no trouble, and we'll have a more peaceful atmosphere to speak," she said with a smile, ignoring the incredulous looks from the team behind her. One of them stepped forward, reaching out and almost touching the Kazekage's shoulder. She turned in time, however, avoiding his hand, her red gaze darkening. "You'll be good guests, will you not?" her tone held a commanding strength and the jounin instantly straightened up, bowing in reply. "Good," Demiyah said, looking back to Mei for an answer. 455 - @meitachibana - Sorry for the wait!

OH, SHOULD MY PEOPLE FALL THEN SURELY I'LL DO THE SAME ❝ It would appear as though she had spoken too soon. Upon further examination of the situation, and a testament from the Lady Kazekage herself, she could find no fault in the actions of her people. Everyone was smiling, aside from her guard, of course, but Mei knew how that went. "Say goodbye, everyone." she said softly, correcting her cold remark from earlier with something with much less bite. Perhaps what she viewed as gawking was actually a pleasant experience for her guests. Yet another thing to ponder. There was something about the Lady Kazekage's demeanor that was comforting to Mei. She was stern, keeping her subjects in line, but all the while she was enjoying herself. They were two different 'modes' to the Lady Raikage, and she found it hard to jump between them so smoothly like Demiyah was. "I know how it goes," she laughed lightly, looking at the Sand Jounin as she spoke. They stared back with the same distrusting gaze her own men had given the Hokage just days ago. Was this really what the five great shinobi nations had been reduced to? Mei would be the first to admit that she wasn't granting alliances or aid with open arms, but this was ridiculous. Remembering that the Lady Kazekage had come for more than just pleasantries, Mei took a few steps in the direction of her residence, but was just as quickly stopped by a strong voice cutting through her thoughts. "Hm?" she hummed, turning to see what building had caught the eye of her guest. Ah, Ibiki's Inn. A fine choice if you were weary and in need of a bottle of sake and a place to rest for the night. "Of course," she said, motioning with her arm towards the establishment. The men hesitated briefly, but a sharp look from their Kazekage reminded them that they had no choice in the matter. With her men safely 'deposited' at the inn, Mei continued guiding the Lady Kazekage towards the Raikage's Residence. "This way," she said, holding open the door at the entrance to her residence, and following in after the redhead Kage. Leading the way once more, she went up two flights up stairs before stopping at the third floor and walking out towards a balcony. Several snacks of both the savory and sweet persuasion had been prepared. As Mei regrettably did not know the Lady Kazekage's preference. She'd also prepared an array of tea, and taking a seat, she opted for a plain cup of earl grey. "I hope you find something is to your liking, Kazekage-sama. And whenever you are ready, I am all ears."MADE BY MINNIE OF FTS & GS

H appy to deposit her escorts in the Inn, Demiyah suddenly felt a little less tense. It was easier to hold a conversation when she didn't have to worry about what her jounin would do. Sometimes a slip of the tongue was enough to set them off, and then it would take force, save of killing them, to get them to stand down. A threat perceived was a threat through and through. That wasn't the impression that the Kazekage wanted to give. She was here under the pretense of peace and unity, not hostility and a tense tea time. Smiling gratefully at the Raikage, she said nothing more until they were in the safety of her residence. Stepping slowly down onto the balcony, she paused for a moment, her gaze on the village around them. Demiyah always did have an eye for the beauty of things, and this village was stunning. The air was sweet and welcoming. It didn't sting the way that the air in Sunagakure did. Cupping her hands in front of her stomach, she finally stepped further onto the balcony, drifting toward the tables of food. Demiyah would be lying if she said that she wasn't hungry. The journey had been long and field previsions weren't always the greatest at keeping you satisfied for long. As her eyes wandered along the variety of teas, she smiled to herself, "Please, Lady Raikage. Call me Demiyah. Until the Summit starts, I've no desire to be referred to with such formal titles." Demiyah always had been less formal. She was the type of person to view the people around her as being the same. There was no difference between her and the jounin at her side except for the skills and the title she held. They were all human beings and they were all comrades. Why hold one above the other in situations like this? Picking out a mint tea, her absolute favorite tea, she swiped an ice cube or two from a bowl, dropping them both into the cup and setting it down onto the able. She picked out food from the savory side, completely avoiding the sweets. She was happy with teriyaki chicken, roasted vegetables, and what appeared to be bread baked with cheese inside. Delighted at the food choices, she settled down across from her host. "I'd be a fool not to admit my intentions outright, Lady Raikage. I'm uneasy about this Summit, to say the very least. The intention is to speak of treaties at the end, and I'm very sure that Sunagakure's treaty with Konohagakure will be debated quite...wholeheartedly. My people call for a reformation of the treaty, as they view the only benefit of it is the trade agreements. I've had to continuously put my men out there for Konohagakure's missions over the past few years, and it's started to become less and less beneficial. I lose more men in their missions than the ones that I send them on myself. My only fear, in truth, is the Hokage refusing to hear me out and taking it as a sign of dissent and breaking off the treaty. If that happens, there's a chance of war that I wish to fully avoid as well as halted trade. Neither of these things can happen, in truth. If they do, however, I was hoping to have the backing of at least one other nation. Kirigakure is off the table simply because of their ties to Konohagakure," she started, watching the ice cubes melt into her tea before taking a small bite of the chicken that she'd taken. Chewing thoughtfully, she looked up toward the Raikage. "However," she noted when her mouth was empty, "I do not wish to pull your country into a war and put you under duress. That would be selfish of me. I'm simply asking if Sunagakure can rely on Kumogakure for support should the worst happen. We don't need to have our war fought for us. We simply need friends in a place where there may not be many." The Kazekage, paused then, giving time for her host to react. Demiyah knew that she was asking a lot, but with tensions between Sunagakure and Konohagakure starting to show, Demiyah couldn't afford to be without help if a war suddenly broke out. In addition, she knew for a fact that a treaty between Sunagakure and Kumogakure would be extremely beneficial if Kumogakure was suddenly thrown into a war. Sunagakure was always one to help their friends, as long as they weren't forced to remain lapdogs for as long as they had. 767 - @meitachibana - Sorry for the wait!

OH, SHOULD MY PEOPLE FALL THEN SURELY I'LL DO THE SAME ❝ Yuzu had done a wonderful job. Looking around the balcony, Mei could breath a sigh of relief now. She'd left to meet with the Lady Kazekage before even catching a glimpse of what the balcony might look like upon her return. But as always, she'd left things in the capable hands of Yuzu. The girl was a lifesaver, and Mei was beginning to forget how she'd ever functioned without her. And that said quite a bit when your life revolved around work as much as Mei's did. "Demiyah-sama, then." she corrected herself, though she still stubbornly refused to completely drop the honorifics. Mei was always a stickler for pleasantries. Even to those who might not deserve it, she was always respectful. The same could not be said of the Black Panther, but this was not a battle field, as the variety of snacks and teas reminded her. She poured herself a simple cup of early grey without sugar, knowing there were many other options with which to satisfy her sweet tooth. A few rolls of bebi kasutera, a skewer of savory dango, and always keeping nutrition in mind: a side of roasted vegetables. "I'd be a fool not to admit my intentions outright, Lady Raikage."
The Lady Raikage felt herself relax at these words. Unlike the young Hokage, the woman before her had come prepared, and realizing that time was of the essence, got straight to the point. It was a sentiment Mei could surely appreciate with her own busy schedule. Sipping away at her tea, she was careful to wait out Demiyah's speech before interjecting. It was unsurprising that the Lady Kazekage had come to propose an alliance just days after the Hokage had come to do the same. But there were things about it that bothered her. She was very familiar with where Konohagakure and Sunagakure stood, and it was only a matter of time before Suna took a stand. But where did this leave Kumogakure? A mind reader, eh? Mei couldn't help but laugh softly as Demiyah answered her biggest concern. "Well," she started, setting down the skewer of dango she'd been chewing on thoughtfully before continuing. "As you presumed, I have no intention of dragging Kumogakure into a war. Especially not for the sake of another country." she said flatly, "Please don't misunderstand this as me perceiving every other shinobi village as an enemy. I simply only have eyes for Kumogakure. Though I do realize that a lack of interaction is a double-edged sword." she explained, taking a sip of her tea. "However," she said, setting the glass down with a soft clang. "I will offer you the same as I did Konoha. Support. I will promise nothing more. Not to fight a war on your behalf, and not to ask you to fight a war on our behalf. But Kumogakure has grown in recent years, and I feel it is my duty to ensure that while one village prospers, that it isn't at the cost of everyone else. You have my support in ensuring Sunagakure doesn't wither away in the lap of Konohagakure. But your enemies are not my enemies." she breathed, taking a bite of her sweet bebi kasutera. Sweets were always the best after negotiations. Though this was going rather smoothly compared to her meeting with Ryoko, the Hokage. Though that might have just been due to the boy being so green. She wouldn't choose a side just yet. MADE BY MINNIE OF FTS & GS
