738 have a novel! and i think we're on page three- yayayay! I'M SEARCHING FOR A PARADISE Taijutsu would never be a Hane’s friend and if anyone dared to say otherwise Hitomi would laugh all the way to her grave. The style had never been her thing (for obvious reasons) and whenever it came up in the Academy the girl bulked, trying to get out of it before being pushed to the front of the group or shoved in anyways. Even the excuse that the Hane bones, running weaker since they combined themselves with birds and that included having more hollow like bones, didn’t save Hitomi from that dreaded technique. Face your weakness.
Well, she had. She just faced her weakness and now she was sprawled out on her back because of it, blinking as she refocused her senses. “Ooofff,” the girl breathed as she felt a weight press down on her, straddling her against the ground. Hitomi hadn’t expected Shikai to straddle her, that’s for sure; she’d just thought he’d reach down and pluck her mask and then jump away to make sure she didn’t grab his hat in retaliation. It could’ve been a tie.
She heard a woop of joy and suddenly everything around her went bright. Her mask never hampered Hitomi’s view, it was a special material that she was quite proud of for this reason, but even the finest fabric still blocked out the sun partially. Instantly Hitomi closed her eyes. It looked like she was adverting her gaze from the new lighting, shading herself from the glare that hit her. But, in truth, Hitomi felt naked without her covering and it was strange not to have it. No one but her father sees her without it now.
Even as Shikai crooned over his victory, Hitomi kept her eyes jammed shut and away from her teammate. “Congratulations,” she replied quietly, letting most of her body relax into the ground as her muscles twitched from such an intense match. It may have been easy for Shikai, being so physical, but Hitomi had used most of her chakra reserves in this fight and she had pushed her lithe body far, and she was feeling the immediate after affects. She was already planning to talk to her sensei and father about extra training, this match shouldn’t have been this hard. Fear about the upcoming chuunin exams flooded Hitomi’s throat.
And then the pressure on her stomach and hips faded and slowly, very slowly, Hitomi opened her eyes, naked to the world. Nothing close to normal human eyes, Hitomi resembled a bird’s eyes with bright yellow sclera and a perfectly round pupil. She blinked up at Shikai, not meeting his gaze, embarrassed. “I-I can stand,” Hitomi replied, reaching out for his hand as she pushed herself off the ground, purposely trying not to rely on Shikai too much. The last thing the female shinobi wanted was Shikai thinking she was weak.
Her side and the back of her head flared in pain, a small protest from earlier injuries as Hitomi straightened herself out, smoothing the front of her brown robe. As her teammate gave her compliments the shyness she felt earlier seemed to melt away, inch by inch. Shikai had that about him, that inner youth, that warmth. He could make any one at ease. “Thank you, Shikai-kun,” Hitomi managed, her voice regaining strength, confidence. “I’ll remember that when we’re out in the field so I don’t hurt you as well as our enemy.”
Now that Shikai explained how much the technique affected him, Hitomi felt guilty. She didn’t know that Shikai’s hearing was so vulnerable to loud noises but now that she did she would have to keep that in mind whenever they worked together. “I’m not sure if I can teach you the full technique, to be honest,” the Hane admitted, reaching to her side to retie the strap on her robe. “It’s a hiden jutsu and unqiue to my clan,” she finally looked up at him, giving him full view of her bird eyes. “And you kind of need to bond with a bird first before you can do it.” A nervous laugh followed her explanation, hoping that Shikai knew about how secretive most clan’s kept their hiden jutsu.
“But I can teach you a trick I know where you build chakra in your ears to help muffle the sound and pain,” Hitomi offered.
She smiled back at him.
“And maybe you could help me with Taijutsu? You’re great at that!”

‘Cause I’m on top of the world, ‘ay I’m on top of the world, ‘ay Waiting on this for a while now Paying my dues to the dirt I’ve been waiting to smile, ‘ay Been holding it in for a while, ‘ay Take you with me if I can Been dreaming of this since a child I’m on top of the world. On Top Of The World Eager as he initially was to gaze into a Hane's eyes, Shikai was not entirely mentally ready for such a spectacle, thus as Hitomi opened her eyes sheepishly, he flinched slightly at the odd sight. Wow, their eyes really were different from regular people's, it was true! Of course it was true, but this was the first time the boy got lucky enough to see something like that. Eyes widened, the blond kid tried his hardest not to tactlessly express his awe at the female's small physical quirk. That, in itself, somewhat prevented his successful interpretation of everything his dear teammate had said. Though, as luck would have it, that technique she used - Tsuranukyou - turned into their primary subject in the conversation after the battle. While Hitomi took her time speaking, Shikai tried awkwardly stretching his body after this training session, still focused on the girl's eyes.
"Heeeh..." His amazement... Probably wasn't directed at her technique's details however.
When she finally looked up at him again, Shikai ended up flinching slightly once again. It was probably an expected reaction from someone who had never really laid eyes on the Hane Clan's special eyes before, but the boy could only hope his teammate understood such circumstances. Also, it should be clear after exchanging blows with him - as going fist against fist is the best way to go fully honest, at least in his belief - that Shikai Saotome is not one to mock others depending on how they look like, and if he would, it's all in good friendliness and only telling if the other can entirely ignore such a stingy comment. He had to be cautious.
After her explanation ended, Shikai took a short moment to think to himself, eyes still glued well in on the Hane's. So it was a Hiden technique, huh? One that they probably won't teach to anybody outside their clan. If that's the case, it's all the more fun for him. He had the pleasure of figuring out by himself how to do that! He smiled at the idea, slightly chuckling to himself. "...Nihihi!" Shikai had talent in techniques, that much he was entirely confident. Not that anybody would really know, but creativeness and dedication can make for beautiful techniques, and if he can be observant enough, the boy was certain he could discover the secret behind Tsuranukyou and utilize it in battle, not necessarily as the same technique displayed. He, after all, invented a Fuuton technique completely by himself! Also... "Well, that's not a problem, Hitomin!!" It should be expected that a boy like him would give out a line like that.
Finally finishing his stretches, the boy leaned somewhat to the side with both hands interlocked behind his head, smiling widely. His hat was placed on his head once again. "Bonding with a bird really ain't that hard! I mean, Hitomin's sort of like a bird, and I think we're getting along perfectly!! Don't you? Hehe!" He commented. All in all, if it counted, then he had all the right properties. He had the Chakra to use and the creativity to come up with a roundabout way. He had the freedom of a bird and a direct friendship, bond with a member of the Hane Clan, if not with their birds in due time. All that was left was to study it closely. That Tsurankyou Justu, that is. Though, Shikai's specialty leaned on the Taijutsu side, he liked enhancing it with Ninjutsu to increase effectiveness, as provided in this battle.
"I guess I could give you some tips on Taijutsu, but... I don't really know if you'd wanna jump the trigger right away, hehehe... My training was pretty tough, you know!" It was true. If anybody heard of what Shikai really went through physically in his time training under his grandfather, they wouldn't believe he's still alive. The boy's a nut. A very difficultly cracked nut. "But sure, I think we can work something out! It's a deal then!!" Piercing Cry for general Taijutsu prowess. Sounds like a plan.

FRAGILE BIRD When she sleeps there is a fever dream, yeah. It brings a night terror to harm this fragile bird. She speaks in tongues, her words they come undone, yeah. And with a wayward mind she struggles through the night. | I f you’ve ever watched a bird interacting with a mirror this is exactly how Hitomi looked as her teammate studied her eyes. When he flinched, she did, when he leaned forward so did, subconsciously, Hitomi. She couldn’t help it. Not many saw the genetic markings of a pure bred Hane in person if they weren’t a Hane (now she was sounding more like a prized animal than a human). This was especially true when it came to Hitomi’s eyes as she wasn’t one to show them off. So having someone interact with her, with them, it made her both skittish and proud. It was hard for her to tell if Shikai was amazed or put off by them. But he was still talking…that counted for something, right? She smiled weakly as Shikai laughed at…well, laughed at something but Hitomi wasn’t entirely sure what. The paranoia that came in the form of a teenaged girl made her think he was laughing at her appearance or her Clan’s jutsu but that wasn’t Shikai like at all! Not at least in the way she knew him. So he must have been chuckling at something else, Hitomi shrugged slightly to herself, rolling her shoulders to stretch them. Whatever it was she would have to trust that it wasn’t at her expense. They were teammates after all. “Okay, sorry about that,” Hitomi nodded, watching as Shikai stretched. She felt bad she couldn’t teach him the technique he wanted to learn but Clan rules were Clan rules. And if someone outside of a Clan learned a Hiden jutsu then it wasn’t Hiden anymore, was it? It was just a common jutsu. The other part of the girl was glad for those rules, because as much as she didn’t want to say no to Shikai she also didn’t want to spoil what made her Clan special.
Pulling her gaze away from Shikai’s intense stare, Hitomi landed on the hat perched on the boy’s head. It was a reminder that she hadn’t won this match, but she didn’t let that get her down. She could only improve right? It was a new kind of attitude that seemed to leak off of her partner and onto her, making Hitomi ever grateful for Shikai being on her team. Perhaps she would even benefit his studies one day. It would be a nice way for them to balance each other out as friends.
Shikai’s words made her laugh. “Yes, well, I am a bit of a bird,” she agreed, a small smile appearing over her face. “And, and, we’re friends, yes.” Hitomi nodded, digging the tip of her sandal into the dirt. “Though I’m not sure it works like that…” The girl laughed, looking back at Shikai’s gaze. “But I guess you’re going to try anyways, right?”“And for the Taijutsu, I want to improve! There’s a lot of it I physically can’t do,” the gennin admitted, “But maybe some basic blocks and attacks? I think I could handle that. And, as I said, in return I’ll help you protect yourself from Tsuranukyou. But that will mean me having to use it more…maybe we should get you some ear plugs first?”“I don’t want to hurt you too much,” Hitomi teased, playfully pushing her teammate’s shoulder. |

On Top Of The World It's a shame, really. Shikai really was intent on learning to use that technique, positive it would widen his arsenal of Jutsu if he took some reference as example or something similar. He was advancing well with his Wind Release, so general Ninjutsu should work well as well. If only he gets the chance to use it. And if Hitomi was not going to show him exactly how it's really done on a regular basis, without the bonding-with-bird part, then he'll just have to figure it out. Not too much of a tough thing to do, huh. Maybe, perhaps there is some kind of hint to how it's done through learning how to block a technique like that. In fact, learning how to avoid damage as much as possible from Tsuranukyou would probably help with generally heavy-sound techniques of the sort. He's bound to meet those.
"See? It goes well!" He commented in remark to her pointing out the facts he assumed. Though, her explanation about wanting to learn Taijutsu and staying on the subject of only teaching him protection method meant she was only going to help him so far with his request. That's alright too, not like the boy can't really go with that. Compensation and learning to cope with what's available is also important on that matter. Though he wasn't too satisfied, he'll go with that.
He grinned after the girl finished her turn and pushed his shoulder lightly. Not a good sign. "Heh." He waited a short moment before suddenly grabbing at the girl's neck with his arm around it, bringing her to his waist level and picking on her head slightly. A Hane was not nearly as powerful physically as he; even if they had a Taijutsu specialist, they were likely on even physical strength, he wanted to guess. So that much shouldn't be a problem. Just a small sign of friendship. An odd sign. "Getting a little ahead of ourselves, aren't we Hitomin!! So you wanna train with me on Taijutsu, is that it!? Well, ain't that great!! Hahaha!!!" He let her go after that small abuse display. All in all, he was in a good mood, even if he took it as provoking.
Resuming his position of both hands behind his head, Shikai smiled at her again. "Maybe earplugs would help a bit, but... You shouldn't underestimate your teammates. I promise I won't if you take your Taijutsu seriously. I'm sure we can work on some basic blocks or predicting moves. The more you engage in it, the better you get at reading sequences! And with your build, you'd utilize mostly avoidance rather actual offense, am I right?" He took a wild guess depending on this fight: Hitomi attempted to stay away from Shikai's close-range style as much as possible, evident from the techniques she used. If she wasn't raised into Taijutsu or physical front, she probably felt uncomfortable with it considering they were only on the start. Best to work on what you're best suited with for a starter.

FRAGILE BIRD When she sleeps there is a fever dream, yeah. It brings a night terror to harm this fragile bird. She speaks in tongues, her words they come undone, yeah. And with a wayward mind she struggles through the night. | E ek!” Hitomi chirped, finding herself firmly twisted into a headlock position. She hadn’t expected Shikai to really react to her playful punch besides a laugh or maybe even a hit back. But this? This noogie of doom? The girl squirmed against her teammate’s iron hold, beating her hands against him in a fruitless attempt to free herself. Hitomi had a good feeling she wouldn’t be freed from Shikai’s grasp unless he wanted her to be. Sighing, she slumped lifelessly as her friend continued his playful actions before finally finally letting her go. “I’m just trying to be positive!”Huffing in defense, the girl went back to smoothing her once again ruffled robes. “And I promise to take the Taijutsu training seriously, Shikai-kun, because I wouldn’t give you any less than my best!” She looked him firmly in the eyes, a surge of boldness taking the small kunoichi as she stood in the middle of Kumo’s training grounds. “Just like you wouldn’t give me anything else either, right?” She smiled at her teammate, holding her hand out for the head covering the other teenager still held. If they were going to train later or if they were finished today then Hitomi wanted that back before they moved from this spot. She was also prepared to transform into her bird form and peck Shikai annoyingly till he relented.“That’s right. I’m not a close range fighter at all, not like you Shikai,” the girl admitted, wriggling her fingers as she held out her hand. “That’s why we make such a great team! Now…can I have my mask back, please? We’ve got work to do!”END |
