my heart is cold, you can't leave She was not as mature as she'd have others believe. In fact, she could be considerably immature and petty, though the Raikage's assistant would deny this with utmost fervor. She had the pleasure of seeing her genin team - excuse her, ex-genin team (normally, she'd have to stay on board but her assistant duties got her out of it) - whilst assigning them a mission. And she was more than glad to see that the aviary needed cleaning. So she gave them the scroll, a perfectly innocent and cheerful expression on her face, and enjoyed their looks of terror and exasperation.
Such had been the wonderful morning of Yuzu Kagome. Maybe she was as sour as her name implied. Since then, her morning had gone rather uniformly, but she had nothing to complain about. The prank she had pulled this morning was enough to tide her over for the next few weeks! And by then, she would have certainly assigned her team something better - maybe cleaning the windows of the Raikage tower or cleaning the lakes surrounding Kumo? Hey, the ecosystem was important. Important enough, at the very least, to convince the Raikage to approve it as an actual mission and- she took a break from her thoughts to sigh in happiness. This would be delightful.
So yes, Yuzu was a secret fiend. The conclusion of her evil thoughts was announced by the ticking of a clock reminding the girl that it was time to go to lunch. Placing a stack of papers neatly on the edge of the Raikage's desk, she excused herself before heading outside. She had packed herself a bento box out of her family's sparse refrigerator - they really needed to go grocery shopping, perhaps she would pick something up before going home tonight - and now the only problem was where to eat it. She didn't want to be completely isolated from everyone, nor did she wish to intrude on a group of people unless she knew them already. And so she wandered, looking for a good place to sit down and heat her meal. @tagged MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS

529 | Eating alone usually garnered two kinds of thoughts: this was done on purpose and I am happy to be alone or why won’t anyone eat with me? Two different kinds of notions and neither sounded exactly appetizing to Hitomi. She would have been happy to have company, especially if it was her teammates or sensei, but she didn’t exactly mind eating by herself either. To be truthful, the teenaged Hane wasn’t alone. No, with beautiful weather and just enough breeze to make the skies easy to fly, Hitomi wasn’t alone at all.
Looking up to the tree that loomed over the bench she sat at, Hitomi watched as a pair of sparrows twittered in the branches. They were native birds, colored brown and black to match the country’s rocky coastline. And from the looks of it they were enjoying themselves immensely, swooping under twigs, chasing each other as they occasionally paused to survey their surrounding before the game picked back up again.
Hitomi smiled as she listened to their chatter, not bothering to translate what they were actually saying. While her clan could talk to avian creatures, just like many other animal related clans could communicate to their companions, Hitomi didn’t try to decipher the birds unless she absolutely needed to. It was rude to eavesdrop.
Smile fading away, Hitomi returned back to the meal in front of her: a small bento box with a cup of bird seed next to it. Whether the bird seed was for Hitomi or for the pair of sparrows above her that was yet to be determined, but the girl always brought the handful of seed with her whenever she ate outside. Normally, Hitomi had no need to eat it unless she was upset (a nervous habit of most Hane) but sometimes she just liked the taste. She knew it was weird, even by her clan’s standards.
Glancing up from her meal, Hitomi paused to scan the outside seating area just as the sparrows did a few moments ago. She didn’t like to let her guard down and this way Hitomi made a practice out of it, testing her sensing skills as she ate. Closing her eyes, Hitomi concentrated on building her chakra, spreading it out as she counted how many other foreign chakras she could feel.
As the count rose, Hitomi widened her range, knowing that this kind of technique was what her clan was made for. She had extended the range to cover most of the courtyard when she found a chakra that she knew in passing. Cutting off her ability, Hitomi quickly opened her eyes, looking over at person in question.
“Hi Yuzu,” she smiled politely, not knowing if the Raikage’s assistant could hear her from this distance. But it was always nice to try. And Hitomi respected Yuzu greatly, both impressed and envious of the other girl’s position. Yet, if anyone was to fill that spot then the organized Kagome was it.
((Hi there! I hope you don’t mind me sliding into this open thread and I also hope you’re okay that Hitomi knows Yuzu- seeing how they’re around the same age and all and Hitomi would get her missions from Yuzu… ))

my heart is cold, you can't leave Sunlight ebbed in through the leaves overhead, catching Yuzu's eye. She had wandered away from the center of the village in to one of the rare forested areas that the Land of Lightning possessed. She had been on missions to Hi no Kuni and Taki no Kuni, so she knew what it was like in areas that had many more trees. But, in her opinion, the rarity of the foliage made them much more special.
She was jarred from her thoughts by a voice faintly calling her name so indistinctly that she almost was tempted to brush it off as nothing. In the village, she often wouldn't respond to her name unless there was a suffix attached, as often people were speaking of the fruit and not her - it became confusing. But on the outskirts of the Hidden Village when there were no fruit vendors in sight, the words seemed to lend no room for misunderstanding. Her head jolted downward quickly as she latched her sights on Hitomi, someone she knew from missions and experience in general. A genuine smile brightened her features as she walked over to the girl who was sitting on a bench.
"Hi Hitomi," she greeted in return. "What are you doing on your own out here? Other than eating, of course." she added, with a touch of awkwardness. "Would you mind if I sat with you?" she asked as an afterthought. She had been looking for somewhere to eat and she wouldn't mind Hitomi's company in the slightest.
A pair of birds chirped in a tree overhead as a breeze rustled past. She could hear the leaves rustling like cloth in wind and the clouds that loomed nearby - Kumogakure was highly elevated - were visibly dragged along by the gust. The wind was warm and comforting - she had been enjoying the weather in Kumo lately. It had been warmer than usual and quite lovely. Hitomi HaneHihi! thanks for taking this and of course it's fine! Sorry this is late, I've been really busy. MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS

350 | In the brief moments that Yuzu seemed not to recognize what Hitomi had said, several thoughts flickered in the girl’s head. Had Hitomi been too soft spoken? Had Yuzu wanted to be alone today, not bothered by some young genin who came to her for missions? Had a polite wave at the Raikage’s assistant been more apt than her casual hello? Yet, all of these fears and worries drifted away as Yuzu smiled back at Hitomi.
Placing her utensils onto a napkin on the table, Hitomi returned the gesture, an earnest smile flickering back at Yuzu. It wasn’t often that the two girls shared time together, each belonging to a different team (or rather, Yuzu had till her promotion) and each working in different fields and families, but that didn’t mean Hitomi couldn’t enjoy Yuzu’s company. And if Yuzu was worth admiring (and being the object of some jealousy- the good natured kind, of course) then the Kagome was worth spending time with outside of receiving missions. “Just enjoying the day,” Hitomi replied back, before gesturing to a free spot on the bench across from her. “Please, by all means, it would be nice to have someone to eat with!” The Hane’s eyes flickered over to the lone tree, vaguely thinking to herself, well, besides the birds.
Hitomi patiently waited for Yuzu to sit before she returned to her own meal. She was excited to have a chance to talk with Yuzu about anything other than missions, maybe even learn something about Yuzu’s personal life (in a non-nosy kind of way). Truly, Hitomi just wanted to hear that Yuzu was doing well and that life was going happily- those were the simply joys that every shinobi should learn to embrace. Because outside of the battles and missions came life and while you could never scrub away the shinobi parts about yourself, it wasn’t all of you.
Or at least that’s what Hitomi thought.
She was a shinobi but she was also Hitomi, a member of the Hane clan, and she was also a person.
“Have things been going well for you lately? Not too busy I hope.”
((Take your time! I have family visiting so I wont be able to post quickly either~))

my heart is cold, you can't leave Yuzu grinned at the invitation, immediately plopping herself down on the bench next to Hitomi. She started in surprise as her chopsticks precariously teetered on the edge of falling on to the dirty ground but in a quick maneuver of uncharacteristic agility, she managed to snatch them before picking the box up from her lap to sit on the much more horizontal table. She sent an embarrassed and bashful twinge of a smile in Hitomi's direction, almost blushing. Yuzu couldn't help but glance at Hitomi's neatly placed lunch and chopsticks with a twinge of envy. Yuzu was hardly reckless or uncouth, but Hitomi had an enviable grace and orderliness about her that Yuzu oftentimes lacked.
"Thanks, Hitomi!" she said with her usual amount of cheer. She sighed in contentment, a pleased smile spreading across her lips. "I didn't realize I had wandered all the way out here," she commented aimlessly. "It's nice - there aren't many trees in the main part of Kumogakure. Do you come here often?" It would be fitting, she thought, for a kunoichi from a bird clan to enjoy the trees more than the cloud-shrouded buildings of Kumo. Yuzu blinked, paused in thought for a second. "Hmm, how do you even get here, Hitomi?" she asked. "I wasn't paying attention on my way up and- ahh yeah." If Hitomi frequented this area often, it would be nice to know how to find her. Well, she could always close her eyes and wander around, hoping for the best, but that didn't seem like such a stellar plan.
Another wind rustled past and the smell of early summer trickled up her nose as she opened her lunch box. She placed the lid on the table as she deeply inhaled the sent of fresh leaves and damp soil. Mmm. She had missed that smell. It reminded her of beams of warm sunshine and fresh wildflowers poking out through the dirt to say hello to the sky. The breeze rustled through her hair, requiring her to push her ruffling short locks back behind her ears. Even the breeze wasn't enough to force a shiver out of her anymore, instead refreshing in the still summer air. It was a rather windy day, she noticed passively, not bothered by it at all. From the corner of her eye she caught sight of a single leaf dancing amorously with the wind before it trailed away in a soft, whistling gust that her ears could barely perceive.
She turned her attention back to Hitomi as the girl addressed her. A mischievous smile played at the edges of her lips as Yuzu's eyes glinted playfully. She let out a small giggle before responding. "No, not busy at all. In fact-" she lowered her tone to a whisper. "I had time to give my old team a special assignment." she winked at Hitomi. "They're going to have a lot of fun cleaning out the aviary this afternoon. But shh- please don't tell anyone that I'm evil, Hitomi-chan," she pleaded, throwing in the honorific for good measure. "I think I'm going to have them clean out the lakes next- I mean, for the ecosystem, of course. And how have you been?" she asked in return, sending Hitomi a perfectly innocent look.

515 | "Nice catch," Hitomi exclaimed, waving her hand at Yuzu's somewhat embarrassed smile, excusing the other girl’s reaction. If that had been Hitomi's chopsticks and response then the girl had no doubt in the world that they would've been sullied by the dirt. Hitomi had sharp reflexes, most Shinobi did, but Yuzu's fingers seemed to snag the chopsticks before they were even in danger of reaching the ground. Or at least that's what it appeared to be to Hitomi, a teenager whose eyes were often tinted by an envious lens. Noticing that Yuzu was now ready to eat, Hitomi quietly returned to her own lunch, picking up small pieces of her food as she listened to the chuunin. The Hane girl nodded at the appropriate times, using the covering of her veil to watch Yuzu intensely without being noticed. Hitomi tended to be contradictory with her gaze, either falling away and never meeting or watching with an unabashed severity. Thankfully her face covering hid her orbs away from everyone, allowing Hitomi to do what she pleased without being noticed.
“The trees are very nice here, the smaller birds like it compared to the Valley of Clouds or the upper levels of the village,” Hitomi explained as if Yuzu was really interested in the well-being and personal preferences of a bird.
She reached for another slice of her food just as Yuzu asked her next question. Pausing for a moment, Hitomi blushed bashfully as she quickly finished her next bite before talking, refusing to speak while her mouth was full. The genin swallowed and then smiled, pointing over to a far path that appeared almost hidden between two buildings. “If you follow that road it takes you back to the main areas of the village. It’s a longer walks, lots of weaving between houses, but it’s pleasant and normally quiet.”
Hitomi’s mask blew in the wind as she spoke and, without even giving much thought about it, she quickly smoothed it down. She felt comfortable talking to Yuzu and certainly happy the Kage’s assistant had asked to eat together. All of Hitomi’s close friends, Shikai, Kenta, and her brother, Kiyoshi, they were all guys. Sometimes it was nice to have another girl around for a change. It made Hitomi feel more…feminine.
When Yuzu clarified her last mission assignment she dished out, Hitomi shook her head, gently chuckling. She felt bad that Yuzu’s old team seemed to get those kinds of assignments, but Hitomi also knew Yuzu’s delight in giving out such tasks and, personally, cleaning out the aviary sounded fun to the Hane girl. Dirty perhaps, but lots of company and birds.
“That doesn’t sound too bad to me, Yuzu-chan,” Hitomi giggled, returning back to her food. “But your devious plans are safe with me, I promise. And I’m doing well, thank you, training with my team for the next Chuunin exams...”
Her words seemed to trail off at the end and quietly, every so quietly, Hitomi added. “How were the exams when you took them?” The girl’s apprehension was obvious to anyone who could read people.
((Ah, no, now I'm so sorry! I forgot all about this thread, my bad >_< ))
