Much like the land to the west, the Land of Rivers was a lush, green country with forests and, to no one’s surprise, a whole lot of rivers. Huge hills, canyons and other rock formations also reminded travelers of the dry country to the east. While peace was always fragile, this area was the closest anyone could get to a neutral ground. There weren’t any inherently important locations here, nothing for the rulers to bicker over. Thus it happened to be a fairly popular route for all sorts of merchants, messengers, criminals and wanderers. People had their reasons to be here...
Like vacation for example.
Along a popular trade road, on the rocky bank of a river that followed it, a dark figure was curled up to a large rock. It was a woman with a messy, blonde flock of hair, a black jumpsuit and a fishing rod suspended between her knees. Hara Kin, the infamous Kitsune of Konoha, had snuck here under the guise of training trip. Sure, she wouldn’t have needed to lie. As a Jounin, she could go wherever she pleased, but she couldn’t let others know where she had been. Her life was her secret, even when it came to such silly things like days off.
After what had felt like a small eternity, Hara finally got lucky. The end of the fishing rod tipped once, twice, until on the third it almost flew off her hands. The drowsy trickster was snapped back to the world of the awake just in time to grab it. Something trashed wildly beneath the surface. It looked like the thing was having a seizure. The Kitsune grinned and started pulling back. However, this fishy was stubborn... And powerful. Raw strength had never been the trickster’s forte and despite her best efforts, she was skidding towards the water little by little. But she wouldn’t give up! Because where was the fun in that?
Suddenly, the struggling creature yanked with all its might. Hara was caught off-guard and her feet slipped, sending her straight into the river. But she still refused to let go. Without wasting a beat, she reflexively flipped around and started walking... well... sliding on the river surface, as expected from any Jounin. Staying upright was easy enough, but water had even worse traction than stone. Combined with the powerful being surging forward underwater, it offered quite a sight to any travelers walking down the road. A grown woman with a fishing rod was getting pulled along the river like a water-skier. And she was having way too much fun with it.
"Wheeeeeee~!"

The Kazekage didn't get out much. In fact with the tensions between nations, she hadn't left the village in quite a while. Needless to say she was all too tired of people hovering over her shoulder and watching her every move, terrified for her safety. Then again, she wouldn't have become Kazekage if she couldn't defend herself properly. She wasn't a genin. With that self-revelation she'd left the jounin hanchou in charge and decided to take a few days of her own vacation, wishing to get away so she could practice in peace. The days journey out of the sand village and into the Land of Rivers had been refreshing. There was no one there to bother her, either.
Demiyah sighed, drinking the last of her water from her canteen, before staring into the empty container with a look of disdain. Why had she waited so long to fill the thing back up? She was still quite thirsty, in need of finding a water source. She paused, closing her eyes and listening for any sounds of running water. Once she picked out the particular sound she was searching for, she followed it lazily, her hand holding her cloak closed as she moved forward. It wasn't long before she happened onto the bank of the river, leaning down to dip her canteen into the water, letting it fill.
She wasn't expecting to see something fly past her blind spot and across the water at such a speed. She shot up to stand straight, the canteen dropped at her feet and the water spilling out onto the bank. Her right hand moved back, gripping the base of her bow, watching the scene unfold. Looking across the water and to the other side of the bank, she looked to where the young woman had been before suddenly careening across the water, a hard grip on her fishing pole. Demiyah held in the bubble of laughter and fought off the bemused expression that threatened to take hold on her features. This was quite something, and as much as the Kazekage didn't want to admit it, rather amusing at the same time.
It took a moment, but Demiyah finally let go of her bow, bending down to pick up her canteen and refill it, her eyes still on the woman skidding on the water. She didn't know if the girl needed help or if she was alright wrestling the fish by herself. Clearing her throat, she called out across the water, "Hey! Do you need some help there?!"

Now this was living. It wasn’t every day one could get a watery joyride. While skidding along the glimmering river, Hara spotted someone along the way. The crimson hair stood out from afar. A lady with a traveller’s outfit and a bow to go with it was taking a drink refill. As the Kitsune zoomed past, she couldn’t help but feel the woman seemed... familiar... Like someone important she should’ve known... For the moment, they just stared at each other. Ah, but she was way too distracted to focus on remembering. The thought was pushed aside when the stranger offered help. Well, wasn’t that nice?
Flashing a wide smile, the gleeful trickster hollered back. "Hiya~! Thanks, but I’ve got this~!" It almost seemed like the fish could understand her, because just then it swerved wildly from side to side, nearly throwing the trickster off balance. Maybe it was a protest, or maybe just a funny coincidence. Either way, Hara just laughed and steadied herself. "Woah, hey! Nice try, but no fish was match for the Kitsune!" That said, though, she still needed to figure out how to actually stop and catch the fish. At this rate, it would take ages to tire out. While sliding along, she couldn’t help but wonder one other little thing too...
Just what was that distant rumbling sound?
Hara gazed down the river until she noticed a spot where water just seemed to vanish. Now, where would water go in a river if not down? And of course the fishy catch was heading straight for it. "Oh my, playing hard to catch, are we?" From way back here, it didn’t look like the biggest waterfall around, but Hara wasn’t very keen on taking a dive. The water was chilly. Oh, and the drop might hurt, what with the sharp rocks probably waiting at the bottom. It would’ve been her typical luck. She glanced to check and, yes, the nice traveler was still there. "...On a second thought, I could maybe kinda use a hand here!" Despite the ever-cheerful smile, her tone changed pretty quickly.
If the underwater escapee wasn’t stopped soon, someone was in for a cold swim. Luckily, two people versus one stubborn fish should’ve tipped the scales nicely. ...Or so Hara secretly hoped. She really didn’t want to get any wetter. And no, just letting go of the rod wasn’t an option here.

Demiyah stared rather blankly at the woman when she refused her help. She couldn't really do anything about it if the woman didn't want it. It wasn't like Demiyah to help someone against their will. Instead, the Kazekage capped her canteen, clipping it back to her belt without a second thought before crossing her arms over her chest and watching. She could hear the distant roar of the waterfall and she knew that this mystery woman would need help eventually. At the rate the fish was pulling her across the water it would be far sooner than later. So she waited. Patiently as always.
Then her signal came. The woman did need help after all. A smirk tugged at the Kazekage's lips as she braced herself, following the form of the woman. She drew in a very slow breath, taking one step forward and then another. In quite literally an instant, she had her arm around the woman's torso, taking in a sharp breath and pulling them both to the other side of the river in the same split second span of time. She moved fast enough to catch the woman's fish off guard and pulled it out of the water as she went, letting Hara settle her feet on solid ground before motioning with a smile down toward the flopping fish on the river bank.
"You might want to catch him before he get's away. It'd be a waste to almost die for a fish and then not get to eat it, right?" she said with a placid expression on her features. She needed to sit down. She was already exhausted from her journey, but using her speed to carry both another human body and a massive fish out of water was starting to wear at her. Her kekkei genkai was useful, but she was nowhere close to mastering it quite yet. Demiyah had been using it for only a few years. It took most people ten or so years to completely master their own kekkei genkai. She might be the Kazekage, but she wasn't exactly a prodigy when it came to ninjutsu or her own skills. No, no. Only on the intelligence front did things come easy. Everything else she'd worked hard for, harder than she'd ever expected to in her lifetime.
Sighing, she slowly sunk onto the ground, sitting in a position in which she could easily grab her bow or flee in the event of an attacking ninja. "May I ask what you're doing riding your fishing pole down a newly-realized dangerous river?" she asked, a hint of boredom in her tone. A defensive strategy to make sure that no one go too close. Nevertheless, she was curious.

Much to Hara’s quiet relief, the stranger dashed to rescue, though she didn’t realize it until after the fact. By the time the touch registered, she was already safe and the huge fish had been yanked out with her. This familiar woman was incredible, even faster than Boss... Letting out the relieved sigh she had been holding, the Kitsune offered her most thankful smile with a tone to go with it. "Hee, I’m sure it’ll be fine. I hear fishies aren’t so quick on land. Thanks a bunch, Speedy." Tossing the fishing rod aside, the smiling trickster stretched and tiptoed around a bit. It felt so nice to have solid, dry ground beneath her toes once again.
When the red-head voiced the curious question, the Kitsune glanced at her with a playful smirk. "You may, though you already did." And that was that. The smartass trickster wasn’t going to give a straight answer, unless the stranger asked again and more precisely. Hara loved playing words against people after all. Humming a cheery tune, she skipped to the fish that was all tangled up in the line. Up close, the catch looked even bigger, easily the size of a human. Yummy! She would be eating herself silly tonight. However, when she pulled out her kunai, he fish suddenly stopped flopping and... yelled?
"Leave me alone already!"
In a puff of smoke, the massive fish turned into a man dressed in what looked a little like a dark diving suit. Most of his face was hidden beneath some sort of breathing mask, while his impressive muscles were lean and mean. The scarred forehead protector marked him as a ninja. ...Just not a very good one, judging by how much he had to struggle just to break free from the tangled line. Hara slowly tilted her head at the sight. Once the sheer absurdity sank in, she doubled over in a hysterical laughing fit. The frustrated mystery ninja just turned to wade back into the water while muttering something nasty about 'damn tourists' and 'ruined training'.
After managing to stifle the last giggles, Hara wiped the tears of laughter and glanced at her new buddy. "Oh wow... Hey, is it just me, or was that guy really fishy?" With the joking question, she was of course referring to the little detail that the guy’s forehead protector had a big scar going right through it. He couldn’t have been anyone horribly infamous since she couldn’t even remember the face from the Bingo Book, had to be just another small fry rogue running around. They could’ve still easily caught him, but the trickster didn’t feel like actually doing anything about it. Not her country, not her problem.

Demiyah sighed, growing rather irritated by the woman's constant need to joke with her. Then not giving her a straight answer? Yeah, that frustrated her even more, though she wouldn't show it. She kept her feelings neatly tucked away from prying eyes, never letting anyone too close to really see what was going through her head. The Kazekage was struck dumb for a moment when the woman called her 'Speedy'. It was a distasteful nickname and she would put a stop to the use of it as quickly as she could. No one was going to call her that ever again if she could help it.
"First of all-" Demiyah started, pausing with a furrowed brow as she looked down at the fish turned ninja. Tensing at the sight of the rogue ninja, she started to grab her bow before thinking better of it, letting the man go. If she wanted to, she could send a team to scout out these parts. Not that she'd waste her time on a shinobi as weak as him. He wasn't going to be worth her time, though she knew she could make nice with one of the other villages if she brought the missing ninja to them. When the man had gone, Demiyah stared patiently at Hara, crossing her arms over her chest while she waited for the giggles to stop.
This woman really was something, and maybe Demiyah could have learned from her. She was always told that she needed to loosen up, but she really didn't have time for other peoples wishful thinking. Cheerfulness didn't get things done in the village, did it? "It was a missing ninja. But by the way he was unable to lose you on that pole, he's not worth the time or energy it would take to return him to his village. Besides... what was he doing biting down on a fish hook anyway?" she commented, looking slightly disturbed at the thought. People in this world were weird. It bothered her sometimes.
"And by the way, don't call me Speedy. My name is Demiyah," she said shortly, narrowing her eyes at the woman in front of her. "What's your name? Your real name. The one you were born with. Don't give me a nickname," she noted, being far more clear with her statements than before. There was no way for the woman to get out of answering her questions properly now. If she found a way, Demiyah would likely just walk away from her.

Hara only grinned at the stranger’s reactions. It looked like she didn’t want to waste time with the guy either. "Heh, maybe my bait is just that good." She just had to chime another joke at the question that didn’t actually need an answer. Upon catching the name, she stopped to ponder out loud. "Demiyah, Demiyah... Hmm..." And then it hit her. The puzzle pieces fell into their rightful places. "Ah, I remember you now~ You are the Kazekage, aren’t you?" Of course, the reveal wasn’t going to really change anything. Hara was informal through and through. Secretly, though, she wondered what such a big shot was doing in the middle of nowhere. She sensed a secret~
When Demiyah got assertive and precise with her questioning, Hara faked a fearful shock. "Oh my, so direct and forceful. You are making me quiver." However, instead of just lying to the woman, the trickster got a far more amusing idea. Oh, the Kazekage would get her answers alright... If she played her cards right. "But! Nothing in this world is free, you know. If you want truths, you’ll have to earn them." As far as she was concerned, this was a win-win setup. If the woman walked away, the Kitsune could’ve kept her precious secrets, but if Demiyah actually played, Hara would get to match wits with a Kage.
But first, some persuasion...
Turning away, Hara gazed at the clouds and let out a dejected sigh. "Ah, but I guess the great Kazekage is too busy and important to play games with poor, little me~" She paused for a moment to gauge for reactions. If this woman was anything like Boss, then the trickster knew exactly what button to press next... The most devious of smiles played on her lips and she opened her eyes just enough to reveal glimpse of golden color. For a brief mutter, her childish tone made way for quiet arrogance. "You probably couldn’t beat me anyway..." Oh yes, it was a direct challenge. People could rarely resist those.
The playful Kitsune hid her golden eyes again and shrugged. "It’s not even a difficult game really." If all had gone according to plan, she should’ve had the woman’s undivided attention by now. "A riddle for a question... An answer for an answer..." Leaning close with complete disregard for personal space, the trickster voiced the key question. "Well, how about it? Will you play with me?" She was sounding less like a grown shinobi and more like a little kid with every word. "I kinda like you, so I’ll start with an easy one." Well, at least she wasn’t lying, about either thing. Even if the Kazekage left, Hara was still going to recite what was one of her favorite riddles.
"If you have me, you’ll want to share me. If you share me, I am no more. What am I? "

Demiyah detested riddles. The only reason that she played along most of the time was because of her sister. The twin had been unable to continue her life as a shinobi after the chuunin exams. A wound to her internal organs had made it detrimental to her health, so she spent her days reading, writing, and accompanying Demiyah whenever the Kazekage found that she had time to herself. Her sister loved riddles and was always trying to outwit her little sister. There were times in which Demiyah would purposely lose and feign ignorance just to give her big sister some satisfaction. However, Emiko wasn't an idiot and most likely knew that Demiyah often threw their games. She never said anything about it, though.
That being said, Demiyah wasn't really in the mood for riddles. This woman just acted so much like her own sister that it was scary and she felt a slight pain to her heart as she thought about it. Sighing heavily, Demiyah rolled her shoulders back, looking thoughtful. She had no interest in the questions, and it was clear as she gazed around the area, trying to pick out the path that she'd been walking on across the river from where they were. "A secret," she noted, a hint of mild boredom in her voice as she stood on her tiptoes.
"I'm not worried about losing in a game of wits. If I was, I wouldn't be the Kazekage," she noted offhandedly, letting her gaze return to the woman in front of her, the disinterest still in her gaze. "What's your next question, then, Kitsune?" she said lightly, crossing her arms over her chest, looking rather relaxed. That was never the case with her, however. She was a great actor in most aspects. She was always on edge, and right now, standing out in the open like this was making her nervous. She started to walk down the bank of the river, giving a silent motion for the Konoha ninja to follow along if she would like. With a woman like Hara it'd be impossible for her to refuse the invitation. Demiyah knew that the girl wouldn't leave until she was finished with her games, and even then it might be a while. They might as well makes themselves useful at the same time.
Demiyah let her hands hide within her cloak, her arms crossed easily across her chest still as she focused on the world in front of her and around her, very aware of the ninja that was now behind her. Demiyah knew she had nothing to fear from the girl at this moment. Even if it came to it, she was sure that Hara wasn't stupid enough to attack a Kage on foreign soil like this.

Much to Hara’s glee, the Kazekage decided to play along after all. And she wasn’t dumb either. Now things were getting interesting. Naturally, she followed right behind the woman, eager to play some more. Her mind was just bubbling with ideas what to do next. After the question about further questions, the blonde kunoichi just commented idly. "Hara Kin." The flat mention of the name was followed by a brief pause before she bothered to elaborate. "My name is Hara Kin." The Kazekage had answered the riddle correctly, so she had earned the truth, even if she didn’t realize the rarity of it.
However, shortly after introducing herself, the trickster snickered and continued in a light-hearted tone. "But feel free to keep calling me Kitsune. I like nicknames. They really bring people together." Sneaking right up to the woman, she leaned close enough to breathe a mischievous whisper in her ear. "Right, Speedy? " Of course she would call the Kazekage that. She used the amusing nickname only because the red-haired woman had explicitly revealed she didn’t like it. Poking for reactions was fun! And unlike Hara’s Boss, the Hokage, this grouchy woman didn’t command her respect. Titles and reputation meant very little to the Kitsune. Only actions really mattered.
Before Hara could tease her new buddy more, a long, drawn out squeak interrupted her. It ended in a low, awkward grumble. The Kitsune took some distance and folded her arms over her stomach, feigning ignorance. "Oh, hey, did you hear that too? I wonder where it could’ve come from..." Of course she wouldn’t admit it, but she was absolutely starving, had been for a whole day now. Due to her lousy luck with fishing, she would’ve had to come up with something else and soon. However, leaving the Kazekage just wasn’t an option. Getting a chance to play with a big shot was so rare.
For a brief moment, the Kitsune pondered what it would’ve been like to just sit down and have a meal with the Kage. She broke into quiet snickers at the mere idea. Hah, now that would’ve been a sight... Smirking, she returned to the topic. "Well then, I guess I’ll toss something harder your way this time... And if you answer correctly, in return I’ll answer anything on your mind." It would be another one of her personal favorites, though still not the hardest in her arsenal. She would test the Kage’s wit little by little...
"We hurt without moving. We poison without touching. We bear the truth and the lies. We are not to be judged by our size. What are we?"

The Kazekage closed her eyes as she walked, keeping careful timing of her steps and remaining aware of her surroundings. Any dip in the ground or uneven stretch of dirt was navigated carefully. Demiyah resigned to remaining silent for a long while, her hand moving to grab her canteen and opening the top of it for a long sip before placing it back on her belt. Her arms then rested comfortably under her cloak, simply listening to the Kitsune blather on. When the Kitsune placed herself at Demiyah's ear, Demiyah almost reached back and pushed her into a nearby tree. She kept her hands to herself, however, not letting her need for personal space let her seem rude or cruel even though her personality did well enough on it's own to give both of those impressions. Hara paused for a moment, asking if she'd heard a noise, and Demiyah turned to look at her, her only good eye actually seeing her. She'd heard the noise, but she was sure it was just the woman's own stomach growling. It was an odd question to ask, especially if you could feel the noise in your stomach anyway.
"It sounded like your stomach," she started offhandedly, crossing her arms over her chest now. Demiyah watched the woman with an intense expression. "Do they not pay you enough for your missions in Konoha?" she asked, not exactly being rude and not exactly taking a jab at the current ally to her own village. 'Or do we simply take all of the missions from you because of our treaty?' she wondered silently, living a careful eyebrow at Hara. "There should be a village close by here, if I'm navigating myself in the right direction. There's a great barbeque place there," Demiyah said lightly, giving a not so obvious invitation to the Kitsune to join her for a meal. With that she turned away once again and started walking, her gaze remaining on the path in front of her now. She'd walked this path a few times. There was a cabin around here that she'd rented and then bought later on as a place for her to escape from the village when she needed it. Her father and sister used it as a vacation house when they wanted to relocate to a less harsh environment for a time.
The next riddle was just as easy as the last, and Demiyah let out an audible sigh. "Words, Kitsune. The answer is words," she said calmly, turning her head to the right to glance back at the woman with a visible smirk. She wasn't going to lose to the woman that easily. Despite her disdain for riddles, Demiyah's strong suit was logic. It was hard to best her mind and the only one who'd ever come close thus far was her cousin Tetsu. The kid was sharp and Demiyah respected him for it. It wasn't going to be easy to catch her off guard in games of logic like this, but Demiyah was clearly enjoying not having to throw their little game like she would have done already with her sister.
