OH, SHOULD MY PEOPLE FALL
THEN SURELY I'LL DO THE SAME
| "I do believe I was just thrown out of my own office." the woman grumbled, lips turned downwards in a scowl as she took her first few steps outside of the large blue structure where the Raikage's quarters were held. Standing on one of the many ledges of the mountain, she looked back at the structure. Through a window she could see the stern look of her assistant, and then the quick pull of straw-like blinds as they were slammed shut. With a heavy sigh she looked out over all of Kumogakure, enjoying the view from her perch atop Kumogakure's largest mountain. It was around mid-afternoon, and the sun cast shadows over the mountainous city. It was a view she never took the time to take in, and because of that, she was always surprised by it's beauty each time she looked on from her quarters. Some things were just better appreciated when you only saw them on rare occasions! It was beside the point that she hadn't left the giant mountain, let alone the building, for over 72 hours. She was doing her job! What good did a break do her people? Absolutely nothing.
Jumping down to another mountain ledge with a huff, Mei decided she'd take this "break" as an opportunity to stroll through Kumogakure and check in on her citizens. Ensure they were all prospering, and that some awful gang of small brats hadn't formed. Her country was one of the wealthiest, and she worked hard to ensure that statistic reflected generously upon the living quarters and diet of her people. Speaking of food, when was the last time she'd eaten? "Hmm," she hummed, waving at a small child who was jumping eagerly to meet the Lady Raikage's gaze. "I suppose I should eat. A famished shinobi doesn't make for a very powerful one." she said thoughtfully, continuing her stroll through the many streets of her city. Making sure to wave 'hello' to anyone who met her gaze, and helping anyone who needed it along the way.

Mid-afternoon in the wonderful village of Kumogakure. There was nothing quite like it. Only those who resided within this great village knew what a treat it was. The sunlit skies and the gorgeous views from the mountain tops. The air always tasted so fresh and clean. It was like heaven. Or at least, as close as you could get. Aoi sat at his table, enjoying a nice afternoon lunch. The chopsticks Aoi held between the thumb and his pointer finger on his right hand, while supporting with the middle finger grasped the thick string of ramen noodles soaking in the beef broth. The broth poured down from the noodles as Aoi lifted them from the hot bowl. Giving the noodles one last shake to ensure that the broth wouldn't get all over the place, Aoi moved in for a glorious bite. Moving the noodles towards his lips, Aoi stuffed the string of noodles inside of his mouth, slurping them up. The noodles slid in, splashing him slightly with the broth they were still soaked in as the tips disappeared into his mouth, forever gone. Aoi chewed the noodles for a moment, to ensure they went down easy. With that, a swallow, and the chewed up noodles raced down his throat, and into his stomach.
Aoi twisted his head to his left. There, not even a foot from him, sat his beloved Gekido, the massive sword he so treasured. The tip of the blade buried and hidden away in the ground below. The sword standing taller than Aoi for the moment while he sat and enjoyed his beef ramen. Steam rose up from the hot bowl of ramen as Aoi contemplated taking another bite.
It was a day off for Aoi. It wasn't very often that Aoi had managed to get time to himself. Not that he enjoyed time off. Aoi often liked to keep busy. Taking on the next mission. It was all he could think about right now. What could be his next mission? This was something Aoi often wondered.
Suddenly, Aoi began to feel a dull pain in his right eye. Dropping the chopsticks and leaving them to support themselves up against the edge of the bowl, Aoi raised his right hand up to his face, covering the mysterious marking that had been cursed upon him. Taking a deep breath, Aoi tried to calm himself, careful not to let the curse mark get hold of him.
This stupid thing...

OH, SHOULD MY PEOPLE FALL
THEN SURELY I'LL DO THE SAME
| "Thank you, Lady Raikage!" a couple of civilians called out from behind Mei. They'd gotten in a rather large shipment of fruit today, and the boxes were filled to the brim. So full they couldn't even be closed. Instead, rope had loosely been tied over the top in an attempt to secure them down as the young couple made their way up the steep incline of the mountain. Mei's ever watchful eye had caught the box slowly teetering over their shoulders, and was quick to come to their aid. Disappearing in a puff of white smoke at the bottom of the mountain only to reappear next to them, just in time to steady the box and help them carry it the rest of the way.
Though she'd fed her desire to help her citizens, her stomach continued to protest. It seemed as though she'd neglected food long enough. But what would the great Lady Raikage have today? She required something with perfect portions. And by no means was she high maintenance. She was simply looking to meet her nutritional needs so that she would be in top shape at all times. That ruled out many of a shinobi's favorite foods such as ramen or takoyaki.
As if on cue, the smell of salt flooded her nostrils as she passed by a ramen stand. From just under the curtains she could see a small piece of a large sword, one she'd only ever seen one man wield. Perhaps ramen wouldn't be such an awful lunch if it meant company. Rather, company that wasn't her assistant nagging at her to" "get out and see the sun!"
"Aoi-san," she said softly, the lightest flicker of cheer in her tone that was nowhere to be seen in her expression as she lifted the curtain to the ramen shop. Her eyes locked onto the familiar patch of light blue just in time to watch the chopsticks fall abruptly from his fingers. His hand reaching up to clench his eye. The flat line her lips had formed immediately curved downwards, and she ignored the greeting from the shopkeeper as she quickly moved to Aoi's side. "How bad is it?" she inquired, tilting her head down to meet his gaze. All too aware of how deadly his curse mark could make him.
"Just say the word and I'll have us out of here in an instant." |

Thoughts began to race through Aoi's head. Visions of the past. Images of his comrades perishing one by one right in front of his very own eyes. The only friends he ever had, the only people he cared about. He could only think back to that tragic day. The smell of blood filling the air. Pools oozing from their dead bodies. His own father, giving up his own life in order to protect him. They day this cursed mark appeared. This was the very day Aoi lost his humanity.
The grip grew tighter over his eye. His nails digging into the skin. The more he thought about the past and the day this mark appeared, the angrier he got. As his anger deepened, the greater the pain. Too many times Aoi fell slave to this mark, letting it control him. The thoughts began to race out of control, until a familiar voice resonated into his ears. He recognized it immediately. Aoi reached for Gekido's hilt with his left hand, clutching it tightly. Somehow, Gekido brought peace to his mind. Combined with the soothing voice of the Raikage, Aoi finally began to calm down. He knew that if he lost control, the lady Raikage could put a stop to him. This gave Aoi comfort.
Moments passed, and the pain finally began to subside. Aoi removed his right hand from his eye, and loosened the grip on Gekido. Though loosened, he still held onto his companion. Aoi raised his head once again, making eye contact with lady Raikage.
"I'm fine now..." he responded, hesitantly. "The pain has gone."

OH, SHOULD MY PEOPLE FALL

| The Lady Raikage stood next to him, tense with one hand gripping the hilt of Seikatsu firmly while her other hand lay gently on Aoi's shoulder. Her eyes narrowed, focused on every twitch, every breath, and every blink that came from the Jounin in front of her. If the slightest thing felt off, she'd take him down without batting an eyelash. It wasn't her pleasure to take down Kumo-nin, but if need be, she would. Still her fingers traced only the hilt of the blade she'd dubbed 'life'. For she truly hoped she wouldn't have to kill him. Though dual wielding was her specialty, and both blades were always drawn in a fight, Mei only ever delivered the killing blow with one: Shi. Seikatsu was reserved for protecting those she cared about. They each played important roles for someone of her stature.
Several moments passed by in what felt like hours moving in slow motion. But slowly she watched as Aoi breathed a pained sigh, his arm pulling away from his face to reveal small marks where his nails had dug in. Leaving light red crescent moons lining just above his brow bone. Mei released her grip from her sword, her white hand slowly flushing pink as the blood returned to it. The shopkeeper looked on, completely unaware of the silent struggle that had just taken place, and then nearly jumped when Mei jerked upright, her amber eyes staring him down.
"Y-y-yes, Lady R-Raikage?!" he stuttered, fumbling with the dish he'd been cleaning for the past few minutes. With a sigh she broke the impromptu staring contest, plopping down on the wooden seat next to Aoi. "One bowl of ramen with extra vegetables and egg, please." she ordered, trying to get the most nutritional value out of her meal. The two sat in silence as she awaited her food, and Mei took this opportunity to observe the many decorations in the ramen stand. It was often she came to a place like this.
The clink of her ramen bowl pulled her away from the many distractions on the walls of the stand, and her stomach growled softly, eagerly awaiting the food it had been deprived of for so long. "Did you recently return from a mission?" she inquired between bites of ramen. Letting the salty noodles linger on her tongue and enjoying the flavors far more than she should have. Dinner would have to be a strict one.

Lady Raikage put in her order. As Mei awaited the arrival of her food, Aoi continued to eat his, now that he had finally calmed down. He began to slurp up another string of salty noodles, the beef flavor exploding in his mouth. The ramen had cooled down a bit. Enough to eat it quickly, rather than waiting for each bite to cool down first.
Breaking the silence, the Raikage spoke first. Aoi listened intently as the Raikage asked about his recent mission. It was true. Aoi had recently returned from a mission. A downright dirty mission that only grew dirtier the deeper Aoi fell into it. But to Aoi, a job was a job. A target was a target, and nothing more. Whether it meant he needed to kill a full fledged shinobi, or a group of child genin. It didn't matter to him who the target was. He would do what he was paid to do.
"I did..." Aoi responded to the Raikage's question. "I had to act as a body guard for a client. Turns out he had a group of genin and a jounin tailing him. Gekido and I killed them all. Their bodies are still in the forest. The mission was a success... but it brought back too many memories."
Aoi took another deep breath in, trying not to let the anger get to him again.

| "Turns out he had a group of genin and a jounin tailing him." How unfortunate. Mei frowned as she listened to Aoi recant his mission. They were always such awful stories, and it was a wonder why she ever even let him leave the village. The path he walked was only ever tragic and bloody. Just like that awful cursed mark on his eye. But the Lady Raikage knew there was nothing she could do, short of being a dictator, to prevent him from taking on such missions. "Gekido and I killed them all." The Raikage was carefully not to visibly flinch at this, but internally, she had. Not because of death itself, no, that was normal for a shinobi. Even more so when you were talking about the Black Panther. But because such promising life had been cut down so early. If it were here own Genin, it would no doubt have pained her to hear of their untimely demise.
Perhaps it was these shared demons that allowed the two to reach a sort of understanding with one another. Mei was hardly trusting enough to be sure as to whether or not she could call the Jounin next to her a 'friend', but she cared about him. "Aoi," she said softly, hand reaching into the holster on her right hip. "I want you to have this." she said, revealing a larger than average kunai. Wrapped around the handle was parchment with a seal, her 'mark'.
Pulling one of his hands away from his half empty bowl of ramen, she placed the unique kunai flat in his palm. When your Kage offered you something, there was no refusing it. "Keep this on you at all times. I've marked it, meaning I can use Hiraishin no Jutsu to teleport to you in an instant." she explained, releasing his hand and settling back into her seat.
"I know it's not much. But should you ever lose control and I know, I'll stop you. I promise."

The story Aoi had told must have bothered the Raikage slightly. Not enough to warrant a visible reaction, like Aoi expected, but he knew that such a story couldn't just be ignored. Especially by the Raikage. She had to have felt something, and Aoi was aware. Alas, killing was part of a shinobi's line of work. Nothing could change that. If Aoi had to kill a few Genin to get the job done, then so be it. That only meant that his will was stronger. That they were unprepared and too weak for the life of a shinobi.
To Aoi's surprise, Lady Raikage took his hand into hers, pulling it away from his bowl of ramen. Before Aoi could say anything, she had placed a unique kunai into the palm of his hand. Aoi gazed at the kunai, wrapped in a special charm. So this is one of Lady Raikage's famous kunai...
Mei had explained to Aoi what this kunai was, and the purpose for it. She had also explained to Aoi why she was giving him the kunai in the first place, and Aoi listened to his master intently, making sure to make eye contact the entire time. As she finished her explanation, Aoi began to rise up to his feet, still silent. Aoi slipped the kunai into his pouch, where it would undoubtedly be safe.
"Thank you, Lady Raikage." Aoi stated with little emotion in his voice. "You've always looked after me. I don't want to be a burden to you or the village. I'll do my best to keep myself under control, but if I need you, I know you'll be there."
Aoi spun around, facing the curtains hanging, blocking the outside from seeing in. As he walked by Gekido, he grasped the hilt with his right hand, removing Gekido from the Earth below. Lifting Gekido over his shoulder, he slid his companion away into the straps across his back that held Gekido in place. As he walked through the curtains and away from the ramen shop, he reflected on what had just occured. Aoi hadn't opened up like that to anybody since his father as a child. His face burned slightly with embarrassment, and like a flash, Aoi vanished into thin air.
