Kagami methodically placed bowls in to a sink as she ran hot water from the tap. She gazed out the window while she scrubbed at the dishes, the glare of lanterns in the small kitchen reflecting against window that divided her from the night sky. She could make out an unusually clear sky between the reflections, stars sparkling on a pitch-black void. But there were more pressing matters at hand. Her family had finally come clean about the rebellion they were planning. Perhaps "come clean" wasn't the proper phrase. She had always had an inkling of what the Side Branch was planning, a feeling of unrest that was impossible to ignore or pass off as nothing. That didn't mean she could understand it, however. They were the clan of Amaterasu, the goddess who brought light and to many clan members, there was no light in the current Konoha. It was their job to bring it back. But it would be so destructive and that was darkness. Yes, they were the clan of fire - fire that cleansed and brought new beginnings. But on the other hand, fire could not burn fire. They would not be able to cleanse Konoha of anything. There would always be a Hokage. There would always be betrayal and hurt and anger. As much as she wanted to have a definitive answer of right and wrong, all she knew is where she stood. And she wanted to support her loved ones no matter what. The people she loved the most weren't always her family, but when it came to push and shove, she really didn't know which side she would stand for. The bowl she had been scrubbing fell from her palms into the sink, though it remained unchipped. She dried her hands and placed the bowl on a rack to dry. Letting out a quiet sigh, she pressed her hands, warm from the water, over her face. Maybe the Main Branch, more faithful than she, were truly the only ones capable of tending to the shrine. They were truly quite pure - she was having doubts over the safety of her own village, a traitor already. She quickly exited the house, thankful for the cover of the night that made her hair less prevalent. Self-consciously running a hand through the pink locks, she knew that no matter how the clan members might stare or scoff, she wouldn't change it back for a long time. Crickets chimed in to the rhythm of her footsteps as she walked along the sidewalk, the thick, humid air like a blanket around her. She could smell barbecue from a distance and, feeling that she had walked too far, plopped herself down in a thick blanket of grass in the shade of a tree. She was near to the shrine, so she felt comfortable enough to close her eyes and relax for a second. She was protected here. | ||
